Hey just thought I would share a recent 'fix' we play in our local circle. For old codexs we find the cost is out of touch with new costs... and so we have started to add a 12-15% bonus for older codexs. The games have been much better and closer, which is way better as the amount of time that is invested into a game can really suck if its just a blowout for one player. We have done this with Dark Angels and Chaos space marines so far and have found it to still be even. Whatcha think. I also have made a video battle report of one of the games which is on you tube, just type in my user name to find my you tube channel
Its not a perfect system but seems to work. Like not sure how that would work with Orcs.

So Imperial Guard and Space Wolves get a 15% point increase because they're old Codices by now?

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

^ This.

What constitutes an 'old' codex? Certainly not CSM as they are the newest codex now. And, more to the point, how is ADDING pts costs helping these codecies? Especially DA where they are generally already 10 - 15% more expensive than their vanilla counterparts?

Not sure what you were going for here, but I'm not sure you achieved the desired effect.

I think he means codexes that are out of touch with the way the game is now, like Eldar.

Armies that are left on the sidelines because they aren't competitive.

this does NOT constitute IG, SW or BA, or anything with a flyer or skyfire unit (except maybe orks), armies that have a hard time dealing with newer codexes.

I think this may cover these codexes, personally
Eldar
Orks
Tau
Tyranids
Chaos Daemons, esepcially with GK.
Black Templars
SoB (maybe?)
DA (for the time being)

Armies that are probably effective enough to void this clause:
CSM
C:SM
BA
SW
IG
GK
DE

NB: I listed Chaos demons because I don't know them. I am aware that last year a player got rather far with Chaos Demons in the american circuit.

I think these are reasonable settings for price adjustments.

Either a 15% bigger army or something like a 3% price decrease (rounding up) probably works well.

The simple truth is that in order for each codex to be externally balanced (ie, balanced against other codexes), we would have to go through each book and adjust the cost of each unit. For example, from the Tau Codex some models are quite over-priced (the devilfish is about a third overcosted), whereas others are fairly priced even 2 editions in. Broadside Battlesuits are the standout example to me. Broadside teams are currently among, if not the, best anti-tank unit in the game, having amazing range and multiple, accurate S10 AP1 shots. Giving a tau player an extra 15% to play around with is probably fine if he's buying Fire Warriors and Kroot. Should that Tau player use those points to purchase Broadsides, they are probably getting the better side of that deal.

Also, you missed Necrons from the "good" list, unless Necrons have suddenly started to suck while I wasn't looking.

Except Tau and Nids got BETTER in a lot of ways with 6th edition, not worse. The problem with the rest is that they still have those one or two builds that make them really, really good. Shootaboys or Deathwing are as nasty now as ever. So, basically, take one of thsoe, apply this rule, and now you're really, really good *1.15.

I don't like it.

I can't endorse this; for starters the Allies rules went a step towards making older armies viable by permitting them to use units from newer Codexes; secondly the older books aren't inherently less powerful, it's more a problem of the fact that builds that were successful in 4e/5e don't work very well with them, meaning you'll have to learn to play the army all over again. Try and get the players of older Codexes to rework their lists before declaring the books inherently flawed and making such an inherently exploitable rule.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.
