So, long time marine collector here. I don't really wanna buy or paint any more marines, at least not for the forseeable future. I'd really like to have a counterpoint to "the good guys."
So, I'm thinking an evil army of some type would be cool. The ones I'd be most interested in, and know the least about are dark eldar and demons. I don't want to be a bandwagon jumper or paint more marines, so chaos marines are out. Don't like the way orks or tyrannids look, so wouldn't want to collect them either.
Now, what are demons good at? Melee army? Dark elves are shooters? I really have little experience with them, but it would be cool I think to play something less common.
I think a nurgle army would be sweet, and some of the melee/monstrous looking dark eldar also strike my fancy.
Just looking for some general ideas and thoughts on a really cool, really sinister evil army!
Thanks!

Personally I like Dark Eldar more than Chaos Daemons but it depends on what you are looking for. Dark Eldar are a more "cackling" evil, doing gross things and modifying people's bodies. They are evil in a dark sense, like an evil doctor or something. The Chaos Daemons are more along the lines of "the gates of hell have unleashed!". They aren't so much evil in the sense of doing something wrong and thus making it evil....they are just evil incarnate. They do have very different playing styles but both are easily playable in 6th.

Do you want go nearly always go first, shoot and melee well, be fast, sneaky yet not that tough? Go dark eldar.
Do you want to deep strike your whole army, run stuff that's fearless, eternal warrior, mostly melee, and able to run various mono or non mono god stuff? Go demons.
I personally suggest going dark eldar.

Dark Eldar have the potential to be sickeningly shooty with Kabalites, Trueborn, Scourges and vehicles. They also have the ability to be very assaulty with Wyches, Bloodbrides and Hellions.
While they took some hits in the transfer to 6th, they're still a nice army, with a lot of options depending on the level of competitiveness of your area.

I wouldn't completely rule out CSM, although you are fed up with marines, right now I believe you can make a Chaos Marine army without no more than one actual chaos space marine (Cultists as troops, and filling out the Heavy Support/Fast Attack slots with the new Daemon Engines, Obliterators, and the like, you might even be able to get down to zero if you are able to take a Daemon Prince as an HQ. Don't take this as certain, since I don't have the codex, but it is something to consider), and if the released thus far are any indication, they seem to be moving away from having chaos marines just be marines with pointy bits and more towards them being something truly different.
As for daemons, they have a little bit of everything, but their biggest strength and their greatest weakness is that they always deep strike. Tzeentch daemons can shoot, and the rest are strictly melee, although you have a lot of good options (although Khrone Daemons other than the Bloodthirster are considered to be the 'worst' god). If you do go with Daemons, make sure you find the WD dwarf rules update. The new flamers are utterly insane, and you might want the option to take a chariot of Slaneesh.
Dark Eldar used to be extremely diverse, but the rules changes hit too of their big features hard. Witches, while not irrelevant as some claim, are much weaker than Warriors now, as the changes to cover and the addition of overwatch makes them extremely vulnerable (they are one of the few units that are soft enough for overwatch to be a significant factor against them). Additionally, the inability to charge out of reserves hurt the webway portal strategy, which is a shame and even as a non DE player I would love to see them FAQ the WWP so that you can charge after arriving from it. That being said DE are among the most mobile armies in the game, and they are also fairly good at shooting even now.
The only evil army I haven't seen you mention is Necrons. Have you thought about them, or do you consider them 'not evil enough' or 'too space marine-y'.

Thanks these are good things to consider. I do find many of the DE models appealing, especially some of the more monstrous looking creatures and aliens. I've heard though that 6th ed hurt them (although, couldn't anyone make that claim for their army?).
Demons seem awesome from well, the horror factor, especially a nurgle themed army.
However, I really like the idea of a traitor cultist army, with few to no marines at all. It would be different and challenging I'm sure, plus those new cultist models are boss.
And yeah, necrons are cool and all, I'm just not interested in collecting them. I'll probably just go for whatever has the models I like the best, and gameplay style second. So I'm gonna have to take a close look at what each has to offer.

I'd go Dark Eldar.
I run a Coven list (Wracks, Grotesques, Scourges, Pain Engines and Haemonculi) . If it looks hinky and wrong, it's Coven
It's my wife's fault She bought me a Talos, because it looked awesomely wrong and cthullian...

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts
