I don't get why people are going so crazy over this thing. Everywhere I look people talk about how good it is including some people at my FLGS. It's a standard CC dread that does exceptionally well against tanks and is a bit more resilient. My biggest complaint is that the extra attacks are useless against squads. Can someone please enlighten me?

The extra attacks are useless against squads?
It's either 1 or 2 Str8 Ap1 attacks, that's hardly useless.

At the end of the day, it's relatively cheap, tough, 3HP smasher that looks pretty cool.

I prefer the Forgefiend myself - 8 Str8 Ap4 shots of smushy goodness.

I don't know. It still hits at I1 when charging through cover according to the FAQ.

So.. lulz.

I1 through cover. And the extra attacks are on models you hit... not units. The dude is going to be dead already I
i.e. waisted extra attack.

I really want to like the Maulerfiend, and I want to like the magma cutters (Because I want to convert a crazy khornate maulerfiend with ork dread buzzsaws for magma cutters.) However, it just doesn't seem that effective. Krak grenades just kill AV12 walkers so fast. Inv save and 'it won't die' might help there a bit though.

The huge problem with the magma cutters is that they must hit a target the fiend already hit*. In most cases that target is already dead, so this weapon end up doing nothing. Sure, it will help you shred vehicles, but that is a bit too situational for my liking, especially as destroying vehicles is not really an issue in this edition. Then there are the robo tentacles, but those won't drop the attacks lower that one, so it won't help against the grenades any. They only do something against terminators and fist-wielding characters. So yeah, this thing has two secondary weapon systems that will do absolutely nothing most of the time.

* How will the wound allocation work here anyway? I'm hitting a squad, not individual models.

This is my issue with it as well. You are exactly correct.

As far as the extra attacks, I think for simplicity if I had any attacks that did t wound against a single wound unit I would take that many and roll those as new hits

It also moves 12" and has fleet so it will get into cc very quickly. It also gets a 5++ and the possibility to regenerate HP. It's designed to take out vehicles by default with the lasher tendrils it's an MC/walker hunter. It's also fairly cheap.

Against normal infantry it's a tarpit. It will hurt small squads of anything without invunerable saves. Anything short of a powerfist is unlikely to hurt it so it will win combat more likely than not.

Fearless horde tarpits will give it trouble epecially ones that can actually hurt it. But with a 12" move and fleet it will likely be able to pick and choose its battles.

As for the magma cutters, they arent useless against infantry but not nearly as useful. If it hits a model an fails to wound it (it is a 1/6 chance against anything without an invunerable save) the magma cutters will trigger. They also trigger against characters that successfully LoS! The magma cutters only require a model that was successfully rolled to hit against to still be around at I1.

The biggest issue I have with the maulerfiend is that it takes up a HS slot which is a very competitive part of the CSM FOC. Havocs are pretty good right now and Forgefiends throw out a lot of dakka. Chaos predators are very cheap and have access to the vehicle armory list. A triple lascannon pred is 140. 115 if you keep the autocannon.

If it was FA or Elite it would be easier to take but the shooty options in HS are better. The warpsmith might be worth taking if it switched demon engines to elites.

How are krak grenades any good against av12 walkers? They still have to roll to hit and only glance on a roll of 6. All krak grenades are S6 not S8 like krak missiles. A squad of 10 marines with krak is only going to average .75 glances against an AV 12 walker with a 5++.

Tarrasq, you're right. Krak grenades won't kill it very fast. Still, them and meltabombs are the most common threats in CC to walkers, and the tentacles won't help against them.

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

Ok I was way to tired/out of food to read correctly, and I did indeed read the landraiders point entry.

Whoops

So anyway- 135p for an assault walker that reduces models attacks in BtB by 2, or 125 for an assault walker that get's 1-2 bonus automatic melta hits when its already hit with its fists. I think the big downside is WS3, meaning MEQ's are hitting it on 3+ in combat
