The only terrain that will be on the board when the ADL is "deployed" is terrain that is inherent to the board. There is no rule limiting distance between terrain and Fortifications.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

In a narrative based terrain setup this is not always true. Also tournaments with pre placed terrain, this may not be the case. But you are right the book only covers fortifications being placed prior to terrain. IMO, this is simply a matter of reversing the rule in tournaments placing terrain first, no terrain can be placed within 3" of fortifications, therefore fortifications may not be placed within 3" of terrain.

Except that ADL's are considered terrain, I believe.
In fact, all fortifications are terrain. That is why they have a "terrain type".

Well there is no terrain down when the ADL is placed, so it would be really tough to get within 3 inches of a piece of terrain.
Terrain, however, needs to stay 3 inches away from the ADL when being placed. (P.120).

thank you very much for the decisive answer there my store doesn't follow this rule often and I will make sure everyone is following it from now on.

More accurately, the terrain needs to stay away from the ADL.
Fortifications are placed before other terrain.

No, I did not. I responded to the last post on page 1 without noticing that there was a page 2.

Typically the reverse is also true. In tournaments you will find many of the boards are preset, in which case you are deploying the ADL after terrain. Check with your TO about how they want to rule on that.

Pretty sure the book clearly says that you can place it:
1. Wholly within the owning players table half
and
2. Not within 3" of another *fortification*
It also counts toward the terrain density rule, which may be what everyone is referring to, but in any case, the ADL is placed before any other terrain anyway.

Yes and yes, but again all fortifications have a "terrain type" which denotes they are terrain.

"players must place any fortifications they have in their armies before placing any other terrain." P.120
The part that says "before placing any other terrain" means the Fortifications are in fact terrain.

the reason this was so paramount to understand is I played with a jerk who abused this rule using a 5-6 inch tall inclining hill to proper his entire aegis defense line ontop of giving him abut a 7-9 inch tall terrain wall of 2+ cover saves on demand for his tau which could because of terrain abuse allow him to hope past the wall then behind the 9 inches over and over and over never allowing for LOS until... round 4 i think when i crashed into his lines. Knowing the enemy will have to keep it away from terrain helps immensely especially since I have a page number to boot.
I know how it sounds the tau player might have been fine but the ADL was used in such a way that i could see 200o pts of tau... i don't think I need to highlight how stupid that is to the rest of you

Being terrain, it would also count against the D3 pieces allowed per table section.
That's why the fort is rad. It's like 4 or 5 pieces. You can use it to open up an area and create a cover free kill zone.

It's obviously ambiguous, in need of an FAQ, and up to the TO until GW clears it up.
Or do we need this thing to go on for 10 pages, have two camps make up their minds on how it is and still not get anywhere until the thread is locked?

RAW it seems vague, but RAI it seems pretty clear.
Is there any other unit that you can buy an upgrade for and deploy it separately, wherever you like without rules governing how and where?
SW birds are 18"
IG IP units follow DMUC on p121
etc...

Since it's it's own "unit" persay like any other fast attack, heavy support ect, I would say... it is probably the least selfish to play honorably and keep it within "coherency" of the ADL and following the 3 inch rule.
