We all know the Necron flyer spam list is one of the toughest lists to beat. Lets assume as the new codexes trickle into 6th edition, more armies will have more ways to deal with flyers, thus knocking down the power of these flyer spam list. My question is, do the Crons have enough versitility in their codex to still be a rock solid army without the use of any flyers? I would like to start a Necron army but dont want to be stuck with only being able to play one way or not be cometitive with all the other armies.

Oh yeah, there are some great units in there. Warriors and Immortals are solid, Wraiths are awesome, CCBs are pretty damn good, and the barge that helps resurrect Warriors is pretty damn good too. Scarab farm lists can be tough depending on the matchup, and even some of the more esoteric stuff like Lychguard or what have you can still find a use. The only truly awful unit is Flayed Ones. As long as you don't use them much you should do pretty well for yourself.

Scarabs and Wraiths are some of the best assault units in the game, so they'll definitely be able to hold their ground. As much as I hate to say it, Necrons will be an incredibly powerful army, even beyond the 6th edition flyer shenanigans. They are just so well rounded while providing so much raw power that they should be able to handle any challenge for a long time. As much as I hate Matt Ward, he kind of wrote the definitive codex for 6th edition. It can handle basically anything, it has great options to handle almost anything, and it's got the right point values to handle even the most anti-meta efforts.

Honestly, if they found a way to make the 5/6th edition Necrons irrelevant, it would involve changing the entire metagame just to exclude them. As far as I am concerned (and much to my chagrin), Necrons are the perfect army.

Where you least expect me

Annihilation barges do fine on staying alive. They have better armorial than.predetors and they cost less. Necrons have their doomsday cannons meant to take out any big threats. Heavy destroyers are good. Flyers are mostly just distractions for the big guns and tanks like the monolith. Necrons would be fine without flyers.

I agree with the above they have a tool for every situation. Im currecntly testing every unit in the dex in 2k point battles. So far ive not come across anything that is just usless, mind you i havnt played flayed ones yet as they look the weakest. But you can build a list for just about anything. You want to field hordez? Bing 20 man blobs of warriors with their transports that can rez dudes. Want to play deathstar bring royal courts with 5 decked out lords with one of the best CC weapons in the game that isnt swung at I1 and 2+/3++ Save and 5 teks with 36" s8 ap2 assault weapons. Plus any list can desl with vehicles thanks to the gauss special rule. Overall i love playing my necrons and each week it feels like im bringing something different to the table.

Everything in the necron codex is a viable option depending on what you are doing with them. Even the flayed ones which are probably the worst unit in the book can still fulfill certain purposes. On the charge a unit of them gets 80 attacks. They can outflank, deepstrike or infiltrate.

Of course I am not saying they are good. They very clearly are not good. They just aren't as bad as other people say. The main reason why they are "bad" is because the necron book has so many actually good units that there is no reason to take a mediocre one.

As for necron lists without fliers. I actually don't take fliers in my necron lists. I just don't care for them. I might take 1-2 as transports if I am taking immortals. But I tend to like the "feel" of teleportation technology instead of vehicles. So I like taking monoliths and veils. And yes, I know the "fluff" behind the nightscythe is that the models are being teleported out of it.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

Alex F's list to win the tournament yesterday had no flyers in it. Just like it had no flyers when it was on the final table at the NOVA Invitational. Just like it had no flyers when he won the Onslaught GT earlier this year.

Necrons don't need flyers by any means. They're just another tool in their well-stocked toolkit.

The nercon flier spam is just another gimmic list for players with no skill, you don't need fliers to win a game in 6th, you just need a plan.

Or maybe it's the list for people that really like flying saucers.
