Check out the rounds. They look a lot like bolter rounds and they probably kick like a bolter round would as well.

What, no shots of the target?

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps they couldn't find what was left of it...

Mk19 always made me think of a bolter.

You know, when I wasn't holding the bolt back and retrieving a live round that misfired during firefights.

At least I had my Witchfire powers to fall back on if weapons malfunctioned.

Note to self: Use Biomancy instead of Pyromancy, because fire doesn't heal

Ha, that's scary. I do want to see the target though.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere close when that goes off, mainly because of the massive noise it must put off.

Thought bolters had no kick, which is why non space marines can use them without being as patient as these guys.

That's debatable. GW might have put in some fancy thing, but logically they'd have some variety of kick - I mean, they're firing ROCKETS for god's sake. The fact that they're self-propelled after launch means they'd just need enough kick to get them beyond the barrel, though.

Technically they shouldn't have very much, as they are essentially mini-rpgs, but a lot of current depictions show them ejecting shell casings and having significant kick. Probably, this is done to make bolters look "cooler," since the common "Hollywood gunfight" trope is what most people are familiar with (and thus what people expect to see).

If you imagine that the bolter round is fired normally, then engages its own propulsion, this sorta makes sense. That isn't canon anywhere though.

There is a real world equivalent to bolters (albeit not the ridiculous calibre), called Gyrojets. As expected there's very little recoil.

Yeah, I've always assumed they were either similar to Gyrojets, or something like a 40mm grenade. I don't think that's too far off, really. The only problem is that 40mm grenades are lobbed, not shot directly at an opponent (except with a MK19).

I'm sure they could design a fuel that lasts long enough to propel the projectile past 1000m in the 41st millenium, whiile also making the projectile itself rip apart flesh and basically everything else the way Bolts do.

Original canon (Rogue Trader) was that bolter rounds were caseless, rocket rounds. Caseless has obviously gone by the wayside given the amounts of flying brass seen in illustrations. Rounds could still be rockets with a small launch charge that would probably still give a bit of a kick...
