Firstly, I thought I'd start a thread for this book. I searched, and there was only one existing thread asking about whether the rules can be used in a standard game of 40k, so figured this was fair game.

Now that's been said.. How many of you have grabbed this book, and what does everyone think?

Personally, my thoughts are as follows. Upon picking up the book, the first thing I noticed was just how thick it was. This thing is a monster, definitely looks physically awesome, and the quality of the workmanship as well is incredible.
I was very impressed.

As for the content, there is a heap of background fluff, if that's your thing, I don't doubt you will enjoy this book, although, most of the fluff, from the little I read, seems to be stuff that can all be found elsewhere, although spread throughout countless sources.
Again the rules, haven't read though them all in great detail yet, but they seem very detailed and fun. HEAPS of rules for heaps of cool new pre-heresy units, should be awesome. Horus is a beast! Also great to see there's some extra missions, and campaign rules, very cool, and looking forward to playing some Pre-Heresy games at my local gaming club with others who have picked up the book.

One thing I was disappointed in, is no hobby section. I think it would be really cool to have had a section with pre-heresy painting schemes, and perhaps some ideas or even pictures of pre-heresy terrain. That being said, one could make a fair argument that this type of content is more suited to White Dwarf, especially now with their new content style.

Overall I also think there could have been more artwork, but overall, not bad at all.

Very impressive from Forgeworld, now we just need some more models to fill the gaps!

Anyway, looking forward to hearing others thoughts/opinions/feedback and general ideas. Let the discussion commence!

Love the rules, though curious how well they'll continue the updates.

Bump. Surely there's a lot more discussion to be had of this book?

Not many people are going to spree buy a 60+$ book, so there's going to be a bit of hesitation for a while.

I'm just thrilled about the troops choice for Mechanicus,

S5/T5 monsters with Lightning guns that can be equipped with archeotech that boosters their purpose, and powerful heavy weapons, and could pretty much smack down normal marines from both range and melee? I love it! Not to mention the Grand Magos is nice and sweet too, though I'm hoping for more mechancius options later on, what we got is pretty sweet but we won't see to much until the Dark Mechanicus and the Mechanicus forces pull in fully.

Really? I'm a little sad on the tiny mechanicus section. OF course they're going to release the mechanicus army list tiny piece by tiny piece knowing my luck.

I'm glad we actually got some representation at all, and it's a pretty decent choice for both it's HQ and troops, I am a bit disappointed at how little there is, but at this point I was almost expecting them to gloss over the actual troops and HQ's and throw out just the titans as another Mechanicus standby.

A couple of units per book. I'd buy 'em all for that alone.

Now we just need to see some models. C'mon FW - get the Thallaxii out there!

Anyone have any thoughts to legion prowess?

World Eaters have some awesome, unique melee weapons, and rampagers are sure to break things in combat, Deathshroud terminators are decently powerful, but slow, the swordsmen are decent rending and can be I6 on the charge, and with crusade will get to combat much faster.

Not sure what place the Justeeran Terminators have compared to the others though, even if they are awesome. Though getting the dreadclaw was a huge boost, as it allows for an assault dropstrike.

You'd avoid purchasing a beautiful, leatherbound book that is positively rammed with material just because it doesn't feature a couple of pages of models at the back? We have Dakka and the internet for a reason.

I bought this at Games Day UK a few weeks back.

Safe to say I love it, also picked up an Angron too

The detail and content of the book is outstanding as well as the book itself being quite a beautiful thing to look at and own.

The list seems quite interesting, I'm still trying to work out a decent list for my Pre-Heresy World Eaters but I'm not too sure as the wealth of options is really making it hard for me to decide.

The only negative I can say about the book was the price, but even then it wasn't that bad, once I'd read through it I felt that it justified it's cost and I've payed £70 for something worth probably more in my opinion but I can see why it scares people.

I think that it is a heavy chainsword for 2 reasons.
First it is a 2 handed weapon and the heavy chainblade only replaces a close combat weapon.
Second it is wielded by a normal marine not aThallax.
but it still looks awesome

The forge world books almost never include a modeling section, so I'm not surprised it is missing. Usually they have color plates with uniform color displayed, though. Odd if those are missing. The forge world books are campaign books and not modeling books. They are about the history, story and battles involved and not specifically about the models, especially given that the books are written so far in advance of the models being released.

Often if pictures of models are included, it is in battlefield "photos"...

That pretty accurately describes the book. There are some battlefield 'photos' with models in them, and there are some colour references to schemes. Having never bought a Forgeworld book before I wasn't sure what to expect, but that being said, still very impressed with the book.

Thought it was stunning tbh.
I've read most of the FW books and imo they range from great (IA3 - Taros) to average (IA4 - Anphelion) to pretty poor (IA9 - Mymeara).
This however was brilliant, it reminded my of the old 2nd ed Codexes with options and "addons" up the wazzoo, fascinating fluff and history and simjply well written (which can be very hit and miss to find nowadays with GW stuff).

The section on the 4 Legion backgrounds and history was a thouroughly juicy read, very well written and expanded on.

The rules, whilst I havent played them seem cool, artwork as usual is great, format is spot on and it captured the sheer epicness and lost feeling of the HH.
It'll cost you a few quid, sure (espeically paying exchange rates + shipping - €110! ouch) but if you havent picked it up and have any interest in Marines (although it gives a really nice new spin on them) and the HH, pick up a copy.

I genuinely dont think you will be disappointed. Horribly tempted to take out some insane loan and collect the Emps because of it.

Yes I do, but I was expecting more then just Thallax and Mechanicum Land Raiders. They mention Myrmidons and Skitarii at one point but they're not in there. I have long dreamed for the days of a full Mechanicus List with a range of HQ/Elite/Troop/Fast Attack/Heavy Options. This is certainly a step forward and I think as this series goes we'll get there eventually, but it won't be for a while (hence the sad panda).

Agreed... maybe, we'll see them slowly introduced in the back of the series 2-4 units at a time. Certainly seems possible looking at book #1

Book #2 is already announced "Massacre". Its been awhile, but if I remember correctly the AM wasn't heavily involved on either side of the Drop Site Massacre, which given the timeline and name says what book #2 is about.

I saw a game recently where one player took Horus and what would be the Mournival against a 1500 point force of Marines.

Horus and the Mournival destroyed everything they came into contact with.

Horus in particular is the single most brutal model in the game now. I can't see how anything can take him out.
