I will be playing in a tournament coming up and it allows 40k approved Forgeworld units. I am thinking of adding a unit or two to my IG force with possible marine or CSM allies. What recommendations does everyone have for Forgeworld units.
I have heard good things about Sabre platforms for anti-air and there are a slew of LR variants by Forgeworld. The Sabre platforms might help if I run against a Flying Croissant list.
I will be running a mix of chimera vets and infantry blobs supported by Vendettas, artillery, and LR tanks.
Thanks!

Sooo, you're looking to add anti-air to your list, yet you have Vendettas? Really?

Hey thanks for the constructive response!
3 vendettas do nothing to stop Cronair if they don't come on after the 8 Cron fliers do. They just get shot down.

Learn good positioning to stop necron air. With minimum moves and a large base, you can force them to fly over you half the time, leaving half the actual threats to deal with.
Forge World is mostly helpful to xenos, I'm not sure there are any obvious better choices for iom armies.

Yeah i'm not entirely looking for anti-air. If there are some cheap units I could take I would, but i'm more concerned with the whole line in general, especially the tank variants.
It would also be good to know what Xenos units I should be prepared to see.

Watch out for hades drills, blight drones, and contemptors. They are nasty. Also be aware of dread drop pods with ironclads.

The hades drill allows a unit to deep strike right? Kinda like a underground Drop pod? No idea what blight drones and contemptors do.

Blight Drones are a nurgle daemon flyer that basically has a Battlecannon. No use against enemy air but devestating against ground targets. They're fairly cheap too.
Contemptors are an uparmored dreadnought that has an invulnerable save and lots of armament options. It can have 2 DCCWs. It can have 2 Kheres Assault Cannons and a Typhoon missile rack(don't get in range, just don't!) and an assortment of other standard dreadnought equipment.
For your IG, the Vulture Gunship is a viable choice. Its basically a Vendetta with different wargear and no transport capacity( IIRC)
It has Strafing run so its BS4 against ground target.
It can have a punisher cannon, rocket pods, and a TL-missile launcher. If you arn't using Vendettas to transport units, its a good choice to spice up the army.
And a BS4 punisher cannon thats reason enough.
Then there is the Avenger Strike Fighter.
It has an Avenger Bolt Cannon. which is basically a stripped down Vulkan Megabolter.
Also has a TL-lascannon and can purchase another IIRC(or can swap for multilasers)

Awesome thanks for your reply! I thought research is exactly what I was doing.
Seriously though? Why make the effort to criticise someone who just asking questions in order to be more informed about the game.
I see a lot of people getting shouted down on these forums for simply taking a different viewpoint about the game. If I wanted to talk to the L2P/ITG crowd I'd go to a MMO forum.
There are a lot of really good posters here, but I am seeing way too many people who like act like the big 40k tough guy.

Thank you guys, those units sound great. Vulture might be too tempting to resist. Is that in the Imperial Armor Aeronautica book?

But the Avenger is in Aeronautica.

A hades drill allows a unit to deep strike in the manner that trygons do(tunneling). But where they come you hit that unit with the equivalent of a demolisher cannon(large blast, str 10, ap1or2 can't remember)
Also if the contemptor doesn't move it has skyfire. The kheres assault cannons are heavy 6!!!!!!! Str 6 rending.

Consider Land Raider Achilles (with seige sheild) with a squad of Gray hunters (5) and a rune priest. Trade your powers for Divination... regardless of what you roll, take the 'guide' style primaris power.
Your shooting phase becomes very fun with a dead eye Thunderfire cannon. Well, fun for you.

blanket statement that I am afraid is not true. IG just got a lot of FW stuff into its codex so it doesnt need it anymore.
DE get nothing useful out of FW. The few tanks there are twice as expensive as they should be and compete for the most competitive force org slots Automatically Appended Next Post: scimitar wrote:Competitive Forgeworld units Non-Apocalypse

Stay classy Dakka.
No need to get upset.
Dakka cannot function as rulebook/codexes/supplements.
I noticed you needed some more in-depth information about the three units you mentioned.
The Blight Drone carries a surprising amount of fire power, the Contemptor is a pretty cheap and harsh form of dreadnought, and the Hades Breaching Drill will take you by surprise if you see it as "just" an underground Drop Pod.
The specifics cannot be provided by Dakka. They have to be gotten elsewhere.
There was no criticism, no shouting down of different opinions and no tough guy posturing.
This is obviously things that rightly so bothers you, but it didn't happen here.
Merely a; "Whoops. This guy will be surprised, and not in the the "Honey, I made your favorite cake", kind of way"- type situation.

Fixed that for you. Contemptors aren't bad, but they're severely limited by the 200-250 point cost for a decent setup.

A Rifleman Contemptor cost 40 points more than a regular Rifleman Dreadnought.
Those 40 points gives you;
+1 Strength (not a big deal)
+1 Front Armour (making you immune to Krak Grenades)
+1 Ballistic skill (nice)
+5 Invulnerable versus shooting (good), 6+ Invulnerable versus close combat (irrelevant)
Skyfire and Interceptor when standing still. (further enhancing the effectiveness of the Rifleman-setup)
The option of a Cyclone Missile Launcher in addition to arm weapons (at additional cost, mind)
You can argue that Rifleman is not a decent setup or you can argue that 40 points is too costly for the above mentioned gains.
I disagree with both of those arguments.
No need to "fix" my post....at all.

Worthless.
+1 Front Armour (making you immune to Krak Grenades)
Decent against shooting, but immunity to krak grenades is worthless on a unit that stays 48" away and will die to shooting, not assault.
+1 Ballistic skill (nice)
Nearly worthless. TL BS 4 is already 90% hit rate, so going to TL BS 5 isn't that big a deal, and certainly not for that many points.
+5 Invulnerable versus shooting (good), 6+ Invulnerable versus close combat (irrelevant)
Decent, but not impressive. Cover is 5+ and easy to get when you have 48" range weapons, so an invulnerable save is kind of situational.
Skyfire and Interceptor when standing still. (further enhancing the effectiveness of the Rifleman-setup)
Finally, a decent option. This is what makes it useful, but is it worth 40 points?
The option of a Cyclone Missile Launcher in addition to arm weapons (at additional cost, mind)
Exactly. It's a very nice upgrade, but it isn't included in the base price.
You can argue that Rifleman is not a decent setup or you can argue that 40 points is too costly for the above mentioned gains.
40 points IS too costly. It's great to have 1-2 Contemptors for AA duty, but it's really an "all your eggs in one basket" unit. If you try to rely heavily on them you quickly discover that your army consists of a handful of dreads and nothing else.
(And don't forget that the rifleman dread is good because it's CHEAP, not because it's awesome. Take away the cheap factor and it's much less impressive.)

As far as I am aware there's no way to include a hades drill in a regular guard army without resorting to dkok allies.

looking at how much flakk missiles are on the new chaos havocs, 40 points might not be a bad deal for skyfire and intercept.
5 havocs with 4 missile launchers is 135 points. giving them skyfire missiles is 40 points.

The vast bulk of the Imperial units are just meh or overpriced.
Most of the time you are better off just taking whats in the codex.
FW is about running awsome looking models that have some neat special rules and to be different.
Yes I'm playing a IG army, but its DKoK. which is way awsome.
