Probably been covered before, but how much humor do you put in your GRIMDARK modeling efforts? Personally, I am the gamer your mother warned you about - if I can go for the humor I will. Course I play orks, which are supposed to be the comic relief army, but I think some silliness in your work is acceptable. Discussion please.

For me it depends on what army I'm going with, the most humor I use is for the fluff's sake. But I remember seeing an ogre kingdoms army which had a christmas theme, some ogre were snowmen with carrot noses, and the leader was Santa Claus. 'twas funny!

The humor for me comes from actually playing. I do weird gak, I make vehicle sounds, Ill insult the actual leader of opponents armies and things like that. Lately when I get to my my boyz awesome armor saves, Ill shout "GO GO TSHIRT SAVES!" And roll the dice. It actually seems to do worse then normal, but I dont care

Lately, not so much, my marines are srs bsnss. But when I started way back when, one of my fondest modeling memories, and most humouristic things to date as far as 40k is involved, was a space marine with a rubber chicken for a melee weapon. It was a tiny yellow plastic chicken from some playset that I tinkered up so that my guy was holding it by the feet...

Considering how SM are, I bet that rubber chicken could rip a man's head with ease.
I just started War Gaming and painting, so my necrons are all being painted in a no-nonsense way, but I would love to paint / convert miniatures with a more fun side and I would love to see more of it on the table.

Tzeentch Aspiring Sorcerer Riding a Disc
Battle Barge Impossible Fortress
|
I've learned that occasionally naming a miniature after a celebrity reaps good reward.
For example, I had an Aspiring Sorcerer named Gary Busey leading one of my units of Tsons.
He has (and still does) crazy stuff that you wouldn't expect.
Ask anyone who knows me- Boneblade, furbyballer, Aspartame, Rejn, whoever.
Need Lysander to take that last wound? AP 4 Gary Busey.
Need a Swarmlord to get Instakilled? AP4 Force Stave Gary Busey.
Need two Tervigons to be Instakilled? AP4 Force Stave Gary Busey.
Because of these feats, "Gary" was promoted to Ahriman's LT and now serves as an HQ unit.
Strangely, his 'good luck' seems to have left since his promotion.
Have to take an armor save on Gary? Nope, 1.
Stand by for demotion.

Mine are pretty serious (Imperial Guard) Though I am theming them on G.I. Joe now, If I ever start another army I'm thinking about Orks, and I plan to make them as funny as possible. My problem is a lack of imagination, so many of my ideas will likely be plagiarized. :(

What little I've done with my armies, thus far, has all been on the serious side. I'm far from opposed to humor in P&M - it just doesn't jive with the look and feel I want in an army, so I plan to restrict it to one-offs. I converted an AoBR Warboss into Santa Klawz as a Christmas gift for my fiance, last year, and I have a few other vague plans for silly models and/or dioramas, but there's no guarantee I'll ever get around to starting (let alone finishing) them.

Not really humour, but i am going for the old school blue and yellow with red guns ultra marine scheme. Its looking pretty good but i am making at cheesey as hell (Flame pattern on my las cannon) so its not exactly going for humour, but it isn't too serious either. That said i think for Orks it is always good to have a bit of a laugh. In fantasy i think you have more freedom for comic relief (Drunk dwarves, plenty of comical goblins/ squigs and ogres etc.) I did one make a festive LORT cave troll with a beard and santa hat. not sure what happened to it though.

The only humor I've put into my marines is I copped a move from a mini I saw online. And took the outstretched right arm with plasma cannon, which I put with the left hand from the missile launcher marine. it looks like he's shielding himself from the plasma gun. That's it.

I enjoy the occasional humorous/insulting model. For example one of my Necron Lords is modeled in a way that he gives his opponent the bird. Of course, he was granted this conversion after my buddies nicknamed him Commander Douchecock due to my favorite loadout (this is 3rd edition mind you) of Nightmare shroud, Veil of Darkness, and a Warscythe and my ridiculous good luck.
