Hi
Checking out whats needed from a rule book perspective for Infinity, I like to get books rather than download PDF's.
I believe these are the latest versions, if someone could explain what the second and third books bring to the game that would be fantastic.
Thanks

Human Sphere and Campaign: Paradiso both add a fairly large list of unit types, equipment, weapons, rules and the occasional update.
Human Sphere, for example, introduced Fireteams (basically, mini-squads that can be used by Sectorial armies), Sectorial armies (variant themed army lists) and introduced Aleph (the forces of the only official human AI) as a playable faction.
Paradiso introduces the Tohaa (a new alien race specialising in biological tech, with the distinction of having organised the best resistance to the Combined Army so far), the first Aleph sectorial - but mostly, campaign rules, including the new Spec-Ops - customisable "characters" who can develop through the campaigns.
There's more fluff in both books too. I would definitely recommend Human Sphere - I can't comment on Paradiso, as it's so new it's only out in Spain this far!
In any case, I would seriously recommend downloading the PDFs first! Not only do they contain errata not yet in the print books, they are at least free, so you can learn and try the rules before investing €120!

Yup thats all you need to get going. The first rulebook is the original (2nd edition is the most recent update to the book - the one being sold), with Human Sphere being the expansion (adding new units/weapons/rules as well as Sectorials for each of the factions), Campaign Paradiso is the new book that hasnt reached most places yet (just ordered mine, the Spanish ones have only just arrived so much speculation is in order as questions are asked of the lucky few with one...) and it introduces Campaign rules, some new rules, a Sectorial for ALEPH and a new faction in the Tohaa... However, the PDFs that are on the main site are really all you need to play. Those combined with the Wiki really do explain everything. The only thing different you get (other than a rather spiffy book) is the fluff and artwork that is included, otherwise there is nothing missing from the online versions...saying that, i got the books just because they are cool Just a note, there are rules updates and new units on the website (under Downloads-Army Lists-New Profiles) that wont be in the book (or will be the old ones in the case of McMurrough for example)... If you want more of an explanation on Sectorials (or anything else for that matter) just ask and im sure someone will answer (i will if i can get online tomorrow and know the answer ) EDIT: Ninja'd like a Boss...

No worries, happy to help
Dont get me wrong as well, the books are gorgeous and well worth investing in, but the rules are free (if you can print at work, always a good start...)

Yes right, it's important to note that the best place to read the background is in the rulebooks. I believe you can get bits and pieces elsewhere (in the miniature descriptions on the website etc.) which give you some impression of the game universe, but the rulebooks are where most of it is at. As books themselves they are really nicely made and set out, you get loads of artwork and miniature pictures etc. For £30 or so (you can probably get a bit of a discount if you shop around) I would say they are definitely worth it, although as Revenant Reiko and MarcoSkoll has pointed out above they are by no means strictly necessary!
If you don't get the rulebook, I would probably recommend printing off the rule PDFs onto good paper, and even getting them bound properly so you can access them easily. Which you will probably need to do a lot during the first games!
An alternative which a friend and I use is to have an iPad/Galaxy or whatever near you during play (we usually use a combination of the above).
You will find Corvus Belli uses an array of tempting morsels and a silk glove to tempt and coerce you into playing their games and ultimately buying their stuff. It makes a change to an iron fist bludgeoning you repeatedly in the head before bundling you into a sack, dragging your unconscious body to a store and then forcing you at gunpoint to buy everything to play the game (to use a ridiculously extreme analogy to some other companies! )

In no case get me wrong, the books are very worth having, for reference, fluff, art and the like - a lot of the fluff is ONLY in the books.
However, I would certainly recommend trying the rules before buying the rules - that way, should they not be to your liking, you've not spent £30/€40 per book.

The books as great I own both and will have the Campaign book and GoGo in my hands soon, I hope anyways.
Saying that, only the new Campaign book is a must buy, and then only if you want the campaign rules. As the rest of the rules in the book will be free online in a few months.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor. |
