Subject: Commissar Yarrick?

Calculating Commissar

So I have been looking at the less popular options in the guard codex and I came across Commissar Yarrick. I am wondering if there is any way to run him effectively? He seems like the optimal pick for Warlord with his ability to stand up and doesn't seem terrible at challenges. I like the look of him, but can he really carry his weight in your average Imperial guard army?

You are 100% correct. He is a less popular option.
For the points, you can get a vastly better command platoon, mount them in a chimmera, and hide it behind a bastion (5 points cheaper than Yarrik all alone).

Yarrick with 10 Ogryns, it will cost a ton of points, it won't be extremely efficient but boy will you have a blast.

While that may be true, that command squad can only give out orders because it has no upgrades. Yarrick, while incapable of orders, is armed to the teeth and hands out stubborn like candy on October 31st.

I just recently picked Yarrick up to try to see if I could use him competitivly but it doesnt seem like it. First off what really annoyed me was a Commissar Lord has a 5++ Yarricks force field just makes the enemy reroll wounds allocated to him...That is not better at all because at toughness 4(i believ) its not that hard to wound him. Sure he cant be insta killed but that doesnt help much when you have a 4+ save and no invuln save. It seems it would be better to run him with a blob of 30+ guys so that when hes in a challenge you can get some reroll because idk but a s6 power fist with 3 attacks doesnt seem like it does much and really it doesnt. Since he really has no good save and doesnt hit hard or a lot i find it really hard to use him,, unless you run a lot of infantry to make use of his 12in stubborn bubble and its best to run a blob as they are fearless.

True, the lack of an invul hurts, but he has EW and a 3+ "Get back up" roll, not to mention the forcefield. I think it balances out in that regard, but I do agree that the lack of an invul hurts.

I dont think it will balance because if he takes a challenge most enemy characters will have some sort of power weapon with ap3 and since yarrick swings at initiative 1 that yarrik that stood up just fell right over. He could be good but you really have to run 30+man blobs and probably more than one of those. If I do recall he grants furious charge to his unit and the turn they assault they can reroll to hit? That could be very nice to use! and if yarricks in a challenge those rerolls from the surviving guardsmen will be nice, does he have 3 or 4 attacks with the claw, i dont have my codex on me.

Stubborn is nice, that's about all Yarrick has ever done imo. I'd rather take the CCS give them all plasma guns/pistol and have them +60 compared to Yarrick.

Yarrick has certainly gotten better in 6th ed than he was before. He's the best single model for challenges as you say (say hello to eternal warrior), and his buffs got better in a world of regular commissars disappearing from lists. Plus, yeah, new warlord stuff. Slayed my warlord you say? Really? Nope!
That said, he's still ultra-expensive, and close combat, his one forte, just got a lot worse in this edition. Basically, you're going to spend nearly 200 points for some guy who hides behind a bunch of guardsmen, waiting for something to get close enough to run out and nail him in close combat with a power fist.
If that's all you wanted, a powerfist officer will do this at a fraction of yarrick's points (and that fraction is 1/3rd). I think I'd rather the officer's buffs (orders, standard, advisers, etc.), over yarrick's, and if your opponent fails to bring a credible CC threat into your lines, there's less wasted, and you can make the CCS shootier to boot.
He's not the biggest waste in the world, but you've really got to build the rest of your list around him to really get the most out of his obscene points cost. If you're not doing that, then just leave him at home.

Yarrick is mainly a defensive CC character who depends on his Iron Will to stay alive. I think he is like the DE's Urien Rakarth; he is really cool and has very nice abilities, but just like you can get 3 kitted Haemonculi for the Price of Rakarth, you can get 3 kitted Commissars or 2 Commissar Lords/CCS for the price of Yarrick. If you really want a CC character, you can get Colonel Straken for a much lower price. He has a chainfist that strikes in initiative order and a plasma pistol and T4 and power armor and an invul save, he also makes his unit fearless just like Yarrick does. He just lacks eternal warrior and IC. Easier to kill in a challenge, maybe, but effective nonetheless.

Yarrick is basically an inferior and more expensive version of St. Celestine.
Since St. Celestine is completely broken, that doesn't actually make him bad, but I'd have a hard time picking him given that he's not even the best model in the game at executing his particular gimmick.

on the topic of Celestine, while she is very cheap, she can't really be compared to Yarrick.. No stubborn bubble, T3 means she's wounded easily and doesnt have his re-roll and she always wounds on 4+, where as Yarrick will wound on 2+ against most stuff.
As previously mentionned however, Yarrick leading 10 Ogryns, while very expensive, is nasty. Unless it's a str10 blast, any wounds that could instant kill an ogryn, Yarrick can eat at the front. Anything else can be LoS quite reliably
Once they get into assault, and they usually will with that many wounds, you have a T5 W3 model to take challenges while Yarrick goes to town on the unit.

celestine also isnt EW and while she can get back up on a 4+ every time she dies, she dies a lot being toughness 3, best way to keep her alive is with seraphim so she gets a re-roll invuln

This. Orders make your dudes much better, and IIRC there are some orders that regular platoon dudes

Yea the Company Commander may not have eternal warrior like yarrick but hes also got an invuln save that is somewhat nice against ap weapons. If your going with a CCS im pretty sure yyou could make one much better than yarrick for about the same points.
you could go the standard beat stick CCS and have CC with plasma pistol and the 4 veterans having 4 plasma guns in a chimera. only 175 so 10pts cheaper and you have a transport with some range and 4 plasma guns and a plasma pistol. Yes theres a potential it will kill itsself but I guarantee anything in rapid fire range will take a lot of shots! lol
For gunline I would go
Lascannon
Cammo cloaks
Regimental Standard
plasma gun
That is only 120pts and if you want to add close combat weapons to your CC the fist and a plasm pistol or would make it 145pts so now our CC can do some damage but the troops around you have a better moral and pinning as they can reroll. you could even give him a boltgun for 2pts.
If you wanted to try assaulty
x2 body guards
Power fist
plasma pistol
Carapace armor
x4 flamers(200pts with chimera,145 without)
x4 melta(220pts with chimera, 165 without)
Not to mention you also can give orders with those CCS to buff your infantry and make them better. Obviously the mech one is what i would use for mech altho that is pretty much also an all around unit as well and the gunline for gunline, but if im running the gunline one ive got reserves coming so I would take an astropath to make my vendettas and all my other reserves come in on time.
I also used Yarrick yesterday in a 200pt game and had a base gunline CCS with one platoon with 4 inf squads with Autocannons and the other platoon with 3 inf squads with a melta gun each blobbed up with Yarrick. leman russ exectioner with plasma sponsons, battle tank squadron x2 battle tanks, and a manticore, marbo, x2 vendettas with each PCS with x4 flamers a piece riding in them and the great might defence line. Personally if yur running Yarrick I think it is best to charge him up with your whole army but you need to give his squad significant cover. You could keep him back in your gunline as a counter charge unit but to be honest Yarrick doesnt seem to be much, his unit being fearless is nice and the stubborn bubble is great but I believe that unless yarrick has an invuln that 180pts can drop down fast, yes he will get back up but hopefully you make overwatch. I was gunna post i tried using him a week ago and he got killed and got back up and went to assault the same unit which was some sorceror but he overwatched yarrick with an ap2 weapon and hit and killed yarrick before he could get into combat. Yarrick then died and it was a disappointing game. Anyone got a list that thinks it would be compettitive or even slightly competitve with Yarrick at 2000ps?

Actually, I'd take straken and kell in a CCS. A little more expensive, but you get way, way more buffs through orders and the actual buffs themselves. You get more powerfist attacks as well, and more wounds.
The combo isn't potentially permanent, but still.
As for yarrick v. celestine, I agree that that's a hell of a stretch. Basically the only thing they have in common is the ability to get back up on a 4+. For everything else, though, they're rather different units.
