I figured it's going to be a long wait at the polls for this election since the last presidential contest cost me a couple of hours waiting, so I stopped by the city center today to vote. It took me all of about half an hour to get in and out.
Any one else here taking advantage of this?

Me and Kronk, but not at the same location. Our incompetent local government never sent my car registration so I had to go to the tax office to get it, and voting was right next door. Hurray!

Can't early vote until next weekend.

Got the most unconventional yet legal ID I could come up with, let them try to issue me a provisional ballot...

Virginia doesn't have early voting for reasons that escape me.

Means I get to go want to kill myself at the retirement home that is my polling place in early November, along with the rest of northern Virginia.

Seriously, screw you guys that get to get it over with. Screw you right to heck.

There are numerous other reasons to go to your voting place and vote. You can leave the president check mark blank, while still filling in votes for other things.

Here in Maryland, for instance, there are 7 non-election issues up for referendum, as well as 6? county non-election issues up.

For instance, expansion of gambling in Maryland, whether to allow Gay Marriage or not. 10 or 11 things that you get to have a say in.

But if you'd rather stamp your feet and throw a temper tantrum, knock yourself out.

Yeah even if you want to skip the presidential election there's really no excuse not to vote.

Once again Texas superior (insert some other place here) inferior!

How does the mail in ballot work? Are you concerned you ballot, like most of my mail, never gets delivered.

I'd like online voting but with so much easy computer hacking fraud I'm against it.
I'd just rather have something not like those stupid dial things Texas has and has something at least century. Alternatively I'd really like to go back to the old punch cards. That was so satisfying, and you had a real piece of paper. I don't trust that my vote really means what I say it means because I don't get a paper readout. MGS and I are actually in some agreement on that.

If you can't legally vote, that's another matter. One you should resolve ASAP.

And yes, your vote does matter. Voting matters. It's how you have a say in what goes on around you. State referendums are, quite literally, the state's way of saying "What do you guys want?" If you don't vote, you aren't getting your say.

No it really doesnt, one vote, my one vote, doesnt matter, yes, the pool of non-voters does matter, but unless you can convince all of them at once, that vote one vote doesnt matter.

You register online with the State, they mail you a ballot, an envelope and a security sleeve, you fill it out, send it back. I've voted with a mail in ballot since I became legal to vote and as far as I know it's always gotten where it needed to go.

Good. I implore anyone not deeply involved to never vote. You muck it up for the rest of us.
I think to vote you have to take a test in basic economics, math, US history, US government, and how the Bill of Rights works. Maybe a cooking test as well.

In MD, referendum laws are passed by simply majority. 50%+1

1 vote can make or break a law. That 1 vote, and every other vote behind it, matters a lot.

The people who stay home, don't matter. They decided to give up their say in how their state is governed, which is fine, that's their choice. But in the scheme of laws in my state, the people who don't vote, don't matter. The people who do vote, do. Plain and simple.

No early voting in NY (backwards state) and I have to work on the 3rd and 4th of November in Alabama. So...feth it, I need an absentee ballot. Time to go visit the municipal building later this week.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It would be awesome if everyone in the swing states all decided to vote early, just to waste the parties' money

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

I would respect that. It has an ancillary benefit. I threw a Mging Director out of my office for spouting politics by practically shouting "I already voted! No more politics!"

Didnt we kinda ban test for voting because it disenfracised others?
But this reminds me of last semester, I served free hot dogs for peeople who voted. The only reason the people who voted was because of that,
Now if they gave uss free meals for voting i would be in.

I have to say that even though I'm fairly disenfranchised with the systems as a whole, I spent a good 4 hours researching my ballot, from federal elections all the way down to city ordinances. If nothing else, I have a good history of how my elected officials have behaved in the past. I'm not worried if my choices aren't winning the popular vote, I've got a chance to state my views on things.

Good Ol' postal voting.

GW Rules Interpretation Syndrom. GWRIS. Causes people to second guess a rule in a book because that's what they would have had to do in a GW system.

Was it not the sedition act of 1917 that allowed the US postmaster general to open any mail he deemed to be against American interests. You can bet the UN is using that loophole to look at postal voting.

If you're going to go that far, you might as well invent a whole new system of leadership. After all, currently we have a meritocracy (as it should be) but rather than a meritocracy based on who's the best leader, we have a meritocracy based on who's the most charismatic candidate, and everyone votes for him. And while changing who can vote would help against this, it wouldn't completely change it. We could really do with a complete overhaul of the system.
