Just kind of curious about how champions upgrades work in the new chaos codex..
Do champions have access to the options of their unit?
IE terminator champions, can they buy the pair of lightning claws for 7 points like their unit? or do they have to purchase it from the terminator weapons in the wargear list for.. 17 and 5, so 22? Just seems silly..

"The Aspiring Champion may take items
from the Melee Weapons and/ or
Ranged Weapons sections of the wargear list." pg 96 C:CSM
I'm not seeing your confusion. They have to choose from the wargear list on pg 91

yeah, they have to be more expensive so challenges hurt more (that and the fact its possible for them, heck a cultist champion to become a daemon prince!)

You also get precision shots and strikes on the champ.
A lightning claw the singles out the enemy sarg with power fist is a lot better than the lightning claw the maims the guy with the bolter.

Champions can only take what the unit can if it says something to the effect of " any model in the unit may purchase X" or "for X points per model every model in the unit may have Y"
Otherwise, he is stuck with his own option list.

It can be worth the extra points.
I played an apoc game yesterday where my berzerke Champion challenged and beat Death Company Tycho and my Terminator Champion chainfisted mephiston into a fine paste (ended up rolling FNP and re-roll armour saves, in addition to MON for that guy. sweeet)

Indeed. With the changes to Power Weapons a Terminator Champ with twin LC is incredibly good in challenges - there are few weapons with AP2 that will go before him, and a lot of champs will be in 3+ armour.

Yeah, I'm going to hazard a guess champion war gear is more expensive due to the challenge rules, and the possibility they can get super awesome buffs on top of their good weapons.
But yeah, the terminator champ has to pay the increased costs, at least that is the way I am reading it.

I field my terminator Champ with a Lightning Claw and a Chain Fist for extra versatility - it's paid off well so far.
Was thining of going dual chain fists for fun it bumps up his points to around the 80 point mark. eep!

Dual chain fists have no advantage vs. lightning claw and chain fist. You still get the bonus attack for two specialist weapons while mixing lc and cf.

Another reason i changed it. i still thought dual chain fists were the only way to get the second attack.
Plus good luck finding a right handed chain fist.

No point, having LC + CF is better than Dual CF in every way. You get +1 A in both cases, as the trigger is "Both weapons must be Specialist weapons" not "Both weapons must be same".

yes because paying 3x+1 as many points as your "rank & file dude" makes sense so that you can make the same number of attacks, at the same strength, same initiative and same weaponskill - BUT there is a potential that you may become a demon prince & thus lose all the wargear you paid a premium for. Bad rules are bad rules.

Its pretty clear what the codex allows as upgrades for the champion. I assume the OP doesn't own a copy, then?
Btw, gift of mutation is the most fun upgrade for the champions. I love rolling the charts.

Precision Strikes, challenges, Mutations and better survivability thanks to LOS! makes wargear a lot more useful in the hands of a champion. The extra cost makes sense.

it is pretty sweet.
Playing a game yesterday by team-mate ended up with a Socercer with:
Instant Death melee attacks
Re-Roll armour Saves
Witch Eater (passing deny the witch causes hit on the psyker)
Soulblaze Melee sttacks
In addition to his psyker rolls and wargear of:
Mark of Slaanesh (+1I)
a Psyker power "Crush"
a Psyker power "Firey Form"
a psyker power "Ecstatic Seisures"
the Murder Sword
Wings

sure, precision strike makes a lot of sense on my twin linked bolter dudesman.... especially when I spend 22 points to upgrade him to twin LC & have to force him to challenge (& thereby forcing all attacks to be allocated with precision.....). Further, mutations are either bought at a premium or are "earned" and should be factored into the cost of the model. Survivability doesn't really matter for a terminator champion because his profile is identical to the guy standing next to him - as such his "survivability" doesn't mean anything (unless its turn 7 and your champion is the ONLY model currently contesting an objective & you just ate an AP2 shot you need to pass off to keep yourself contesting).
There is no legitimate reason the chaos terminator champion should have to pay more for the same gear. I believe he is the only model in the chaos book that this is a big deal for - him & the noise champion who can't take a sonic blaster.....

It was your choice to take away some precision shots
Not every unit has a champion, and youre assuming every challengee will accept
There are plenty of legitimate reasons when you dont make arguments that ignore reality.

The advantages are there. Take them or leave them. If you can't see them, maybe try Chess instead.
Either way, that's the price that must be paid, complaining wont change that.
