In the United States, that falls under the Fair Use doctrine, and is legal here. Very few other countries have similar judicial precedent or laws.
As such, the reason why GW seems so draconian about its copyright enforcement has much, much more to do with European laws than American ones, and it's easier to enforce things uniformly than to break things apart country by country.

60mm wrote:It is not illegal, in the US atleast, to own a digital copy of a physical book you already own. You can scan your books into pdf's all you wish to. And torrenting itself isn't illegal, so if you were to download a Codex that you already own that is perfectly legal as well. Pirating is illegal because people use it to acquire products without paying the producer of the product. Using torrents to share files is not pirating in and of itself. If I were to write a book and share it freely via torrent, for example, no laws are being violated. Which is why torrents aren't illegal, torrent isn't specifically for illegal activity although it does happen. Just like illegal activity happens with knives but they aren't illegal.
Thanks for the tidbits. Owning the codexes and getting them out of my car are 2 entirely different things. Or when I leave them places ... for example you wouldn't believe how many times I had to jump my car this year because not only did I leave my lights on, but I locked my keys in my car. Seriously though over 2 dozen. Why I bought a spare key, only to have the magnetic hide a key be not so magnetic.

Ill be honest, I will download a pdf to browse a codex beforehand. But if I like it I will go out and buy it. As the owner of a $70 rulebook and 3 $30 codecies Im not feeling guilty at all. But that is as far as I go and I dump a ton of money on GW as it is.

I'll admit that I've downloaded my fair share of TV shows and movies. I've even downloaded codex's and things but I always purchase a physical copy sooner or later.
The way I look at it, I'm helping to keep my local gaming store open. The owner is awesome and he often has 25% off sales and prizes for tournaments. He will even open up board games to try with people if they haven't been selling.
GW prices are pretty outrageous but you could always play Death Skullz Orks and just convert everything from household items!

How is downloading codices, claiming free prizes, only buying items on sale and making armies from household items helping keep your FLGS open? You going in and playing doesn't do that. You buying your stuff off him does.

Well Greenizbest did say he eventually buys the Codices and he didn't say that he only buys stuff on big sales, he was using that to say why he chooses to support his FLGS. He also didn't say he makes his armies from household items.

Actually I have a few Acrylic paints from Hobby Lobby, and they work really well.
And at $2.99 for 120 ML it is a great deal, that is all the black I will probably ever need for my models.

you can work with anything but why bother. good paint saves tons of time just like a good brush does. save yourself the frustration and get good paint. GW paint is actually awesome. iv tried lots of game colour and reaper. overall GW wins. just ordered some model air, looking forward to trying it out.
the only thing i recommend going cheap on is primer. walmart/krylon primer does the trick.

This too. I still buy bitz from bitz sites, but when I buy whole kits, on the rare occasion that I do, I buy it from my FLGS. I have to pay full retail GW prices, but having a place to play is for me more important than saving 10% by buying things online.

Downloading isn't stealing per say.
In one case the poor guy has a empty parking space, and your man a new ferrari.
In the other the rich guy keeps his ferrari, and the other gets to drive a replica.
See what i mean ? It's making an illegal copy, two very different things !
I understand the whole pdf thing, like Peregrine said. But its 50$ for a reason. Its a hardback, full colour 104 page rulebook, with tons of artwork along with some decent stories to read. And by buying the product you support the artist and his work, or in this case the artists and there work.
Edit : And it has the GW trademark, which despite how much a love my hobby still means that they slap on the plastic crack tax.

It isn't stealing at all. Theft requires transfer of ownership. If I steal your bike, then I have your bike, and you have to walk to work. That's why stealing is a crime - because it reduces your standard of living.
If I make a copy of your bike, then you are in no way injured, as you still have your bike. Without any damage done, there is no crime.
And that's why the US has the concept of fair use in copyright law. Unless you can substantiate your claim that you have actually been harmed in some way, then a judge will just laugh you out of his courtroom.
