This is the primaris power for the telepathy discipline. I just realised how brutal this could be. It causes 3D6 minus the leadership of the unit, averaging 21 minus 9 (for marines) means the whole squad is gone in one shot because no armor or cover can be taken against it. Am I missing something or is this OP as. The only hard thing would be to get your librarian in range (12"). Has anyone had any success with this power?

Err, what? How are you averaging 21 on a 3D6 roll that has a maximum of 18?

Forget what I said about the averaging 21 BS. Im too tired to be posting about numbers on Dakka lol. Even so it can still cause a large amount of damage.

You're missing something. 3D6 avg is 10.5/11 IIRC -9 =1.5-2

Not so much. The average is 10.5, so 1.5 Marines dead. That means that in a 100% average game, you would kill 10.5 Marines.

Woo. 11 Marines over 7 turns. My Leman Russ is shaking in its track-guards.

Less, actually. Don't forget that you have to roll to hit, and then roll DTW. Even assuming you have BS 5 on the psyker and your target just has the basic DTW you're down to 1.04 dead marines. So yeah, I think I'll just take a Leman Russ with the Executioner discipline and cast Plasma Blast every turn.

Less, actually. Don't forget that you have to roll to hit, and then roll DTW. Even assuming you have BS 5 on the psyker and your target just has the basic DTW you're down to 1.04 dead marines. In theory it'd be really good with a PBS casting "Weaken resolve" for a 1-2 combo: weaken then shriek.
However, I've yet to see it being pulled of effectively and consistently...

It works okay if you are running a "Psychic Choir" list and gets pretty good if you can get it to reroll to hit. 'nid lists have fun with it.

I know the whole rules with allys thing might get in the way but...and bare with me here. Couldnt you lower the leadership of a squad with Tau marker lights then use your *insert physic ally* to totally burn down a squad. Lets say you got 11 on 3d6, and was rolling with 3 tetras with bs4 (4 marker light shots each) and hit with 8 lights. You could lower marines to I1...could do some serious damage.

No. Even ignoring the fact that markerlights can only be used by Tau units it doesn't work. The LD reduction only applies to pinning tests taken against the using squad's shooting that turn, it would do absolutely nothing to help with psychic shriek.

Im pretty sure its not just for pinning as you can also force lower leadership tests from shooting casualties via markerlight. And the markerlight isnt actually affecting the allied unit, the affect is on the enemy (which states it lowers their leadership untill the end of the phase)

That could be pseudo effective.

Not quite true.

Whilst 10.5 is the average on the dice rolling. The casualties do not follow the same bell curve.

If you roll leadership or less you do not inflict negative casualties, therefore your casualties look like:

0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

e.g. you have a 1/36 chance of 9 and a 1/36 chance of zero, that averages 4.5. It would only average 1.5 if the lower roll resulted in -6 casualties.

Ignoring hit chance, DTW etc:
Against ld 8 you average 2.82 per shriek, not 2.5
Against ld 9 you average 2.08 per shriek, not 1.5.
Against ld 10 you average 1.45 per shriek, not 0.5.

I have done it, and it really is funny.

However, telepathy also has the ability to shut down one unit a turn through weaken resolve/ dominate, which I have found to be the much better combo.

The problem with the "combo" is that by the time you're done with all the psychic tests, DTW and to-hit roll you've got an extremely high chance of failure. You're much better off just spending those points on more guns and killing the enemy instead of screwing around with psychic abilities.

Still doesn't change my opinion of the PBS. I do love that unit.
