I always see GK as Grey + Red + Blueish tint/blue. I'm thinking of painting mine up without red anywhere. (Grey/Meltallic/Blues) No red even on their vehicles. I was wondering why red is included in their scheme. Is that just the way they are or is there some background significance to it. Does anyone know?

It's because someone in GW thinks it looks good.

I prefer them without it, myself. Grey and black is good enough.

Oh ok cool. Didn't know if it was "their thing" like BA is almost always red etc. etc.

Eh, most people who don't like the color scheme but do like the army get around it somehow anyway. Hell, there's chaos grey knight armies out there and they are directly defying the canon, as it were.

The red is either there to symbolize blood or as an artifact of their old connection to the Inquisition, which is traditionally dark red and black. You don't have to paint your army any particular way, that's merely the studio's interpretation; my Grey Knights are Dark Angels Green and silver with a few blue highlights (they were created during my teenage individualism above all phase and I've had more fun coming up with a convoluted fluff explanation for it than I would have repainting them).

Think of it like that old piece of fluff (don't think it's even canon anymore... WARD!!), where they requisitioned terminator armour from a bunch of other chapters for an operation when they were still fairly new and just being put together, and without enough equipment of their own yet.

Or hell, maybe they painted it a different color as part of a ritual to deal with a specific event, but never changed it back.

I mean hell they did it with the blood of Sisters (Who were apparently more pure than Grey Knights were), you'd think they might sometimes do it with other things.

Same question like why are Ultramarines Blue, White and Gold and Black Templars are Black and White?

Because the original creators made them that way and that's how they are.

I'm just going to say there's someone on dakka that painted his GK's entirely red...

And there's me, who painted them green. Mostly because I had a lot of extra Dark Angels Green lying around while I was converting my C:SM army to Dark Angels.

We should find that other guy and have a red Grey Knights versus green Grey Knights battle and see which color is superior.

Why do most people paint them silver, including the official paint schemes, when they should obviously be painted grey?
Because grey looks boring.
Space Wolves get away with it because they're covered in assorted junk like skins and runes.
Red gives them some contrasting colour.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

The Inquisiton's main colors are red and white. Hence why Red is often on GKs.

The only red my GKs have is in their heraldry and purity seals. Otherwise its silver for armor and blue for eye lenses.

Red does make a nice detal color on a mostly silver paint scheme.
