Just a quick question here. How does Obama's response time to this disaster, ie. Getting to the scene in person compare to things like the gulf oil spill and other similar disaters that happened when the election was far far away?

About the only response times this is worth comparing to would be Katrina and 9/11.

Why would you need a president at a disaster? What's he going to do, run the country at it?

It's usually less about what time he went "hi guys, I'm here!"(although it is symbolic) and more about how fast assets were activated and mobilized.

Ah, OK, that makes a lot more sense to me!

But to be sure, the "president at the scene looking sad and determined with his jacket on or sleeves rolled up while promising that we will become better because of this" picture is mandatory at some point...

Stuff like that always makes me itchy. I can't shake the 'this will look good for them' thought, which just makes it feel like they're profiting from others misery. I know that there's a good chance that most leaders are genuinely affected by disasters and are trying to rally a country's spirits, but that thought is always at the back of my mind.

Considering some areas were declared disaster areas prior to landfall os Sandy, and Governor's requests for aid were granted prior to landfall; it was PDQ.

Of course, this is only what I have heard. I could be misinformed about the response time.

Which depends a great deal on who you ask. I'm actually sure that assistance was mobilized in a way that can only be described as "commendable." But if you ask some people, they are going to die. (From 0:00- 0:45.)

Which is frankly ridiculous.

Possibly, but in general it shows that leaders are out there doing something, which is important for people who are displaced and disadvantaged by an emergency. It's one of those things which is political theatre, but also somewhat necessary.

Meanwhile, Romney's been hold Storm Relief rallies which are completely staged events where 'donations' are pre-bought, handed to attendees so they can present them to Romney (http://m.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2012/10/5000-shopping-run-walmart-turned-romneys-campaign-stop-relief-event/58529/) , the supplies are only going to swing states like Ohio, Virginia and New Hampshire, not to New Jersy or New York which were hardest hit, and the Red Cross, who the supplies were going to, has made it clear that they don't need small scale supplies of tinned goods and items (which take up lots of resources to sort, clean and transport), but money and blood would help the most. Now THAT is how you do political theatre.

I don't know why everyone criticise any President when natural disaster strikes...

It's the local state's responsibility... not the Federal government.

Federal government (FEMA, military) assist, but the states have to ask for help.

We had a massive tornado that basically wiped out downtown, Joplin MO recently...

Obama was dinged 'cuz it took him 2 weeks (or so) before "going there" to see the aftermath. That's silly... (just like it's silly to ding Bush for Katrina).

President's don't need the photo op to go visit the sites... they should just empower the right people to get the help that the locals need.

First of all, anyone who uses the red cross as the barometer is severely misinformed. The Red Cross is a perfect example of bloated bureaucracy and government corruption. They are a FOR PROFIT money grubbing corporation.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good people that volunteer and do good work, but you start looking above their ground level workers and it gets disgusting real fast.

Funny also how Romney has now suddenly gone mute concerning his rabid desire to gut FEMA and proclaim Climate change a myth( depite being asked repeatedly to reaffirm his position on these two issues in recent days).

Since no one else corrected you, I'd like to point out that the above is also not true. Obama was there a week later, not "2 weeks or so".

But I agree with the sentiment. Bush was right when he didn't visit New Orleans right away, but communicated his rationale poorly.

You can't compare Sandy to Katrina though. Sandy was nothing compaired to Katrina. I don't think many people truly understand the sheer devestation that was brought about by Katrina.

Ha, Michael "Heck of a Job, Brownie" Brown, the failed manager of FEMA from Katrina, is now on record as saying Obama "Reacted too quickly" to Hurricane Sandy! Seriously, you couldn't even satire this stuff anymore, it's a satire of itself.

Well, if anyone could claim to be an expert in a botched emergency response...

It might be shorter to list the ways in which it wasn't botched.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

To be fair, you can also blame Bush Sr. for siring and raising Bush Jr. to be such a good deficit increaser.

Nature vs nurture and all that good stuff.
