The year is 42,000 and the Emperors light has gone from the galaxy....
(Disclaimer) after numerous end of days threads and this or that will all die, I thought in could be fun to do a bit of creative (group) brainstorming, this thread is not meant as a "this group will just wipe out such and such" but more of a scenario into which we can do some creative thinking.
SETUP:year 42k and after a long slide into darkness, the golden throne has finally failed and the astronomicon has gone out, terra has become engulfed in a apocaliptic chaos incursion that has drained the warmachine of the imperium for almost 400 years of conflict, only the flaring of ancient (Necron ? ) structures deep within mars has prevented another Eye of terror erupting in the Sol system.
Space travel has been forced to adapt to the gradual dimming and final darkness of the Astronomicon and a new breed of navigators has risen to the challenges ( rare in the extreme, but capable of deeper incursions within the warp than conventional navigators, these individuals have become vital stratigic assets to humanity.
chaos has erupted across the galaxy, but not in the all consuming wave that was foretold, worlds have fallen to cults and deamonic worship, but others have resisted, mankind has splintered into many groups, that are scrambling for survival, as the supply structure and tithe systems of the imperium collapses, systems and sectors fend for themselves.
The cataclysmic war for terra has consumed entire chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, and drawn the bulk of the Traitor chapters to holy Terra, Abbadon himself has lead this last crusade and will not relent, fleets and armies have been broken withing the Sol system, and a victor is not even forseen.
The loss of the Astronmicon has had one benificial side effect..the Tyranids having been drawn to it since their incursion within our galaxy have now split into countless smaller fleets and tendrils, with a more broad scope to their advance.
Necron tombworlds and ruins across the galaxy have become more active, and ancient relics have once again become active, stemming the flow of warpstorms, but in no way stopping all of the pandimonium.
( Alright, within this framework and setting what would be some of the powergroups that would develop, with army or political descriptions. (keeping in mind there is no overarching empire anymore, humans are having to adapt), and the battle for survival has become a much more personal one. )
Lets have some fun with this.

Safe for the Alpha Legion. who's task is complete.
With a 'for the Emperor', they kill thje Cabal, and start killing tyranids untill the tyranids manage to evolve that awesome that all tyranids call themselves Alpharius.
Including the Aplhafex.

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It is Alpharius.
The Emperor is long dead, and thrown on the wall of martyrs.

A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

Wow, you guys are trying very hard ..if you dont have anthing to contribute to a fictional discussion about a fictional setting, then dont, and all scenarios are plausible since there is no Canon.

I didn't say anything against the scenario...to be more specific, I think this belongs in Dakka Fiction rather than in 40k Background.

I didn't say anything against the scenario...to be more specific, I think this belongs in Dakka Fiction rather than in 40k Background.
If you read very carefully its a scenario setup and not a work of fiction, I was calling for ideas about groups that would develop within the above mentioned conditions, what former imperial power groups would be doing and how they would organize their efforts, in a even grimer desperate time.
I.E. as one of my gaming buddies supposed on a Macragge (spelling) commonwealth or some such centered around the ultras, and their allies, Eldar linking up with exodites, ork empires and such.
Just a freaking exercise in imagination.
@ Brother captain alexander...as in the scenario setup, chaos is not doing that, its a alternate take on it so the game continues, again, if you dont have anything other than the standard "Chaos eats everything" then move along your point taken, otherwise you are belaboring the point.

More like unmentioned... GW never actually said that they don't exist anymore. Heck, the Squats weren't mentioned for a few editions but now appear in the Abhuman section of the 6th Edition Rulebook.
