I know that. But I also know (from an obscure source that eludes my conscious memory) that even with Spirit Stones, staying in the Webway for an extended period of time subjects Craftworld Eldar to the same problem as the Dark Eldar have.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

Because the Webway is still partly in the Warp. Slaanesh may not be able to outright rip an Eldar's soul out of his body in the Webway, but she can drain/leach it away slowly.

Because Slaanesh is in the Warp, that's why.

This is because Warp Spiders travel through the Warp proper, not just the Webway. Hence why they're called Warp Spiders, and not Webway Spiders.

I know - they teleport. An insane risk, as despite their Spirit Stones and heavily-warded suits of Aspect Armor, even the briefest instant in the Warp is insanely dangerous for an Eldar, even more so than for a Human psyker (the most powerful Librarians have no fear driving themselves out of time and space for an instant only to reappear right next to an opponent).

It is the otherway around. DEldar codex explicitly says Dark Eldar can't remain too long on real space because ther souls get sucked a lot faster there than in the webway.

Look, all I know is that somewhere (though I'm starting to suspect a Goto novel, maybe one of the DoW series novels), I've read that Craftworld Eldar can't stay too long in the Webway.

That would be a matter of opinion, like how most people feel about Ward's work, or how I feel about ADB and his work.

The writers for the DE codex are explicit when they say that souls drain significantly faster in real space than in the Webway and actually go into a lot of depth on why that is. It's actually in the video in the stickied, The Fluff FAQ/Helpful Links Sticky, thread for this forum.

Sorry Tadashi. Slaanesh cannot suck even a single iota of an Eldar's soul if that eldar has a soulstone and is not in the warp proper. The reason it is dangerous for Warp Spiders isn't because some daemon immediately ate them, it's because they got lost in the warp and are now wandering it aimlessly and eventually will either die of thirst, starvation, or get noticed by a daemon who can now attack said eldar, kill him, pluck the soulstone from the armour, and consume it.

That's the only way Slaanesh can get Eldar souls at all, ever. He must destroy the soul stone, wether that is through consumption, smashing it so it can no longer hold the soul, or whatever.

Dark Eldar are a whole other matter.

When Slaanesh was born, every single eldar in existence felt her/he/it's claws in their soul. Eldar escape it by creating and using Soul Stones, Harlequins by practicing whatever esoteric knowledge Cegorach has taught them, and Exodites use the worlds where they live as a giant soul stone. ...but Dark Eldar...they learned long ago that they could have Slaanesh eat other souls in place of their own...for a time anyway...but eventually all of the Dark Eldar will die and be consumed because they do not have a real way to stop slaanesh.

It is said that fate will spare any brave warrior who calls upon Khorne's name and pledges his soul to the blood god. Then why bother with Perils of the Warp in the first place, if the Spirit Stone can protect their soul that effectively?

You are mis understanding Perils of the Warp. What happens with Perils of the Warp is this. In an unprotected psychic mind, the Daemons can become physical and be brought into the realm of reality. The in game effect of Perils of the Warp represents this in game. Basically a hole is opened into the warp and some warp creature attacks.

The reason it is dangerous to the Eldar is the same as it would be for entering the warp unprotected. The Warp Entity attacks, kills the farseer, plucks the soul stone, and eats it.

It isn't mind bullets and then steal your soul, it's open a warp hole, reach through, slay whatever is on the other side, and if it is an Eldar, pluck the stone.

Sounds nasty.

Which in turn begs the following question: with the galaxy being as dangerous as it is, why don't the Craftworlds just stay within the safety of the Webway?

The webway isn't that safe. There are many very dangrous things that have entered the webway since the Fall of the Eldar. Many nasty warp spawned beasts make their homes in portions of it. The Eldar go around constantly trying to repair portions of the Webway and sealing off doorways into reality or the warp so that Eldar don't inadverdently open a doorway and step into the Warp or a Black Hole, or worse, into one of the lairs of one of the Warp spawned entities that have taken up residence. Then let's not forget that it is also inhabited by the Dark Eldar and the Necrons.

Also, the Craftworlds have grown too large to enter all but the most massive doorways into the Webway. And there aren't a whole lot of those. They are spread pretty far apart. And even though Craftworlds are warp capable, they would rather not take that route to travel, even if their lives depended on it because of how dangerous it would be to their immortal souls.

I thought as long they don't die (and Slaanesh or her servants don't get their hands on their Spirit Stones), they're safe? BTW, do the Eldar know about the incomplete, Human-built sections of the Webway?

They are safe..from the Daemons entering their minds...but the Warp Daemons are formed from the thoughts of whoever is travelling through it. And while the Eldar may be mentally safe, they experience things hundreds of times more intense than any human. So their minds in the warp are like a shining beacon, attracting all manner of warp entities. And that is just one Eldar. Imagine an entire craftworld full of them travelling in the Warp. Millions of Eldar creating billions of daemons that seek to become physical, enter the Craftworld, and tear every living thing apart that is inside. If even one Eldar mind is too weak, they could let in an unstoppable flood of daemons that would consume the entire craftworld after killing off all of the inhabitants.

They would physically slay every eldar, then pluck all the stones, go into the Dome of Crystal Seers and every other part of the ship, pluck all of those stones too, and eat every single eldar's soul on the ship.

Way too dangrous to even take the chance.

Yeah, the Eldar know about it but since they don't control the entire webway, what can they do about it? not much.

Point taken.

Yeah, the Eldar know about it but since they don't control the entire webway, what can they do about it? not much.

Assuming it were completed, would they do something? It wouldn't be very 'healthy' for them to have Custodians and Thousand Sons (assuming they remain loyal) exploring its corridors, or even fighting pitched battles with Dark Eldar/Harlequins/monsters and so on...

For the most part the webway will kill the unwary. And since humans tried to build their own sections of the webway, I'm sure both the Eldar and the Dark Eldar would try to lure creatures towards it, from psychnuinen to unknown things that are impossible to understand. They might even try to re-direct the Necrons to the newer human built section.

If it came to the point where humans were just running around using the webway for their own ends and trying to kill off all of the eldar at the same time I am sure they would come up with something to ruin the humans day. Wether that is by destroying the human portion of the webway, sealing it off, or sending in the guardians of the Black Library, the most fearsome things in the webway.

Yes they go through the warp, but that isn't why warp spiders are called warp spiders. Warp Spiders are named after the spider like beings that drift through the infinity circuit of a craftworld protecting the souls from being attacked by intruders.

Magnus exterminated the psychnueun on Prospero - the Thousand Sons would have no difficulty dealing with them. And newcrons? Seriously? They're a joke, at least compared to the Great Crusade-era Imperium.

Attempting to destroy the Human-built sections would probably be suicidal, seeing as they're maintained by the psychic power of either Magnus or the Emperor. And sending the guardians of the Black Library would be meaningless, as the Emperor would just send his Sisters of Silence to kill their psychic powers, rendering them easy prey for the Custodians or non-psychic Thousand Sons.

So you just wanted me to tell you what they might do so you could say "nope..no matter what the Eldar do the Imperium is more powerful so they have nothing to worry about"...was that your intention?

No thanks. I'm not interested in another meaningless power struggle on the internet. In truth, whoever would win that fight would totally depend on how GW wants it to end.

Personally, after reading numerous Horus Heresy novels and coming to realize that I like other fiction better, I'll take a pass on the game fluff these days. It's just getting too over the top.

"Khorne is a noble warrior who respects strength and bravery, who takes no joy in destroying the weak, and considers the helpless unworthy of his wrath. It is said that fate will spare any brave warrior who calls upon Khorne's name and pledges his soul to the blood god. It is also said that Khorne's daemons will hunt down and destroy any warrior who betrays his honour by killing a helpless innocent or murdering in cold blood..."

No, I was just pointing that if the Imperial Webway was completed, the Eldar simply sending a few specialists wouldn't work. Not against the legions...there would be full-scale war in the Webway, that much is certain, but who would win would be up in the air.
