Hi there, I have seen Malifaux advertised quite a bit and I see that the mini's look awesome but I wanted to ask you guys if any of you have actually played it? Is it any good and do the mini's live up to expectation?
Also, I was interested in the Terraclip scenery too. Can this double up for use in WH40K games or is it too small and only useful for games like Malifaux and Necromunda?

It is a fantastic game and well worth trying
I don't understand what you mean by the mini's living up to expectation, mine would moreso if I could paint better.
Don't know about terraclip scenery.

The game's fun with a bunch of different ways to win each time.
As far as terra clips go- you could make a pretty cool table if you had a bunch of kits. If you just wanted some buildings then you should just buy the building box.

The metal mini's look good and are well cast... can't comment on the new plastics as I've not seen any in person
(although some of the metals are bit of a PITA assemble)
I don't play though

As unofficial forum stalker for the Malifaux section, I feel as though I must point this out
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/80.page
As to Malifaux, the metal models are fiddly, and the sculpts are good. Many of the original ones are very static, but that's okay.
The plastics are identical to the plastic that GW plastics are made of, and the detail is amazing. I own the new Neverborn models, and it's crazy how detailed these guys got. The new Neverborn Master Jakob Lynch has a spirit with a deck of falling cards, you can see four of these cards sculpted clear as day (as they're the only 4 to have fallen).
Terraclips are vastly improved with the three new sets, the details are crazy good, the quality of the pieces are good, and they're able to do so much more.
But yes, if you want just buildings, buy the Buildings of Malifaux. if you want everything... well then I suggest Dungeon Essentials, and the Caverns of Ruin, and possibly a second Cavern of Ruin just to make sure....

Thanks for the help guys, may just bite the bullet and invest in some then! The Neverborn do look cool, I particularly like the look of the Resurrectionists and the Outcasts though myself. I can start with one scenery set and then see how it goes I guess, then add more if I like it.
Thanks again :-)
AAnd thanks for the thread link (which I probably should have searched for before starting another one!). It was a big help.

I've yet to play a game (I'm almost done painting up my first starter box though, so soon) but considering how cheap a starter is (and the fact that you *need* absolutely nothing else to play) give it a go. The models are a delight to paint up as well. I can get a respectable table top standard done on a model in around 2 hours, easy peasy. And you aren't running 50 models where 2 hours a model means you'll play the game some time in 2014.

The best part is that many of the starter boxes are "perfect" sizes for 25 soulstone games, which is just below the "average" size game of 35 soulstones

Haven't played the game but have generally heard positive things about it. Certainly, the card-playing mechanic sounds very interesting.
Some of the sculpts are absolutely stupendous however.

Agreed, I wanted to get the models anyway even if they didn't belong to a game!! They are very pretty.
Saying that, GW seem to have upped the ante lately with thier new mini's, some of those are looking amazing too.

It's a fun game and the card system is a refreshing change from throwing dice around. Most of the models are outstanding as well.

The game is great. It's rather quick to play a Match and there's a level of strategy involved with knowing when to play which cards that is not included in a dice game.
The terraclips themselves are definitely a good investment. I bought 4 boxes myself and have been able to make a 3x3 size table and customize it pretty much any way I want.
2 Boxes will net you a 3x3 table fine however and is a good way to start. A single box might be stretching it a little too thin.

2 boxes will not net you a 3x3 table fine...
I currently have 2 boxes of the new sets, and I'm struggling to make a 3x3 board....
You need at least 3 sets to get near enough 6 inch base pieces for a 3x3 board...

The game is a great system. The biggest difference from Malifaux compared to GW stuff is the price of getting started. You can start Malifaux on a competitive level for $70.00 (usd). That is a starter box, card deck, and rule book.
Also, in this game you are involved in the defense part of the game. Not watching the other guy throw dice and you hoping for a bunch of ones. Automatically Appended Next Post: As far as the terra clips boards. They make it way to easy to cheat. Each square on the board is an inch, so, range is easy to figure out.

This is the very much the case, the only thing that I should warn you is that if you go to any Wyrd sponsored tournaments (usually held at GenCon and the like), they use vinyl mats as the basis for their tournament tables, and The mats are a 3x3 play area that mimics the terraclips designs, but the squares on the mats are less than 1 inch to prevent counting the squares.
The hard part is trying to demo for a 10 year old at GenCon, trying to get him to use the tape measure and having him just count out the squares. Never seen a kid stomp his parent so badly before.

Sadly, that still allows people to cheat. It only takes your first move to lay down your tape measure and get a measurement of the squares they use (even at less than 1") and be able to get a solid idea how far apart you are beyond that point. :(

The minis look well made, but I can't find anything interesting for me as a gamer. My hobby time is full with D&D and Warhammer 40k, and my gaming group isn't about to pick up another game.

Granted, this might be because they're better at judging distances, but it wasn't a deal. kronk wrote:The minis look well made, but I can't find anything interesting for me as a gamer. Each to their own I guess :-)
I play WH40K and Bloodbowl, but they usually take a couple of hours to play (and thats not including setting up!) and sometimes a quick game is whats needed, I have heard you can get a game done fairly quickly with Malifaux.
I did use to play Yu Gi Oh quite a bit and the card battling side of the game does appeal somewhat.

I played a demo game using another guys warband, and it was a lot of fun. As a skirmish game, it seems easier together into than, say, 40k, though unfortunately my regular gaming group hasn't expressed any interest in it.

Maybe just need to show them it. It has a nice variety of themes between each crew anyway. The system can be tricky to pick up at first, but runs fairly smoothly. As for static one piece models; I like my Onryo.

Malifaux is a decent way to get a "quick" game in, though unless you're great with the rules, and know what you're doing, I would suggest putting aside 90 minutes or so, even stretching up to 2 hours for newer players. As the stat cards don't always say what the ability does, like Hard to Wound, Slow to Die, and Hard to Kill each do separate things, but none of them are on the cards, because they're considered a Common Ability. Much like not_u said, look up the different masters online through Pullmyfinger (the tactics wiki for Malifaux), Wyrd's Website, or even perhaps from this post: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/474150.page#4741778 Which has a brief overview of the masters, and a bit of their flavor/fluff. I mean there is literally something for everyone., and who doesn't like the idea of evil care bears?
