Hi, I am a pretty experince 40k player but now I feel its time to move to fantasy and I would like to ask the age old question of what are the tiers for all the armies.
I have looked around the fourm and learned that skaven, lizards are currently the best. Am I totally wrong or I am on the right idea?
Could someone give me a tier list for the armies and separate them into TOP, MIDDLE, BOTTOM.
Also I would like to know what chaos drawfs fit in because in my local area forgeworld is allowed.
Thanks in advance

Greetings.
Skaven and Lizzard men are definitvly amongst some of the more potent armies, but the thing about Fantasy is that all armies are somewhat balanced. Although some requier a lot more work to win with than others. As for the sorting of armies to your spessificts I can not help you really since well I don`t see it as particulary guiding for choosing an army unless you want a army that is more or less guaranted to do good in any battle.
Chaos Dwarfs are a good army, they do have solid infanteri and hordes of expendebal fodder units that can work very well in the hands of a skilled player, their warmachines are suffering froma bit of short range. But their magic and abilities are very good. As for building an army I would recomend you to get the Throne Of Thamurkan to read more about them. I will see if I can not dig up the list I used last time I fielded them, if I do find it I will get back to you soon.

Opinions vary greatly based on bias or local meta, as well as comp. Fantasy is also far more balanced than 40k, so top tier vs bottom tier generally won't be an almost imposible task as is the case in some 40k match ups.
Top:
Ogres
Skaven
Lizardmen
Dark Elves
Daemons
Warriors of Chaos
Middle:
High Elves
Vampire Counts
Dwarfs
Orcs & Goblins
Empire
Bottom:
Wood Elves
Beastmen
Tomb Kings
Bretonnia

this seems to be pretty accurate from all the other tiers stuff i looked at. I do plan to build a chaos drwaf army, not sure where they will come in on that list?

Can we not bring this garbage to the fantasy forums please? Fantasy is about 5 thousand times more balanced than 40k, please play the army you like.

While harshly said, Hargus is pretty much spot on here. While that tier list is close, the difference between it and a 40k tier list is that a bottom tier army, played well can win against any other army.
Stop worrying about tier, worry about what you're going to enjoy playing.

I was harsh. Seeing as 80% of the gaming at my local GW is 40k and no independent stores within 50 miles of me has any kind of fantasy player base I was looking at getting back into 40k and just the whining and bitching from people about tiers on the forums and in the store has really turned me off. Lets face it people who play 40k exclusively are mouth breathing morons that oogle over space marines, the whole system is based on picking the right army, building the right list and target prioritization, 10% of it is actual tactics. Grow a brain and play some fantasy.
I'll amend my post to say I do understand if time and money is a factor, I question my buying of armies to get into a game maybe 20% of my gaming store is actively in to. It's why I have not made the leap to LotR.

If there are tiers, there is very small distance between them. You can easily take a top tier army and make it garbage or a bottom tier army and outmaneuver a top tier. Or just get decently lucky on dice.
I really like the 40K fluff. And I think from the zillions of posts about game theory I've made here, I really like discussing and contemplating strategy. I couldn't get into 40K because it's simply horribly balanced.

The un-balanced ways of 40k are what made me leave it a while back, I used to play as Wood Elves and Tomb Kings, and I regulary beat people who used Lizardmen, Vampires and Chaos. Now I play Bretonnians and hope to do the same again! (And I am tempted to run a Beastmen army so I can make it work, I'm very much an underdog player.)

If you are looking for a good army to start with I will tell you what I tell everyone else. Start with lizard men. They are capable of playing every army archetype. They can be horde with skink/kroxigor, skirmishers/ranged with skink/chameleon skink. They can be a durable cc army with Saurus, they can be a powerhouse magic army with slann/skink priest spam. They are forgiving as a whole and with the correct lore *cough life cough* they can be very very competitive.

I am thinking of a chaos dwarf army and made a list for it. Thats done and settled but now I want to also make another list just incase someone will not play against me, easiest way is dwarfs since they are both gunline armies, I like gunline actully, it is easy to learn for me atleast.
So what do you guys think the typical dwarf list is? 2 blocks of GW dwarfs 1 block of hammernators lots of big guns and some rune priest for the magic? Is that still the typical build or has thunderers become popular and replaced the blocks of GW dwarfs?
Also what other army is gunline based or can be gunline based?

The other armies that can do gunline or shooting well are Empire, TK, Ogres, Skaven, and Orcs and Goblins. Elves of all kinds can lots of shooting but do lack war machines outside of bolt throwers. I'm not a big fan of BS shooting as Fantasy there are a lot of modifiers to your "to hit" rolls when rolling to shoot, it's not like 40k where if your BS is 4 you area always hitting on 3s, it can vary based on some 6-8 factors. In Fantasy you will also find we have a 2nd shooting phase called Magic which can bring a very effective ranged damage and other spells that are fun.

Empire is top tier in my experience, I've only lost 10 times (out of 11 years of playing). and My Lizardmen aren't bad either, a large army of quick skinks, lore of heavens priests, and tough 2 attack saurus do pretty well too. the only massive losses I've had have been against High Elf longbows, because they can out-range handgunners and make mince-meat out of knights. Empire Pistoliers have been my ace in the hole forever, the armour has saved them plenty of times and the fast cavalry pistol attacks have earned their keep time and time again.

High Elves with Teclis easily belong to the Tier 1.

Yes, but thats only because of Teclis's abilities. The army he's riding in is just there to protect him while he destroys things.
Without Teclis, HEs would be solidly low middle tier.
