I just got the tyranid battleforce and it cane with a pair of giant scything talons, do they do anything special or just look cool

They dont do anything special. Most people use them to distinguish the prime. Or you can save them for larger creatures like the trygon or carnifex.
Personally I use flesh hooks to make my prime stand out.

They're a leftover from 3rd edition. They come on the Tyranid Warrior heavy weapon sprue with the venom cannon and barbed strangler, and were your source of scything talons for monstrous creatures back then (that sprue came with Hive Tyrants and Carnifexes back then as they used the same sized heavy weapons then). The sprue was in the Warrior box as well (which is why it's in the battleforce) as the squads srouce of heavy weapons.

When Carnifexes and hive Tyrants got redesigned in 4th edition, they didn't redesign that sprue and just left it in the Warrior box, so you stil get the super huge scything talons with Tyranid Warriors.

Basically, they're old style monstrous scything talons, and left in because it's cheaper to leave them on the sprue than recut it without them.

I cut the monstrous scything talons at the wrist and turned them upside down to make boneswords for my prime. They look ridiculous but kinda cool too.

No they're not. They're meant for the old 3rd edition Hive Tyrant and Carnifex. That sprue, which also includes the venom cannon, barbed strangler and rending claws, was made as a generic heavy weapon sprue and includes in the Warrior, Hive Tyrant and Carnifex boxes. The Rending Claws, Venom Cannon and Barbed Strangler were made to be used with all of them, the Scything talons were made for the Hive Tyrant and Carnifex. The reason they're still included in the Warrior kit is simply because it's cheaper to keep making that sprue than recut it without those scything talons, and the rest of the sprue is needed for the Warrior kit.
