Very sad day when pieces of flimsy cardboard are worth more than a mans life.
Not to discount the tragedy, but people are killed every day for what in another world we might call garbage.
An example of such would be carbon-bearing materials put under high pressure and tempatures over thousands of years.

I may sound like a dick here but we have no control over the blood diamond killings, we do over these, it's a mess-up in our system that allowed him to die.
also it's always more tragic when it's in your country cos it could then happen to you. It's highly unlikely I'll die over the blood diamonds but someone could kill me over my thousands of pounds of war hammer and trading cards.

Well, somebody has to bring religion in...so I'll do it!! I grew up with a guy who got my group into Magic, and we had a 4th edition starter game for his birthday (I already played, due to my uncle, but everyone else was new). The next month was my birthday, and I did the same, getting a HUGE amount of cards for my birthday, and passing them out to all the friends who came. One guy got an awesome deck, full of land destruction and control-your opponent could do things, but he'd suffer for every action. He brought it home, and his overly-religious parents immediately confiscated it, saying it was the Devil's game, and he wasn't permitted to play. I was also not allowed to have the cards back-they destroyed them. Freaking Baptists, man....

All sorts of things are worth money. Some people appear to sneer at the value some magic cards get, but there are baseball and cigarette cards that are worth the same and you can't even play a game with those. There are comic books worth more than a Black Lotus, even worth many times more than this murdered man's entire MtG collection.
Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them, it doesn't matter what they are, it doesn't matter if you can't understand the value other people put on things. But when there are things worth a lot of money, there will always be people seeking to steal and kill to get that money.

While totally abhorent I treat the man who killed the owner of the cards as any other murderer killing for gain. I hope he gets caught and has a long long time in prison.
But I don't consider him 'dumb' any more than any other criminal out for high value goods. It would have been 'nicer' if the little fether had just burgled the cards, but no, he had to shed blood over them.
If the card are worth so much money on the open market then flaunting them is like flaunting diamonds or large stashes of high denomination bills. Its not the victims fault, but the victim needs to be aware of what happens when items of exceptional value are shown around.
I once had a collection in thr early 90's with a full set of five Mox cards, and sold them long ago. The game has no hold on me. What gets me is that the Magic the Gathering card sets are just ordinary cards, no special security on them. I am surprised that no-one has thought to mass counterfeit them yet. I would lose no sleep over buying a custom printed deck of Magic cards from China, its the only way I would buy into the game frankly, and if it was known that indetectable copies of early rare cards were on the market, the market value problem would disappear like mist in bright sunlight. Tradeable cards are a bs industry of artificial rarity attributed to very commonplace and inexpensive objects, I would cheer if someone setup a print with counterfeit cards and stuck The Finger straight back at them.

Like when GW produce low numbers of figures and then charge top whack for them? *cough* FW Angron.
At least with things like Magic you are guaranteed a rare in every pack and the rares are printed in equal numbers. When buying a pack you have as much chance of getting one rare as you are another, irrespective of their usefulness in the game or value within the community.

I disagree. Nothing wrong with being remembered as being someone that was a great guy by whatever community they were involved in. Some occupations only have worth in the eyes of those that participate in them. Spending such a great amount of time and ressources on such occupations is usually considered foolish by most sane members of society. And the irony of the location of your post is not lost on me, either. I would not admire anyone who'se spent what amounts to a few people's retirement amount on 40K, regardless of the esteems he's held at by the 40k community, or the level of implication they have in their community. On top of things, you would know, if you knew me, that I usually am principally interested by games that have a relatively low initial cost. You are aware that you are posting down in the basement of a Warhammer forum, right?
Also, for all we know, he might've simply spent a 'regular amount' on M:tG, and simply was a longtime gamer like myself. I have many cards boxed up somewhere, each in excess of $50, but that does not mean that I paid the current price for them.
