According to the SM codex, my Tac sgt. can trade his bolter and/or pistol for items on the list. Since he can trade either one for these, and we regularly trade the Boltgun for a chainsword and the pistol for a plasma pistol, etc., can we trade both in and get a combi-flamer and a combi-melta, and then have two options, one shot of each per game?

Based on what you are saying (away from books right now), if it is and/or them you could replace both for combi-weapons.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Would that also mean that one could replace them for say, two combi-plas?

If so, this means a Tac in a Rhino with a plasma gun and a sgt. with two combi-plas can shoot two barrages of rapid fire plasma guns from the top hatches, potentially being 4 plasma shots each turn within 12", right?

Yes the SM Sarge can replace both of his weapons for combi-plasma so he can have 2 combi plasma guns.

Combi weapons are one shot only.

You would only get one turn of 4 plasma shots.

Read the underlined. He said give the Sgt two combi plas.

So two turns of 4 plasma shots (Assuming within double tap range).

Yes, it is. You could also look at it as 235 points for 4 plas shots (within 12") for 2 turns, and 2 more every turn thereafter. 235 is about what I pay for a tac squad anyway, and that's a more dangerous bunch of firepower than most of my tac squads can put out on the move. Granted, that's risking a lot of Gets Hot! mess, but that's the way plas goes.

If 4 plasma shots is scary/dangerous enough to draw fire away from the rest of the army, all the better. If it's not, I get to cruise my Rhino right up and open fire with white hot death.

Exactly!

Also, it just occurred to me, the sgt. shots can roll precision shots...

You can't fire 2 combi-weapons at the same time as you are limited to shooting 1 gun a turn. And they arn't pistols which have an exception.

So having 2 combi-weapons just gives you a second round of shooting with the combi-weapon really, while completely losing any melee upgrade you might have had.

Tac Sgts come with Bolt Pistol and Bolter, so they do not have any CC options as a default. Other than the one BP.

They can exchange the bolter for a CCW, but on a tac squad that is not a great idea.

Right. Which is why we said 2 turns of 4 plas shots, not one turn of shooting 6 shots.

Actually its a great idea, in general. The standard 'cheap' sgt is a BP and a Chainsword (CCW) which gives him 3 attacks, beefing up their overall attacks in cc in case they get charged or need to charge. And by cheap, I mean the 'upgrade' is free.

If all you care about is the fire power at 12" you may want to consider dual plasma pistols. Costs 50% more then 2 combi plas but you can shoot every turn, also get an extra attack but that's just a side note.

How are you getting 4 plasma shots a turn for 2 turns?

In half range, a plasma gun gets 2 shots. Thats one combi-plasma down.

Next turn, another 2 shots. and the last combi is used up.

Now you have 2 bolters. have fun.

One marine in the Squad can have a Plasma gun.

So Marine A's Plasma gun, plus the Sgt's Combi-Plasma = one turn of 4 plas shots at 12" or less, and Marine A's Plasma gun, plus the Sgt's other Combi-Plasma = a second turn of 4 plas shots at 12" or less

Presuming that sergeant isnt killed in the ensuing combat in order to use that extra combi plas, as he's well within charge range of your opponent if you fail to wipe them out

Yeah that's pretty much exactly what I did you know? Of course if you're under the impression that I missed something then please do feel free to enlighten me instead of just saying "'re-read what you read that made you post what you posted", coz you know, that's so helpful by itself...

Right, a plasmagun marine and a double combi-plas sgt in a Rhino, giving two shots of plas per turn for two turns at 24" plus the 6" the Rhino moves, or 12" range getting 4 shots per turn. If they get blown out of the Rhino and then assaulted all before I get two shots off, that's a lot more attention than most of my Tac squads can attract.

There's no point in two plasma pistols, you cannot fire them both in the same turn. That's effectively exactly the same as a plasma pistol and a chainsword. 3 attacks in cc, and one single plasma shot at 12" only, nothing beyond that.

Two plasma pistols is the way to go.
Same cost, same effect at 12", but you can repeatedly do it, and you get the +1 attack in close combat.

I actually run a few assault vets with dual pistols, and it works ok (with assault squads with dual plasma guns). 6 plasma shots a turn does dent things.
