Subject: Amazing Game Video - FFXIV Game World comes to an end
Even if you have no interest in the game you probably will enjoy this video. The Final Fantasy XIV game servers are going down and when they come back it will be as a different game, but this video shows the end of the original world (think of it is as the Light and Dark Worlds from FFIII/VI). For those who want more context I'll put a spoiler section below.
Spoiler:
I haven't played in a few months, and I am having to fill in a few blanks here, so bear with me. The Warrior, Paladin, White Mage, Black Mage, and Archer are all player characters fighting against an Empire that is summoning Bahamut to destroy the world so they can inherit it goes about as well for both sides as expected. The others, like the Elf looking fellow I'll call Gandolf try to put Bahamut back into the prison, by calling on the 12 gods, but as one can see, the spell was unable to contain him. It was actually all a trick, of sorts, as what people thought was Meteor was actually Balamud, the prison of Bahamut. When the heroes thought they had saved the world from Meteor impacting with the planet what they had actually done is allow the Great Dragon to escape his bonds. In the end all Gandalf could do was hide the heroes away in time, so that when the destruction of this realm was over and thousands of years had passed they would reawaken.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Well I assume this is a part of a larger plot and all.
But dragon kills everything and Gandalf sends them to the future? Is that the place where they have guns? Because I remember guns being in FF...
Why were the Bad Guys trying to kill everyone (Including themselves)? That doesn't make sense...

Ohhhh! You mean FF doesn't make sense to you generally? Only some FF games, like [FF Tactics and FFXII] or [FFXIII and FFXIII-2] respectively, take place in the same world. Otherwise, they take place in all different settings. This one seems to focus more on the fantasy than the sci-fi side of things. But anyhow, whether there are guns or not hardly matters. Even in the FF games with a sci-fi emphasis, guns and swords are shown to be co-relevant.
Also, one presumes the bad guys aren't trying to kill themselves but rather didn't fully grasp the consequences of their actions. Either that or, like Sephiroth, they are just nihilists.
Seems fair. I don't think I'll ever understand that series...
Still nice video...

There won't be guns* as FFXIV is pretty straightforward fantasy, unlike the more recent sci-fi heavy Final Fantasy games.
* There might be flintlocks, as there were supposed to be a musketeer class that was never implemented, but that the developers say they are still working on. One of the three factions is a sailing/pirate based society.

It's easier to wrap your head around if you think of Final Fantasy more as a brand, than as a series in the typical sense. There really isn't anything to "get" about Final Fantasy, because Final Fantasy isn't any sort of cohesive thing. I mean I guess they sort of fall back on certain themes over and over, but that hardly makes for a real series.
The video looked cool, though the little cute-elf-thingies felt remarkably out of place with everything else. I haven't really been happy with Square's output in recent years, they need to get to making FFT2 (none of this FFTA crap) and make it not suck.

I'm very grateful to Square Enix for Lightning from FFXIII -- she is not only one of the strongest female character in RPGs but one of the strongest characters regardless of gender in all video games. I really hope Lightning Returns won't be cheaply done.

Is it not clear to everyone that they just want to make movies? Let them make movies, please!!!
Actually there were a bunch of in game events for the players as well, with everyone who had played being invited back to the game for free for the final two days to take part in that huge battle you saw in the video. Before that the players had to do the quests to find all the shrines to attempt to stop Bahamut. Remember the part in the the video where all those runes pop up and try to lock Bahamut back in? The players had to find those. That is also discounting the storyline of finding out the Garlean Empire was trying summon meteor in the first place. So it isn't like there was no game and suddenly there was a cutscene. The video is to help create buzz for the new version of FFXIV, not replace gameplay. It isn't a server reset either, it is part of an ongoing, massive restructuring and reinventing process that has been going on for over a year now.

I love final fantasy with all my heart, but I was an alpha and beta tester for FFXIV. I screamed over and over at the top of my lungs not to release the game in it's release state, but they ignored and released, and it failed.
After all that anger I don't know if I could bring myself to go back.

The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.
Well, I heard that FFXIV is being released on the PS3 for the first time when they've fixed it. If it actually works this time I will be getting it, as a FF MMORPG sounds awesome.
It is a bit poor that they released a game that, simply put, was broken, but they have been remarkably good about apologizing and making up for it.

Believe it or not I do have some idea of what's going on with this game, and I agree with Manchu that they've been extremely good about holding their hands up to the problems with the game that was released and all the efforts they've gone to in order to fix it.
It's just funny that they make yet another amazing CGI video to celebrate what is basically the end of their mistakes 'cause that's probably the only thing Square does with any consistency - make cool CGI movies. They're like Blur if Blur was high on speed the whole time and had an obsessive compulsive disorder that forced them to keep making movies. I hope we get another one to celebrate the opening of the 'new' FFXIV.

I think it goes without saying that there will be one, something along the lines of the FFXII opening cinematic I'd guess. Wasn't the old FFXIV one something like adventurers in a JRPG-styled D&D tavern? I thought it was pretty cool.

Does the gameplay still look incredibly boring? I recall the original reviews....
Aesthetically it was interesting, though. And the vid is epic.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
