Airfix announced a 1/48 scale Afghanistan range for 2012 and it has finally got into production.

http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/operation-herrick-afghanistan/

The most interesting kits from a 40K or other SF viewpoint are the Jackal and Coyote reconnaissance vehicles.

Supacat Jackal HMT (High Mobility Transport)

Supacat Coyote TSV (Tactical Support Vehicle)

The Jackal is nearly 6 meters long and 2 wide making slightly over 11cm long and over 4 wide in model form.

Personally I still feel that 1/35 is a better scale for 40K but these vehicles are so interesting that I am tempted to equip an IG desert force with them.

The rest of the range includes "Snatch" Landrovers, troops and Afghan buildings.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I'd love to see the Airfix site feature some actual pictures of the model aside from the box art every once in a while.

Only airfix would have to make a vehicle in 1/48th. I think it makes no sense to produce a vehicle in a different scale from the norm, it makes dioramas much more difficult.

About 10 months too late. I waited for those, but finally decided to modify Merkavas to make my APCs. Sad though, I like the look.

Maybe as scout vehicles...

Actually.. Tamiya and Italeri, to name two other companies, were ahead of that curve by a few years at least with 1:48 ranges of their own.

I have a Tamiya 1/48th Tiger tank and when I went to find a tank commander for it I couldn't find a single 1/48th figure for that tank and era. Tamiya don't make many 1/48th kits, not as much anyway as when they first brought them out. I guess what I said was wrong, its just an odd scale for AVFs.

They brought out two packs of Germans in the same year IIRC containing not just infantry, but also various tank crew models.

If I may, go with this kit: http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/32512g_infantry/index.htm

It contains a commander made for Tiger tanks (It's the legless bloke), though the second from the left also works.

Thanks! I didn't look hard enough when I saw infantry in the title. Right under my nose, heh. Do many on Dakka build the modern day military stuff? I see plenty doing WW2 and all, but I'm curious to know what these kits are like and how many model them.

Can't help you there I'm afraid, there was this one guy who did gorgeous dioramas of Russian tanks, but he sadly stopped posting a long time ago.

Also, hehe, most see modern kits and see them as kitbash or conversion fodder.

If you want somewhere to chat about 1/35 scale kits (and a bit of 1/48) I'd recommend

Armorama

if you really want to get into the detail

Missing Lynx

so of the stuff like weathering techniques can be ported across to vehicals ofr 40K and similar fairly easily (and building the kits and improving them is fun)

SONS of ORAR does some great WWII stuff...

And I'm always surprised that Weird War II stuff doesn't do a hell of a lot better than it seems to here.

Still, nice stuff!

There is a good and increasing variety of 1/48 scale kits from Tamiya and several Korean and Chinese companies. Of course it has a long way to go before it can match 1/35 or 1/72 scales. OTOH, the number of aeroplane kits in 1/48 is huge. I have a 1/48 scale Hercules to build and the Jackal will make a super diorama piece to go with it.

In 40K I use 1/35 scale kits, though. Modern and SF rather than WW2 mostly.

Regarding Tamiya's 1:48 range, those are actually resized and slightly retooled 1:35 kits, with kick-ass single piece die-cast lower hulls, for added "realism" when handling.
