Ok so me and a friend are getting into 40k, although i did play fantasy years back.

Hes gonna take Chaos and me DA, thing is I'm not too sure what to buy as DA only has veterans which are purely DA. Im guessing i just buy the SM Tactical Squad but just need that confirming.

Im not too sure what to be buying afterwards, i mean i dont mind the Ravenwing bikes, but the Ravenwing Battleforce isnt really for me, as i enjoy using infantry and Tanks.

And with christmas coming up its a good time to spend a bit of cash, so ill probably have about £100-120 to build on my current DV forces and just need someone to give me a list on what a good army would be to buy.

"With the upcoming codex in mind", the best advice is to buy nothing for the time being.

We don't really have definitive listings of what will be in there.

The "Veterans" box is essentially a Command Squad box with the Dark Angels Chapter Upgrade frame. That Chapter Upgrade frame is, at the moment, our only real "Chapter specific" thing next to the Ravenwing bikes.

Does anyone have an idea of when it will be available?

There's a thread in "News and Rumours" about the Dark Angels, which points towards Dark Angels coming in January/February if I remember correctly.

So would buying the DV be pointless? as its a very good option because of its price etc.

I mean i wouldn't really be playing competitively at first.

Just want something to play with and paint, patience isnt something i have

I would have said get the DA codex but I also don't know how soon they will get an updated one.

There are several army lists floating about on that forum as well to get some good ideas from.

Having 30 tac marines is a good place to start for scoring units and can be combat squaded into 5 man groups to make 6 scoring units.

Depending on the kind of tanks you like and if you are going to field terminators maybe a nice big Land Raider to haul them to battle in?

You might check into the Space Marine Megaforce and see if it has more of what you want, as well as maybe pick up a DA upgrade sprue for the infantry.

I would actually say that Dark Vengeance is probably the best buy at the moment.

We know Terminators are not going anywhere. They're a staple of Dark Angels, and removal of Terminators will result in many angry postings from around the interwebs.
We know Bikers are not going anywhere.
We know Tactical Marines are not going anywhere as well.

Beyond that, we might finally be seeing a "Dark Angels Battleforce" akin to the "Blood Angels Battleforce" we have now. We had one for a small time, but then it got removed because of the fact that it was essentially a bundle of the Chapter Upgrade sprues and Tactical Marine boxes.
We also know that the Dark Angels are going to be getting some unique plastic boxed sets, given that as it stands we only have a few conversion kits and that's it.

Would Veterans not be needed at all?

And how many of those upgrades would i need for 20 tac marines and some termies if i needed anymore?

Would you be able to give me a structured list to 1000pt.

blahblah x1 - 100 points
blahblah x2-180 points

Honestly:
The upgrade kits can be used to make whole Marines.
You get enough per sprue to make half of a Tactical Squad and a single Terminator.

What would your advice be? Buy one upgrade kit and mix and match with the Tac squads, or..

I bought the upgrade kit before it was changed to 1 upgrade frame, and have enough to do a full army of footslogging Dark Angels Successors in robes.

That said:
It's up to you how you want to use the robed Marines. Are they going to be sergeants? Veterans? Rank and file?

That will affect how many upgrade frames you'd want.

I'm not really that bothered tbh, just wanna get a 1000pt army with the DV set and the other £120 i have, just wanna pay as little as possible for the conversions etc

I'd pretty suprised if plasma was going anywhere as well, its a very Dark Angels thing, and plasma is still pretty good in 6th ed, so that Tac Squad with all plasma stuff is still a reliable troop choice.

Tactical Marines, Ravenwing, and Deathwing probably aren't going anywhere, and Predators are a good fallback for any Space Marine army.
