Or something.....

Back OT though, have you thought of buying the Rosetta Stone language discs? According to a mate of mine they were bloody brilliant in assisting him to learn Japanese.

I used to have a German Penpal... speaking/writing it is something that I sorely miss D:

MrMerlin, the only words I don't immediately understand are konnte (I need the umlaut, but idk the keyboard command), and paar. But the gist of your sentence is, "Yes, I can give you some tips. PM is underway!"

Ja oder nein?

You don't need to learn German when you have a perfectly good, one size fits all, language at your disposal.

Just shout, in English, speaking slowly as if to a child whilst using misleading hand waving.

Makes me proud to be British (wipes tear from eye).

Right, modals...

Ich kann ein bisschen Deutche sprechen.

my knowledge of German tells me that the modal verb of can says that I conjugate the kann and put the infinitive form of "speak" at the end of the sentence, but Google Translate is telling me I'm wrong, though I'm almost 100% positive I'm right, even using your sentence as a guide you have geben (to give) at the end of the sentence.

I could possibly do it. Though it is sth I'm working on myself. I imagine I know more than you from your description, so I can probably help. One of my only major suggestions though is to work on reading sth in German.

You can try reading this story I wrote, which shouldn't be too advanced.

Auto translators or dictionaries that only give a single synonym are useless. What you need is a list of words and their context and usage. Otherwise you end up saying dumb stuff. I was praised once for calling one of my friends a "Zweiter Weltkrieg Geschichte Streber" yet the same word didn't make any sense when I used it to translate "nerd rage" and was told that the word "nerd" in that use is untranslatable.

And it was actually my friend. There are others like me. He was actually farther out there than I was when it came to the WWII stuff.

If questions arise, I'd be glad to help! Learning new languages is always a nice thing to do. And I realize how much it helped my English to spend a year in the US - apart from all the other benefits of studying abroad for a while.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

You dont need to learn German, we won.

Instead learn to pronounce 'w' with a 'v' sounds.

Next go to a German newsagent and exclaim. "Where are your papers?"

That one never gets old.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

I have enough context from my two years of german class, which was preceeded 3 years of Latin (Latin 3 and German 1 were taken at the same time)... Google Translate was simply being used as a reference.

XD Yah, but the US were pretty close to using it as their first language during the formation of their country. It was a split between English and it, with English only winning narrowly. So we may have been well speaking it if things had gone that way.

The more important thing to learn is to pronounce V properly. That example is fairly obvious.

And the joke was terrible.
