I keep seeing people using power fists or power weapons in grey hunter packs. I always though it was better to save higher point costed upgrades for units that are more durable like termis. Is it cost effective to have a power weapon in a grey hunter pack?

If you do take a PW in a GH pack, maul/axe/sword vs fist vs wolf claw and why?

Ive been taking 2x melta/plasma with MOTW and standard. Should I just add a PW to one of them or does something have to be removed?

Are you talking Grey Hunter only packs? I like to throw in a WG and give him the fist if I do. Otherwise I reckon for 10 GH only the double plasma/melta with MOTW and Standard is what I'd stick with since MOTW gives a bunch of attacks with rending so I reckon you don't need much after that but that's just me.

Its a nice to have if you have the points, but its usually the first thing I cull if I need the points elsewhere. The good thing about power weapons in GH packs is that they are hidden. They are a standard upgrade for a standard troop, there are no sergeants or characters in GH packs, so you can keep your power weapon towards the back of the pack and he is guaranteed to strike, he cant be challenged.

I used to take a power weapon in every squad, but they didn't perform too well, so I'm planning to drop them.
Powerfist are just not worth it on single A models, the axe is better in most cases due to the extra attack.
If you know that you aren't playing vs MEQ, the maul rules, else I prefer the axe. I1 is usualy not an issue as the power weapons are 'hidden' as already mentioned.

I think MOTW is better than a PW rules-wise, but I don't like it fluff-wise, so I don't take it.

The Wolf Banner is a mixed bag. It usually pays off pretty well if you get into melee relatively unscathed, but most of the time my squads either see no melee at all or are so depleted (maybe even lost the banner) that the re-rolls don't change much.

The only thing power fists are good for really is to give your opponent a second thought if he wants to charge you with a walker or a MC. I had this recently where my melta squad was trying to take down a walker and just couldnt do it (bad rolling) hwoever my opponent didnt want to charge into combat jsut because I had a powerfist hidden at the back. Seems stupid to me, but if that happens, then the powerfist has done its job.
That being said, I stand by what I said earlier, power weapons are nice if you have some spare points, but start off with specialist weapons, then MotW, then banner, then power weapon.

I'd put Mark of the Wulfen in before either of the power options.

If the points then become available I'd consider that Power Fist that can't be challenged.

If I have the points I'll take a power axe for the AP2, but I usually find that neither is needed. I will say though that I disagree about the wolf standard though. Of course it depends on how you like to play, but I find that my banners get their points back every game without fail. Remember it lets you reroll overwatch, LD check for counter attack, attack rolls, wound rolls, saving throws, everything. If you save one grey hunter from failing an armour save with it, it has already made back its points.

I currently run powerfists and plasma pistols in each of my 10 man GH packs. I run a footslogging list so I like to have my troops fully loaded.

25 points for 1 attack is kind of a waste. Sure you will get your counter attack but even on a 2 attack champion it is rarely worth it.

Wolf Standards are awesome. That then MotW then a Wolf Guard. and special weapons to suit

Exergy, the GH Powerfist is a bit of a waste, I agree, but if you can't put a WG or IC in the squad for whatever reason, it might become worth it. It's also a handy little thing to have in the squad incase one faces challenges. A few opponents will use Challenges to try to isolate or negate the effects of things like Powerfists. Having one on a non-character means you have a Power Fist that won't be negated by a challenge.

but it is also a powerfist that can be taken out by precisions strikes with no LOS

I don't think it's worth it, especially if you're equipping your units all the same. Take a Mark of the Wulfen instead, it's far better for 15pts and is a better TAC choice.

I've played SW about 3 times recently, the Grey Hunter units I have encountered have had few if any upgrades. Certainly no power weapons.

thanks for the advice. I guess ill just stick with my standard loadout and not take PW in GH squads especially considering how short on points I always find myself
