Subject: Curious about Chaos Demons: Khorne
|
 |
Infiltrating Broodlord
|
So, I am working on doing some of the more comical aspects of chaos, particularly making out an army based on Khorne's love of battle and honour, and since I love my tyranids so much, I decided to make these demons as melee heavy as possible. Most likely going to paint them all shining white with the gold trim to make them seem noble. So, my question is, going over the list of all the Khorne units, which ones are the best for what need? I was mostly bumping around the idea of an all bloodletter army, or something close, but I know next to nothing about the demon strengths and weaknesses, minus the part about not touching grey nights with a 10 foot stick. Any insight would be appreciative.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

I'm thinking about starting small, so would Skulltaker plus a horde of bloodletters work for a simple 500 point force?

Yeah go with skulltaker, he is a beast in CC and just crushes any opponent that comes near his point cost. Throw him in a unit of bloodletters or bloodcrushers and you should be fine. Honestly i would also try your hand at a bloodthirster. He is literally one of the best cc units in the game if not the best.
Anyway bloodletters or bloodcrushers are a good place to start.
Just to let you know khorne is one of the harder mono-god daemon armies to play. It is no where close to competitive. The biggest hinderance is that they just sit around for one or two turn trying to get into assault while they get shot up by everything in your opponents army. It's going to be hard, and you aren't going to win a lot of games. But khorne can be a very very rewarding army to play. I actually enjoy playing khorne with a side of tzeentch to taste.

Khorne is probably the weakest mono-list in the book. Fortunately, we are probably getting a new book soon so this might change. Until then you will have to be content with having a fluffy army that is not particularly competitive. You have two massive challenges with an all Khorne list. The first is that you have literally zero shooting (and slow models) and the second is that your troops are expensive and very fragile. Bloodletters have also been made less effective in combat because Furious Charge lost the Initiative bonus so they are terrible at scoring and will lose a bunch of models even when they wipe a squad of marines.
Juggernauts and Bloodthirsters are both pretty good choices, as is the Skultaker if you stick him on a Juggernaut.

Hmm, when is this new codex release? And I realized that I would have zero shooting. It's something I rather like about it, it being refreshingly blunt. Question is how much can the daemon psykers do to buff their hordes till they get in range.

There are no psykers on the daemon armies, not even the tzeentch ones, they are all shooting attacks only. You could however ally them with CSM and have a psyker buffing them who knows even use some proxied models to keep it fluffy, a possessed sorcerer with a squad of possessed marines (counting as normal CSM), that would give you access to some khorne oblies (which are also daemons) and khorne mutilators/possessed

Target saturation is really impotent with daemons. If you are going to take something make sure it help to overload something of the opponents. This is doubly true for mono-Khorne who is going to have to weather a turn of shooting before it can do anything.
You could either take a lot of crushers and min troops and hope you get the wave you want or a lot of letters and try to overload their anti-troop weapons.
Keep in mind you are going to lose a blood thirster or a unit of crushers off the bat and half your army will be in reserve so it will take some practice before a game will go smooth.
I don't think skull taker is worth the points he is not much more killy and for the points you could get a lot more wounds in crushers.
Good luck and if the first few games ho bad don't get discouraged. It might be counter intuitive, but Khorne is a finesse army.

Ahem, I think slaanesh is much worse, it's even more fragile.
Bloodcrusher spam list is a one brutal list i say, with say 4x5 bloodletters in second wave for scoring.

So, my options are to either use a rapid force of mounted units with minimal infantry, or try and drown the enemy in bloodletters? Hmm, I don't recall anything saying that daemons can't use fortifications. Is that an option?

IIRC yes they can, and the landing pad would be really helpful with them, since you can place it anywhere on your table side (not restricted to your depolyment zone), you can place it in the middle of the table and then your first and 2nd waves can drop safely there and as a bonus they can get a 4+ invul to avoid losing models to range fire

That was my hope. Now, the question would be how much better of a chance would my troops have of surviving, in order to charge the enemy the next turn? I mean, you deploy a sizable number of your troops on them, would it be reasonable to speculate that with reasonable expectation of troop deployments, you might be able to charge into melee combat the next turn?

Some people have been having luck doing the daemon flying circus dp and GD that fly then absolutely as many claws on the ground as possible.
Landing pad is very interesting option!

There are a few things about the landing pad.
1. You are not going the be able to get the 4++ the turn you come down if you want to not scatter.
2. They are kinda high up so you are either going to have to jump down or take a take a turn getting down.
3. This is just kinda a phobia of mine but, if the enemy has infiltrating units the could make it really hard to land on the pad. Never had it happen though.
In Khorne you could also do winged Khorne daemon princes with theBT for target saturation. Heralds on chariots are a sold choice as well for crusher spam.
The other option if you are making models anyways is to Khorneify other units in the book. Khorne scorpions as fiends, brutish models for plague bearers etc.
