Normally my wife and I go to her parents for christmas but for various reasons (not least some familial warfare) we will be staying at home this Christmas. There will be 3 of us; my wife, me and my 2 year old son so obviously a turkey would be overkill (and I don't even like it) soI am looking for an unusual but still 'festive' replacement.
I was thinking about Pheasant but I'm not sure how easy that would be to get. Any suggestions?

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Duck is good. Sainsburys do an excellent duck in plum sauce (2 breasts for £5). Extremely nice.
Alternatively some pork or beef roasted with veg is always good.
If you want to go with any kind of "unusal" meats, try asking in your local butcher as they can probably get in pretty much anything for you if you give them enough notice.
My wife doesn't like duck, I also have it just about every time we have a takeaway

Shame, its great.
Pheasent is good, although if someone has a problem with Duck they may not like the Pheasent. Its definitly different from other domestic meats.
Venison is awsome, although it will probably be fairly expensive over there. Given its probably going to be imported.

EDIT: Also farily common, at least here in 'merica. Dunno about over there.
Don't Duck it. I like a lot of things with duck in it but a whole roast duck is hard to make well.
A traditional dish for Christmas would be roast beef in one of it many forms. Here in the US a strip loin roast is commonly packaged as a "Holiday Roast" I prefer the other side of the bone: a large end Ribeye roast. Soaked in a salt solution and rolled in pepper and herbs you might even call the way I make it "prime rib"
With any beef if you prefer a foolproof solution. Salt liberally with coarse sea or kosher salt, and sear in the bottom of a Dutch oven with a dash of oil. Once at least two sides are browned cover the roast at least halfway with water or a water booze mix. I like corn mash bourbon mixed 1:10 with water. Add in crushed or whole herbs to taste. I like dill, rosemary, bay, zested lemon, white and black pepper. Cook low and slow in the dutch oven covered for 6-8 hours.
I prefer my roasts nice and red by my wife is a well done freak so using the DO gives us both what we want. A well cooked, but moist and beefy holiday treat.

Ahhh, wasn't sure about the deer situation over there. We've got deer pest problems too.

Turkey breast only, a ham instead, or a nice Christmas pizza.

If you want to stick with a roast, I'd suggest a decent, quality raised roast chicken. Let's face it, it's tastier than turkey and a reasonable size.
What about lobster? It would be a good 'extravagance' and the price would be right not having to feed a load of relatives.
looks at your location...
Do you know how expense Lobster can get?
At least it's a small dinner.
How 'bout, surf & turf?
8 oz fillet and some Alaskan King Crab legs! (spendy, but worth it)

Check the op's location... easier to get lobster than alaskan king crab, it's not like here in the US where many states are hundreds and hundreds of miles from the sea. The UK is a small island with plenty of coastal fishing. It will still be pricey, but it's a Christmas meal for 3 (well, two and a little one who might be happier with fish fingers and chips!).

My dad was a poacher. I have had a lot of venison though not that recently. Its also not one of my favourite meats.
I think I may end up going with (or at least suggesting ) mutton; its really nice, I haven't had it for years and my wife likes it. The only problem is sourcing it as none of the butchers near here seem to sell it.

I reccommend fresh fish, you can get good portions and it tastes great.
Either way I wish you a happy christmas and good luck for cooking, I messed up a monkfish meal by putting the veg on late and forgetting the seasoning it gets hectic.

yes but lobster is "slave food"... .he couldn't possible shame himself with eating it
Actually, a good spiral cut, bone in ham is always good for a holiday like christmas. I'd think that your off the beaten path meats, like venison and bison may get a little more pricey than the OP wants. Also, as has been suggested, left over ham from holiday meals make EXCELLENT sandwich fixin's
(and yes, I am joking about the lobster thing, although it's a funny bit of Aussie/British relational history)
