The Catholic Church has opened an exorcism hotline. But claims that cases requiring actual exorcisms remain quite rare.

Tooling up for this December's apocalypse early?

I'd like to see them demonstrate either demonic possession or the divine process of exorcism under independent scientific observation.

Can that be independently verified that neither God nor the Devil exist?

When it comes to getting rid of ghosts & demons, I just wouldn't go with the Catholic church. Not that I can't respect the institution it's just their methods aren't really modern enough. I really want cutting-edge techniques for my exorcisms. That's really why I only hire board-certified Lepercorns (that's like a Centuar only instead of half man, half horse it's half leprechaun half unicorn),

Their training guild is really top notch, so you always get the best service. They only take payments in golden carrots though, so make sure you've got some on hand and before calling.

I'll stick with things I know work. You never know if one of those fancy 'modern' techniques is gonna fail and you end up having to blow the top ten floors off a downtown highrise.

Let's just say that I have a particularly good reason to believe in both God and ghosts. The particular house I was spending the night in had more than 1,000 wounded drown on the front lawn. I've always wondered why Ghosthunters never did a show there.

To this day I can still picture a now deceased pal of mine walking through the place with that burning brand screaming 'I have the fething power! I'll burn this melon-fether down and you won't have anyplace to haunt!"

That was before the tremendous sound of the cast iron framed door in the basement being torn off the hinges from us nailing it shut.

The Catholic Church has had professional Exorcists for a long time now. Personally this is the type of gak that might have kept me interested in the church as an impressionable young sprout.

http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/shadowing-an-exorcist

There's actually an excellent recent book on the subject called "The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist"

Matt Baglio’s curiosity was piqued.

An exorcism course at a Vatican-affiliated university in Rome? It was an unusual topic. As an American journalist living in the Eternal City, he thought it might make for an interesting article; as a non-practicing Catholic at the time, he approached it with some skepticism.

Taught by exorcists and experts in theology, satanic cults, criminology and psychology, the course he took challenged many of his assumptions. But what really intrigued him was the openness and honesty of a fellow student, Father Gary Thomas, a priest from the Diocese of San Jose, Calif., whose bishop, Patrick McGrath, had asked him to undergo training as an exorcist.

On a gamer forum, in a thread about religion and exorcism, yes yes I did most certainly expect the Spanish Inquisition, or at least someone to utter that phrase.

Indeed, every diocese has an exorcist whose identity isn't public info. The Church has actually been having a problem in the past few years of running into a shortage of exorcists

I found it fascinating how thoroughly exorcisms are investigated, and how deep the training for an exorcist from the Catholic church is. Psychology, Criminology, Theology, Demonology (an actual no gak discipline), Occultism, etc all go in to the training and an extensive vetting process is performed on an individual to ensure that the potential "possessed" isn't just a nutter or what have you. I'm sure in extreme cases they skip that, but still quite interesting to see that kind of faith in the reality of good vs. evil on a cosmic/spiritual scale in this day and age.

That reminds me, I want to interview the local diocese's exorcist if possible. I need to send a letter off to the Bishop's office.

Of course, seeing as there's no such thing as demonic possession it makes you wonder exactly what they do to people that need to be 'exorcised', particularly children and vulnerable adults.

Most likely they are people who, if they have anything wrong with them at all, need to be treated by a genuine professional and not some kook from the church who thinks their actually are inhabited by evil spirits. Fortunately they seem to dismiss most cases of rebellious children as nothing more than 'being a teenager'.

This isn't questioning the existence of god. I don't believe in god but that's beside the point. If people really needed to be exorcised of some sort of physical possession then it could be fairly easily demonstrated scientifically and factually. There are claims that the possessed have supernatural strength and the like, from people I've debated this with in the past. The fact that even such obvious manifestations have never has been proven shows it's total crap which makes their treatment through exorcism rather questionable as to what they are 'treating'.

For example, the person I debated with defended that some exorcisms required the use of physical restraint. This they said was in a tiny minority of cases. Well even accepting that, what the hell is going on if even in one case in thousands they have to 'physically restrain' a person in order to 'exorcise them'. Bearing in mind of course that there's no such thing as demonic possession, this means that there are some people being restrained and having exorcisms forced upon them to treat something that just doesn't exist. Tiny minority of cases or not, one case like this is too many. They just shouldn't be allowed to do this to anyone.
