I mean normal infantry or whatever guys not vehicles or anything.
I only have 2 orks done and im thinking i averaged about 8 hours a piece. That seems like alot but im only painting for display not for play.
Is that alot? How long do you take?

I crank out normal troops in a production line style...overall still spending 5ish hours per model. And these are basic troops for playing, not display.

I spend a few hours per guy. Depends on what faction I'm painting though, I find orks are quicker to paint, then again I have done more of them.
Usually the more money I spend the more time I spend on that guy.

My yellow marines take me a good morning & afternoon to get 'nearly' done lol
I can get a pair of 'nid troops done in the same space of time (the black carapace definitely slows me down on those).
Though I'm never attempting to speed paint anything, would rather take my time.

It honestly depends on what I am painting. When I did 45 orks, it took maybe an hour per (but I didn't put any effort into them) The time was spent on Warbosses ect.
With my Khador I probably spend 10 or so hours on a model but there are so few on the table that they are all going to be looked at.

Ya im slow but im also a noob. My ork army is of all ork clanz that came together so im not bored painting the same thing and it keeps me motivated. Im trying to do differant techniques and ideas with every guy.
I rushed my army 10 years ago when i was 11 and they look like crap so i striped them all and slowly redoing them

I take my time and I've been doing this for 3 years now...for my orks I spend about 45min per model, my nids I'm not sure...half the work is from airbrushing to get the basecoats on then the rest is freehand...depending on how bit the model is...like a tervigon I've spent hours working on him and it shouldn't be taking this long...but I just love him too much, he deserves the attention

If I go for baseline "tabletop" standard for my Orks, it's about 2 hours per Ork. But lately I've been putting more effort into them because Im not happy with how it looked, so per model it's jumped to like 4-6 hours per ork now.

I run at about 6 hours per unit (squad, monsterous creature, tank etc), not including construction and undercoating. Special characters usually take a lot longer, as I am more patient with letting layers, washes and glazes dry before moving on (or stripping!).

Somewhere between 3-6 hours on average. I can crank out "tabletop" models in 30 minutes, but I only do those for speed painting competitions. I'd never field a model I had done that fast.
Characters I generally spend 16-24 hours on.

I'd say around 8 hours per model, much like the OP. Depends on the model like. Recently painted the warboss from AOBR, and it was 8 hours on top of what my GF threw at his skintones and some other peices before she burned out.

About the same here. I paint my models disassembled though. I end up with much better quality than I would were I painting a model that I'd already put together. Painting that way also gives me incentive to finish painting them. Kind of difficult to play a game with bitz.

My rank and file troops take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on the work I put into them. That includes assembly and clean up. My special characters I usually take at least double if not quadruple or more time. Vehices are the same way, I spend a lot of time on them and do them over the course of several weeks because the large areas burn me out on painting. I am also in the process of doing a warhound titan that I am on week 4 with putting at least 2 or 3 hours a day into him (my wife has been very understanding of this project)

I usually do my Tau troops pretty quickly, about 2 hours, but I do them as an assembly line
which gets really tedious for meat times and it feels like a lifetime. My chaos space
marines take me about 5 hours each. I really think it depends on how much detail you want
to include in the models and the amount of patience you can put into it.

Around 3-5 hours for basic troops and you can easily double that for character's. But as a few people have been saying, it depends on what models im painting at the time. If its Marines or anything with a lot of armour and flat surface areas the average time per goes up. This is mainly due to blending and getting the look right.
As for my Orks, which ive only just started, the average time is 5-7 hours per basic boy, 3-4 per Grot and easily 10-15 for Characters and vehicles. This is mainly because I want it to be a showy army and its not really for gaming...

Traditionally, my foot horde guard army has taken me about 6 hours per mini, from cutting off the sprue to finishing the flocking at the very end. Of course, I don't use washes, and have a REALLY complicated color scheme for my guardsmen.

TT troops usually between 1-3hrs each (in batches) depending on size/detail etc, TT characters usually 10-20hrs, display minis can take from 20-100hrs.

I usually paint either one large model or a group of 4-6 smaller ones. A batch like this takes 6-8 hours (not including assembly), so I want to say 2 hours per small model. It's boring for me to paint something longer than 8 hours. Example (koldun and widowmakers are separate batches).
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5056/img1015po.jpg
I've done simpler projects with larger batches and clocked in about 20 minutes per model.

This.
I'll paint whenever it grabs me, but I can go for weeks without wanting to do so. For example, I currently have a Snikrot conversion that's sitting on my desk that is at around 3 years and counting to finish its paint job.

It's too variable - how I'm feeling, what else I'm doing and what the miniature is. Rank and file to be dipped is different to rank and file done properly, characters are different. Then it depends if its 15mm or 28/30mm. Skirmish games get more time / model as there are fewer models.

I usually take about an evening to get one Wolf Guard
terminator done, but I'm not satisfied
with the outcome(even though its good tabletop quality) and
am going to strip my finished models,
and start over with an awesome airbrush.
The point of telling you that is, if you are trying to have each
piece be the pinnacle of your abilities, and be a work of art,
then the sky's the limit on time, I'm probably going to spend
8ish hours per guy now, after watching this, and realizing I
can have an army that looks like this.

30-60 minutes per standard infantry model (tabletop/gaming level) and about 8-10 hours per special/character model is what I'd estimate I spend, once you take out the time the model is just sitting there drying or waiting for me to come back to it.
I also do most of my painting while still on the sprue which means touch ups after assembly adding another 10-30 minutes per model.

It depends. My Terminator Chaos lord i made last week took me about 8 hours all in (after prep and building). I can knock out a standard chaos marine in a couple of hours if need be. The paint job wont be great (base, boltgun, wash, highlight, details) but it's good enough for gaming.
