Subject: A year looking back at video games that surprised you...
It has come and gone gentlemen, cats, women, trollers and FBI agents! The year that is! It has been another good year for game and surprising!
Post what surprised you this year in gaming!
You may skip this and post what surprised you most from the video game industry in terms of games!
So this year there have been many games that I have bought, rented, or been loaned too. Here is a short list!
*WARNING SPOILERS
Please note these are my personal opinions on these games, I am an amateur programmer, amateur writer, debater, and philosopher.
Halo 4- One of the best story lines I've seen from the halo series that I haven't seen in a while. It was a great game, but definitely a rent if you do not have xbox live.
Spoiler:
This is one of the few gaming experiences, of actually feeling something for chief and MEGA SPOILER!
You get to see his face.
Spec Ops the Line- This is an incredible game! You need to pick it up if you haven't! It is an incredible story! Awe inspiring, and gripping! I have never had a game make me feel so bad in my life! This is an incredible experience that most modern games do not share!
Spoiler:
This game is dark, it is not fun! But that is the best part! Even though it was not fun does not mean I did not enjoy it! Especially when you are given moral choices! The gameplay was purposely unrealistic, it was mean't to make you think something wasn't right here, it made me and my group of avid gamer friends fell like gak!
The DJ telling you stories of each man you killed.
To you finding out the true secrets of what is going on!
Every choice does not matter, and people will be angered by any choice you make!
This is what makes a great game!
Amnesia- It is truely a scary game, and I was surprised by it! And i have yet to play it again after i completed the game.
Mass Effect 3- I know people hated its ending, but I actually enjoyed the original ending and thought it was a bittersweet ending. Though game-play was kind of not too similar to mass effect 2, it's gun play was not all the greatest, I wish it had been better, and exploring worlds kinda felt empty. The Galaxy felt smaller than it usually does!
Biggest complaint was the DLC packs, see I don't have xbox live, so it was quite useless to me that i could not get the perfect ending, the only way was to get xbox live, which I said no too.
Diablo 3- Some how it was able to pull out a somewhat decent story, amazing visuals and incredible bosses. That being said, the game seemed to lack a certain few things, such as the characters feeling different and more unquie, some did, some didn't. And my everlonging Druid will always be missed. I feel like as if it was handled right but there was only 1 true close combat class, the monk feeling boring and drawed out, the witch doctor feeling like his summons were pathetic and all the rest of his ability uninteresting, the wizards powers of magic seemingly unaffecting, and only being deadlocked to the same abilities that other players use as they are more effective than the other abilities. I was disappointed by the classes, but impressed by the story and the characters, though the plot line was predicatable it was a better and more rewarding than ME3's ending...
Call of Duty Black Ops 2- Good Zombie missions! The only good reason to actually pick up this game is for the Zombie Survival. Thats it!
Spoiler:
It surprised me how little the genre has changed, trying to implement another oh so famous, choosing your ending at the end of the game, Black ops is nothing too special and I gave it a complete pass, except for playing through the campagin. Multiplayer is still the same thing as it has always been and cover still seems to not matter at all as people get higher perks and bomb the gak out of you from orbit. After playing spec ops the line, this game seemed a little childish, and its story kind of bad in comparision. It tried to make you feel something for the bad guy, but unlike spec ops, it wasn't gripping and I didn't feel a thing when he was thrown in prison. It was dull and boring, the RTS section was unneeded and was just a rinse and repeat of Assassin's Creed.
People that say this is the best cod ever! please remember Modern Warfare 1. That is still the Best COD to date. This game did not confuse me, the guy under the paper bag was obvious as he had bloody gear ON! And i hated the characters all the run of the mill soldiers from the modern FPS
ORCS MUST DIE 2!- I loved this game, it is really addicting and surprisingly replayable unlike most tower defense games. It felt rewarding and it was fun to beat up turtles!
Resident Evil 6- It surprised me how much the modern 'scary' game has gone from scary, to, bleh, thats disgusting. Thank god i have all this heavy weaponry to kill it.
World of Warcraft Mists of Pandaria- It was! INCREDIBLY!
Spoiler:
Not worth the money, Same as all the other expansions.
Hitman Absolution- Its better than the previous, I played it, Kind of liked it, but not really enjoyable, same story line as most assassin stories...
(PLEASE NOTE I Know these games/mods wasn't released this year.)
DayZ- I was surprised at the following....
-How cruel people are to you if you are starting player
-Zombies being awoken by the slightest firefight!
-Breaking my legs so bloody much
-WHERES THE WATER? OH GOD
-Stuff being so scattered!
-Helicopters being scary to fly!
-Players killing you so quickly
-Night is worse in DAYZ than hardcore Minecraft.
What happened to me? Heres what happened I was walking and i vaulted a fence, I broke both my legs..... The fence was 1 foot off the ground, i swear this game was trying to kill me.
Minecraft 1.2-1.45 Its incredible how fast time has past since Alpha, but this game keeps getting better and more creative.
Now what is my game of the year? Best Horror game? And what is the most gripping? And what is the must buy NOW? Best Story? Best Voice Acting? Worst Game of the year? Best Racing game? Most Disappointing?
Game of the Year: No doubt I will give this to the one and the only.......... Sonic the Hedgehog 4: EPISODE 1!
...
...
Okay I am not serious. The best game of the year is Halo 4! This is how you restart and start a new game series!
Most Horrifying!! Is! Amnesia! How is it? Because unlike RE6, you don't have a gun, and they appear unexpectedly, and you rarely see them unless you know.. You die.
Most Gripping! Spec Ops the Line wins this, as I have already said, it grips you when you enter dubai. At the beginning not so much so.
Must buy now? Minecraft. If you haven't given it a try yet.... Please do!
Best story! This one goes to both Mass Effect 3 and Spec Ops the Line! for superb game stories!
Best voice acting- This one is clean cut, and not surprisingly. ME3. There are hundreds of voice talent in this one, and provides more voices than a normal anime show.
Worst Game of the Year: Amy. how bad is it? REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD! DON't DON'T DON't DON'T DON'T BUY BUY BUY ITITIT!
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THE MISERY OF THIS GAME IT IS A POOR EXAMPLE OF GAMING AND TO THE GAMING INDUSTRY! If you see it please do not hesitate to call in a hazmat team.
Biggest Disappointment? Resident Evil 6. No matter what my fanboyism says saying it was well done compared to the disaster of RE5, it is still a poor example of writing, of the same bloody writing I suspect from Capcom nowadays. It is the same thing as RE4, it is not scary, it is no-longer the survival horror i was promised, ammo is scarce, but still you have a knife that does a better job than your guns anyway. AI in this game is horrible, it makes halo 4's AI driving look like supreme grand masters of the road. It is not worth your money. This coming from a fanboy of the RE series.
Best Racing Game: Need for Speed Most Wanted. Finally a game where I can see my driving skills to the test! It is a good racing game, but the run of the mill story. Actually come to think of it, there really isn't a story here at all
Most Surprisingly Bad TV show game that caused Asherian the god of being really apologetic with most games to actually hate the experience of playing and wishing to drown himself within a pool? Game of Thrones, now like most movie/tv series games i was expecting it too be bad and somewhat redeemable... Well. I... I... I don't know how to say this but, this is probably the most irredeemable game I have ever played well this year that is... Apart from Amy. This game is glitchy, the voice acting is horrible, the game is just overall bad, it is not even worth the time I put into it. I only put in 2 hours into the game before I realize that this was a horrible game. I realized this game was 30 hours long! For a bad game to literally hit you in the first 10 minutes and say "This game sucks." is undescriablely accurate. But wait asherian! What about the story! FETH THE STORY! This game is basically based on the show, the show which admittedly is good, puts to ruin all the hard work into the Game of Thrones universe. Please for the love of the Emperor give this game a swift shoot to the head.
Most Surprisingly Good TV show game? Walking Dead. I actually liked this game! It was not a carbon copy of the series and was very enjoyable and I recommend most likely a rent or a borrow if possible for this game.
Anyway thats my sentiments on the year! And happy holidays everyone!
Don't forget to share what surprised you!

I found 2012 to be underwhelming overall. Especially compaired to 2011. Though a year with Battlefield 3 and Elder Scrolls V in it is always going to be hard to match.
In terms of 2012, I haven't found a game that I've played more then 2 weeks before I got tired of it. Halo 4 was the only game I was anticipating this year, and even that I kind of got tired of quickly.
2013 I'm hoping will be a lot better. ES Online, Rome II: Total War, Starcraft, and GTA V are all on my list so far.

XCOM surprised me on how well it was received. As a diehard fan I was getting it regardless, but it felt good to see all the acclaim on the web. We shall see about the other one...

I dont play a lot of games put Forza 4 and XCom really stood out for me. Ive only played the demo for Most Wanted but I was terribly addicted to the last one. I guess the new one is the leftovers of the new cancelled Burnout game.
There weren't many must keep games for me this year.
Borderlands 2, AC3, and Halo 4 are the only games that were really good, and Halo is only on my list because of the Multiplayer. Yes I played Mass Effect 3, but the ME games were never my cup of tea.
Paper Mario 3DS didn't fail to be a Paper Mario sequel (IE Damned impossible, but you'll still enjoy it and keep it for a few more play through.)
The Adventure Time game was crazy short and a little disappointing, but still a good game to kill some time at the doctor's with.
The Witcher 2 and Dragon's Dogma didn't wow me in game like they did in the trailers. Armored Core 5 was fun, but I didn't like how you always had to be online, even to play alone. Soul Caliber 5 was good fun for a while.
This year was kinda sad compared to last. I remember last year this time, I got about 4 hours of sleep between From about October 25 to Jan 1, because I had Skyrim, BF3, Mario Kart 7, MvC3, and about five or six more games I bought during those 3 months that I was trying to go through.

I kind of agree and disagree.
Remember Mass Effect 3 came out this year.
Also Planetside 2

I didn't get the hype for ME3. I got it a couple of months ago, put a couple of hours into it, and haven't had any urge to go back to it. It wasn't a bad game, but it really wasn't all that great either IMO.
I did just pick Halo 4 back up again. I played it for a few days after the release, then didn't really get all to fired up to play anymore. I just went through and played episode 2 of the Spartan Ops though, and I'm glad I did. The story seems like it's starting to get pretty good and I feel like it's cemented game of the year for me.

I beat halo 4 on legendary and never saw the chiefs face so no idea what your talking about, even waited for after the credits so your spoiler is unnecessary Asherian.
The only games i was surprised with was diablo 3.......... i was surprised with how much of a gak failure of a game it was, 10+ years of hype and we got the biggest pile of garbage to ever "grace" (and i use the term loosely) the diablo series.
Positive surprise was Borderlands 2, never played the first one so i had no idea what to expect. Other positive surprise was World of Tanks, sure its been around for a while but the 8.0 physics update just made that game so much better
WAAAHG!!! until further notice

Dishonored - Even though it is a bit on the short side and does feel a tad unfinished, it is still an excellent and well made game.
I actually disliked dishonored, but the gameplay was solid.
I was at a gaming night with 2 friends and one brought Dishonored to show us. I honestly fell asleep while he was showing us it (to be fair, it was 5am and we'd been up all night). Things like the rats, the personal choices, and the gun/sword combo were neat, but not something I'd want to spend my money on. At first sight, it looked like something a college senior made with XNA.

I played (and bought ) a bunch of games this year but i keep going back to Skyrim. I think i am finally done with it though, after seeing a few more of the things Solstheim Has to offer that is.
Was fairly underwhemed by Halo 4, am probs gonna trade it in tbh. The actual missions of the campaign were as bland as the majority of the Reach and H3 missions but without the frequent highlights. Oddly the 'sandbox' was as good as ever but somehow the campaign still lacked something. Unlike most people i thought the story was poorly explained pish.
The multiplayer was fun but tbh i dont like Playing multiplayer games i am good at anymore. Makes it far too frustrating when i have a bad match.
Was kinda put off buying the BF3 expansions because of this, the game was fantastic but because i was semi decent the matches when i played badly were too frustrating.
Borderlands 2 is pretty good but as the ante gets upped the game gets less and less enjoyable. From about lvl 1-18 the game is superb, however past that it gets either Totally imbalanced in your favour or against you, seeming to see-saw every half hour or so. You get to become far too reliant on getting lucky with the treasure chests, earlier in the game skill actually counts for something.
EDIT: Mass effect 3 was pretty good but i was VERY annoyed that i couldn't get the full experience because i was missing my me2 savegame. They should have done something similar to what they did in 2. I started replaying it but decided that at somepoint i would replay all three in a marathon Renegade omnibus. The renegade options in 3 were amazing, and i didnt even have all the options unlocked. However i was furstrated with the massive limitations of the game, it had me hankering for a real 'Babylon 5 simulator' kinda like LA Noire/Yakuza 3 in space. I couldn't give a damn about space battles, i just want a free roaming citadel where i can dirve hover cars and interrogate the hell out of aliens+ hand out some serious butt-whoopings to news reporters.
But as things go i think i will be getting me black ops 2. I have always been terrible at COD multiplayer so it will be nice to play an online shooter i can actually enjoy. Also far cry 3 and dishonoured when they inevitably get massive price cuts.

I was actually pretty dissappointed this year. I didnt buy much because nothing good looked worthy of buying.
The only mentionable game i would add here is assassins creed 3, possible the only new game i actually ended up getting. Definitely a contender for game of the year.

On the good side, The Walking Dead surprised me the most. I never played any Telltale Games adventure games but I love the comic; I gave it a try and it was the most depressing gaming experience ever. Truly one of the best games of the years, I can't recall many games that gave me such an emotional connection,
Also, I didn't expect to like X-Com or Guild Wars 2 as much as I did.
On the bad side, I had high hopes for The Old Republic, but the game just wasn't that good, then the Free to Play options limited it too much; it was just sad. Also Mass Effect 3; I love the multiplayer (and I didn't expec t to), but the ending just dissapointed me. I expected better from Bioware, I guess this wasn't their year.

Subject: Re:A year looking back at video games that surprised you...
I haven't played many new games this year. I could probably count the number of new games I played this year on two hands.
Transformers: The Fall of Cybertron - I played a little bit of the previous game and although I loved the art/design I just couldn't get into it. I was expecting the same with this game. But on the first time playing it I ended up spending 3 hours straight on it which is more than I planned when I was going to try the game out... in fact the only reason I stopped was because SNL was on. I played the PC version and plan to try out the 360 version to see how it feels with a controller.
Warlock: Master of the Arcane (this came out this year right?) - I'm terrible at these Civ type games. I didn't expect to play this too long... I thought maybe a half hour or hour... just try the tutorial or whatever. I ended up playing a 16 hour game on my first time trying it out. I still am kind of confused about some of the mechanics but the spells that your 'main character' can utilize are pretty fun and help out a lot.
Guild Wars 2 - I totally wasn't planning on buying this at full price. In fact the only reason I bought it at all was because I had a $50 coupon for Best Buy to burn. I'm totally glad I took the plunge. It's really refreshing and totally wasn't what I expected... I was thinking... this is just WoW without the subscription. But its a little more than that.
Halo 4 - prior to Halo 4 releasing I had purged all of my consoles and games thinking I was going to discontinue the hobby of playing console games (the PC is where I'm at practically all the time). When I heard Halo 4 was coming out I didn't even bat an eyelash. In fact, I kind of rolled my eyes and shook my head at the thought of the game. To me Master Chief's story ended with part 3. I thought 343 was milking it. But then I kept hearing how 343 did a pretty good job with their shot at the franchise, and my ears perked up a little. What convinced me to get a new 360 and a copy of the game was all the talk I heard about the new non-unsc weapons and how the story was pretty good. I was totally blown away when i played it. I finished it the day I brought it home it was so good (by Halo standards).
Eve Online: Inferno - This was my first foray into the Eve Online universe. What drew me to the game was the way the community worked in it. To be really successful on the high-end (even the mid) there is a lot of aspects of working with others that you really ought to utilize. I still have yet to really partake in the 'community/economy' of the game but from what I've tried out (I've been playing for maybe 6 months now) I am very pleased. I was expecting mostly some number crunching, buy/sell type stuff (which actually there is a lot of), but there's tons of other things about the game that really has me interested like fitting your ship with the right equipment, choosing the right shift, skill progression, and the art design.
Eve Online: Retribution - I haven't noticed too much of the changes yet with this new expansion but I like what I see so for. Mostly I've noticed some cosmetic changes like how the 'lock on' targeting looks.
World of Warcraft: Mists of Panderia - The whole 'battle pet' system is pretty neat. I haven't played too much with it yet but its the reason I bothered with the expansion and to restart my subscription... oh and I missed those sexy, sexy Draenei womenz and their hooves.
Ball-in-a-cup Championship Extreme Plus Alpha Limited Collector's Edition - the new lazer etched cup and glowing ball really caught my eye. I like that they added a talent point system and MySpace intergration.
EDIT: Took out SWTOR stuff... that came out in 2011

Have you seen planetside 2
Thats something I need to add to the list. This game is huge.... And I love it. It took me a while to find the class that liked most though.

If Planetside 2 didn't have higher requirements than every other game out there bar none, I might put it on a list other than "games I'm not playing any time soon".

I must admit I don't get the whole "Nyeurrrgh, modern horror games aren't scary, they don't know how to make scary games any more" thing. It just sounds like the normal bitching from oldfags who whine about how "the good old days" were better. An example: Dead Space. It's a really, really creepy game. No matter how good your weapon is you never really feel safe, and the sheer body horror in it is nothing short of disturbing.
Now compare it to a supposedly "scary" game line the shlockfest that was the original Silent Hill. Rather dull environments that just look run down rather than scary, lame attempts at "scary" enemies, a guy with a big metal pyramid on his head that just looks daft, and a stupid ending where the dog turns out to have been in control of the whole thing.
Out of the two there is no contest: Dead Space is the scarier game.

Clearly, you haven't played SH2. The dog ending is a joke ending; it doesn't count.
The monsters are symbolic of the main character's guilt and suffering, and they are pretty fethed up and unnatural looking to boot. And more importantly, the game actually had a dreadful atmosphere; you really got the feeling that the town was against you, and the dull environments emphasized that. I felt more unnerved in the first 10 minutes of SH2 than the whole of Dead Space.
I don't understand what you mean by how you are never safe in dead space. I felt safe plenty of times; I had a lot of ammo, stasis energy and my plasma cutter was fairly sufficient against most enemies. Though I do admit, that part in Dead Space 2 where you are on-board the ishimigura, in one of the corridors was pretty freaky.

Heh heh.
In all seriousness, I haven't played Silent Hill or Dead Space. I want to play both, as they do both look good, and artistically there is no doubt Silent Hill is the better game.
What I will say is that they're both scary in different ways. Silent Hill uses much more symbolic and subtle horror than other games, and is really disturbing as a result.
Dead Space and the newer Resident Evil games on the other hand uses more explicit, "horrific" horror, like those creepy malformed exploding babies from Dead Space 2 and, well, everything from the Dead Space series.
Whilst they're both scary, they are ultimately both different. One isn't necessarily worse than the other, they are just two very different styoes of horror. Whilst you do have weapons in Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 and the Dead Space games, screw up ajd there's still a horrific fate waiting for you. But then I guess I'm just a naive bright eyed bushy tailed youngster.

Actually, squig, you're mixing something up within the horror genre. Silent hill (and I do mean only the old ones, new SH games are all gak) is more the psychological horror game. Dead space is just cheap scares without actually being scary, it just tries to startle you a lot.

But then I guess I'm just a naive bright eyed bushy tailed youngster.
Ah yes, now that is reasonable.
I personally prefer psychological horror. "Action Horror" like dead space just bores me.

This is pretty much it.
In the game Alan Wake you end up in a nut house for creative people.
One of those people is an annoying game developer, who tries to scare you by sneaking up on you (in front of you no less!), and yells "ARRRRGH I'M A MONSTER!", and then begins to insist that he scares the crap out of you.
That's Dead Space in a nut shell.

I have yet to beat Dead Space 2 because I can't play it for more than like 20 to 30 minutes at a time... The game freaks me out... I can handle psychological horror, I love horror films, but I hate when it puts me in the driver seat and gak is jumping out at me...

You'll love the laser eye mini game then.
Then again, the only reason why I didn't progress past that point was more because it was so badly designed and frustrating than horrifying.

The only "new games" that I know of that I played this year were...
FTL - Effing ridiculously amazing. I'm soooo happy I did the kickstarter for it or I may have never had it's experiance.
X-Com - I was downright shocked at how good the game it. One does not merely attempt to remake the greatest game of all time... and do it justice. For what they left out of the original they made up for (almost) in new features. The ending though... was bad, but doesn't hinder it's replayability.
GW2 - buddy bought it for me... and I have clocked a lot of hours into it lol
Not sure Amnesia was new this year, but gotta agree that game is downright horrifying on a level I never have experienced. From moment one I played it in a pitch dark room, headphones in, and volume turned up. I've never had to actually stop playing a game before because I couldn't handle it anymore. i still haven't even come close to finishing it, but fully intend on doing so. Such an utter mind **** and they are coming out with a new one.
