Daring Dark Eldar Raider Rider

Last weekend me and my friend went to the local hobby shop abd bought him some SM. He spent 108 dollars.on a deveatator squad and a commander. He's finkin of buyin a landraider to. I don't know much about hkw a SM ary should be set up, so I told him he sould buy a tac sqaud and a HQ (I assume that a commander is an HQ). We ain't loaded, and he needed to buy paints, so he ended up going with a deveatator squad, which cost $20 less. They entire squad was armed.with heavy weaps, so we figgered it was just as good as a tac squad.
How's tbos for a irst timr army? What shoul he get next?

"Archon Yulliptidon sat apon a throne made of polished glass, which gleamed with magnificence in the rays of the dying suns, beautifully suspended above the the many razor sharp peaks that where Commorragh. The archon held within his hands a a delicate pyramid of sculpted crystal, from which emitted a faint glow, an echo of the soundless screams of pain belonging to countless tortured souls forever trapped within. The room in which the archon sat in was something like a throne room, but displayed apon the walls where helm of every color, but all the same in size and shape. Some bore eagles on their foreheads, and others still contained the decapitated heads of their previous owners. Two huge, beautifully carved iron double doors, engraved with intricate runes of pain and suffering, opened at the far end of the room, to reveal a tall, elegant dark eldar warrior, clad in armor made from bone and flesh. "lord Yulliptidon, you asked for my presence?" Said the arrival, " to what do I owe the pleasure?". The archon raised his elongated head, skin as pale as a full moon, eyes as vivid as a horrible nightmare. " I did not ask for you, Thrayon, I ordered your presence. Do not think to much for your self, for truly, you are not much past a feral that one would find on the streets. As for why I have ordered you to my palace, it is because their is a task that I wish you to preform. I wish you and you kabal to cleanse the imperial out fort of Sargosain Gastienagan." Thrayon was both aghast and interested at what the archon had just said. "Such a task would stretch my kabal to its limits, only a great reward would be enough to do a deed like this." Yulliptidon was outraged by the the proposal of a "great reward" by Thrayon, but did not let his anger show, hiding it with a cold smile that hid his evil intentions surprisingly well. The archon was was famous for never telling a lie in his life, but was very fond of veiled double speak, and this was no exception. "Do not worry, Thrayon, you shall receive what you deserve." Thrayon, happy with this outcome, left to carry out Yulliptidons task. Little did he know what was coming. Thrayon had done a thousand evil deeds, and what he deserved was a horrible death equal to to all those he had caused. Yulliptidons smiled. He was going to have fun."

To answer what I think your question is, I would say that an HQ and a devastator squad isn't going to be a viable army. Scouts are cheap, and have gotten quite good with the advent of 6th edition. I'd say buy a few squads of them. Scouts, a commander, and some devastators would be a decent core to a smallish army.

I think it may have been one of those "type this with your elbow" things but anyway, he needs a codex, an HQ and 2 troops so I would say grab 2 tac marine boxes, a commander and the codex. after that he'll have his basic army and some fire support so maybe throw in a rhino and also an assault squad. edit, a good scout squad will cost more money and less points than normal marines so I would say a tac squad or two would better if you want to build a larger army quickly

If he wants to get an army, tell him to get a battleforce. Extremely cheap solution to start an army with, and now he'll have fast attack, troops, heavy support and a HQ. Get a Termie or LoTD squad, and he'll have a solid, flexible army at his disposal.

There's always great bargains on trademe, land raiders for between $50-90. If you can get access to that then that would be a better way to go. Then you can pick up a good amount of marines and a dread for cheap to make a good army

How did he spend 108 dollars on a devestator squad and a commander? Must have bought lots of paint?
Devestators are not tactical marines, they aren't troops but heavy support. He'll need tactical marines or scouts for his troops requirements

No paints, that's what the retail price is here in nz.$44 for the commander, $64 for devastators.

This. It sounds like both of you need to get the rulebooks and learn how the game works before buying anything else, since neither of you even know what a legal army consists of.

Seriously a really good idea. Because you need at least 1 HQ and 2 Troop Choices if your going to be playing with other people. You'll also need the Codex so you can have even amount of points, and you know what upgrades and heavy weapons you can take before you give 8 marines in a tac squad plasma guns or something.
Tac Squads are the best way to fill in Space Marine Troop choices, they are one of the best infantry choices in 40k. Scouts are nice too, I have some w/ sniper rifles in my small SM force and they aren't bad.

His next purchase should be a rulebook/DV if he can off the models, then a codex, then two troops, I recommend tactical boxes. From there he can figure out what to buy. Protip: The Badab War part 1 has some really nice SC's if he plans on doing a Badab War chapter.... or if he wants fnp marines.

I know what a legal army consists of, and my older brother and me share a rulebook. The reason that we only got a HQ and 1 troop choice was because we had to get pain, brushes, glue and after that we only had 110 dollars left, so we didthe best we could (which was pretty close to a legal army)
PS. Christmas is comin, so i wouldn't be suprised if he got a rulebook, codex, 2 tac squads (i'll buy him one) and a land-raider. His cus also plays SM, so he will probably get him some stuff as well. Automatically Appended Next Post: And i didn't type with a hammer... I used a mallet.

Well for a real battle he needs 2 troops so a tac squad is 1 he'll need another. But for starters i would tell him to get a rhino for transport.
And a captain is a more basic HQ.
And power to the space marines.

That would be a sergeant. A captain is similar to an archon, to put it in DE terms, a choppy character who pairs with assault units. He shouldn't feel railroaded into a captain (unless hes playing bikes) I much prefer the librarian to the captain for added flexibilityand being more fun to play. Ofc its his call.

Landraiders are good for transporting Terminators; and even then, not really necessary. Your friend needs more troops, and a good idea about where he wants his list to go.
Does he want drop pods? He needs marines and Pedro Kantor
Does he want to do Mech? He needs hella rhinos
Foot? More marines and terminators
Bikes? He needs bikes.
Landraiders aren't very good, and certainly shouldn't be in a shopping list before rhinos, more marines, and a predator or vindicator.
Once he gets his tac squads in order (He should have at least 4), something any SM player can use is a squad of Thunderhammer Terminators, or a Squad of Sternguard in a Drop Pod. Much more useful options than a Land Raider.

Sounds like your friend is just going crazy and throwing money at his army. Thats all well and good (more power to those as can do that) but just buying the biggest and best looking units does not an effective or legal army make.
Try and get him to slow down and look into what sort of army he wants, and how he should go about building it.

Don't buy Rhinos - EVER!!!
Why you ask? For only a few dollars more, you can get the ever more flexible Razorback kit, which is simply a Rhino + big gunz sprue.
When assembling the kit, DO NOT! glue the top piece the turret sits on into place!!! Instead, just leave it un-glued, then glue the two halves of the Rhino top door together and voila! You now have an inter-changable Rhino/Razorback at your disposal!
Not sure the difference in New Zeland dollars, but in Canadian money, it works out to be maybe $5 more per transport. However, the added versitility is well worth the investment and it gives you the freedom to easily swap between the two main transport options without being forced to buy more models/conversion packs.

This is true, and in my drunkedness, I forgot to mention it. Really, this is some of the most important advice for a budding SM player.
