So, it looks like I finally might be putting together my Necron Raiders, all made of the original metal models. I won't be wanting any new flying models in the army. How do I defend against flyers? Is there anything in the Necron dex apart from the Scythes that constitutes a valid anti-flyer unit???

:/

For the best flyer defense take Zandrekh, and use him to give your shootiest unit (20 warriors works well) Tank Hunters. That much gauss re-rolling pen rolls kills any vehicle quickly. If your local meta runs more flyers than that can handle, Triarch Stalkers might help as well, being able to re-roll misses agains target the Stalkers have hit previously in the phase should also boost your flyer killing capacity. The upswing of these tactics is that Zandy's flexibility doesn't mean you've tailored your list specifically vs. flyers.

EDIT: Since you said you're running an army of the old metal models, perhaps you won't want to run the stalker (you can convert up a Zandrekh I'm sure), Destroyer Lords (also need to be converted) attached to the unit of your choice seems a popular choice as well.

Thanks - yeah, stalkers are out, but I could convert a Zandrekh easily. I would have thought the stormy Cryptek would have something useful but it appears not.

How do Destroyer Lords help, though?

They grant Preferred enemy, allowing you to reroll 1's.

Destroyer Lords give their units PE, which lets your re-roll the ones to hit.

But, I would suggest Annihilation Barges....they do well in an AA role

Twin Linked tesla fire helps. Not limiting yourself by theme if you want to make a competitive force also helps a bit. Fortifications? Allies that you don't mind taking good anti air with?

Conversions also help with keeping your army Themed. I don't know how much access you have to the original models, but the old destroyers could certainly be converted up to represent Anni Barges.

perhaps a list of what and how many of the old school models you have access to.

From what i have been told (not had cause yet to try it myself) Annihilation Barges are very handy at AA (re-rolling all non-6's, each successful hit actually gives you 3 hits).

The StormTek might be good if it's range wasn't so shoddy.

So, Old School Metal Necron Raiders available are...

* 2 Lords
* 6 Destroyers (seated ones, I was going to use these as Tomb Blades, but useable as Destroyers/Hvy Destroyers)
* 40 or so Warriors
* a few Immortals
* loads of Scarabs

I also have six 3ed Tomb Spyders and a Monolith, which could stay or go. Neither of them are original 'Raider' era, but the Tomb Spyders allow me to use my masses of metal Scarabs more effectively, and the Monolith is a nice centrepiece. I was also planning on converting Space Crusade Andriods (the 'original' Necrons) into Crypteks.

I could convert spare Warriors or the Immortals to other infantry (even Wraiths) easily enough if required. A few Destroyers together might be able to be converted into decent Command Barge sized vehicle, but Annihilation Barge sized vehicles would basically be a scratch build.

I'm not looking for the most competitive list - the challenge is more 'how can I make the army at least half decent so that I don't just insta-lose when faced with flyers?" !!

I was considering some allies - not sure which though - keeping with the conversion theme, I could probably turn some old-school Destroyers into decent Remora Drone counts-as if I were to go with Tau. The other options are (robot) Chaos, (robot) Orks or (robot) Grey Knights, which isn't great...

This simply isn't true. Flyers aren't that big of a deal if you have a plan. Flyers are less of a big deal for Crons.

Mass bodies (which Crons can do if they want), other flyers (which Crons do very well), Anni Barges (must have for Crons), and AV 13 in general (again, Crons do very well) all counter the majority of flyers you will see.

This is the problem; most people have to deal with this even without the strict fluffy implications you've placed.

You definitely need a quad gun and aegis.

A Necron-y one would look quite cool, actually.

Use the Monolith as a bastion and the Crystal as a quad gun.

You could field a billion scoring dudes and give them scarab bubble wrap and then just march them to victory. TL destructors are one of the best things necrons do so I might be inclined to include a couple of those.

I don't know why you couldn't have a couple nightscythes full of immortals though. Sorta fit's the raider theme.

I think you're a bit mistaken here, the Anni barge is the same model as the command barge only with a big double barreled gun strapped on, very doable with the old lawnchair destroyers. Don't forget that you can always use a couple of these to add crescent shapes while sticking to the 'flavor' of the way old Crons.

You're right, I'm completely mistaken. I thought you meant...um...something Arks...

Will have a look at Annihilation Barges...

I can't be very useful in this topic since I almost never face flyers (my friends don't run them), but my solution would be warrior blobs and Zhandrekh. Also Annihilation Barges are great. That will give you a whole lot of shots to bring up to the flyers, and with Zhandrekh you may even reroll failed penetration rolls.

Unfortunately that's all I can come with, but I hope it helped.

Oh, and by the way, I must say I love the idea of an all old edition converted army! Could you please upload some pictures of your models? I'd love to see them! Thank You!

I used some old RAM chips. Made 4 long segments and 4 short segments. Then I used the Tesla Destructor from one of my Command Barges and came up with a cool Necron-esque platform to stand it on. Came out great. People seem to love the RAM defense line.

Got any pics? i'm thinking buying 4 old bits of RAm is probably cheaper than buyign the "proper" GW kits. I was thinking of using sections of green tic-tac boxes as a "force field" aegis line.

Necrons are in fact one of the best armies in the game against Flyers, thanks largely to the Annihilation Barge, which is completely awesome. 3 hits for every 6 rolled and twin-linked means that they actually score over 3 predicted hits against Flyers with the primary weapon alone. While this is a high variance attack, it is still devastating.

I would not bother to take an ADL/Quad-gun with Necrons because I think they are one of the few armies that has more than adequate anti-flyer within their own Codex; that said, I would definitely field flyers of my own, so if you're not planning on it an ADL and quad-gun might be a solid investment.

I'm at work now, but I'll try to remember to post some up tonight. It isn't completed yet, but it's functional. I have to glue a few more bits on there to give it a real Necron feel and paint it up. The standard RAM chip is roughly the same size as the long section of the ADL, so I put a slight bend in the center of it, so it stands better and shortens the piece slightly. It also helped that the RAM I have has a metal shielding on it for heat sink purposes, so it was able to bend without harming the RAM chips board itself.
