After him, the delightfully confused Zahndrek, though Trazyn the Infinite is also interesting. I've actually liked the backstories to the new Necron characters, though Imhotek is somewhat bland.

In the wider universe, likely between Cain and Eisenhorn. However, that's heavily influenced by the writing style of the books they're involved in; very personal, the way Cain views the world is incredibly amusing; everyone and everything is potential cover or something which may kill him. And Eisenhorn, well that man needs no introduction.

The Gaunt's Ghosts characters are, on the whole, quite good, but they're often just a little too heroic for me to really love them. There's a few flawed but noble characters, and some really messed up ones; they're well written, but feel just a little too artificial at times.

I know that someone will probably kill me for this, but: who is Eisenhorn?

He's the main character from the Dan Abnett series of the same name. An Imperial Inquisitor who's adventures take him from being a young spotless Inquisitor, and then misfortune and the need to do what he must to overcome evil leads him down the darker paths of being a radical.

it's a very good read, in my opinion.

All of the Primarchs but especially Magnus, Guilliman, Dorn, Mortarion, and Perturabo.

From the rulebooks, I like Ahriman, Prince Yriel, and O'Shaserra.

What do you mean by "from the rulebooks"?

Characters who are actually fieldable in armies, I suspect. I actively based my list only on such nonsense.

Allowing characters from outside the rulebooks though, my all-time favorite is undoubtedly Magnus the Red, but like Manchu I like at least most of the Primarchs, with Magnus followed by Lorgar, the Lion, Perturabo, Fulgrim, Angron, and Leman Russ (Oho indeed).

Magnus IMO captured that classic mythological, tragic greek demigod feel better than the others.

Also... I'd really like to cite Ollanius Pius. I really would.

Spoiler:
Then, Know No Fear made him a fething Highlander, or maybe the 40k version of The Doctor. Such a monumently stupid change in an otherwise mostly solid book (It had other problems, but this is the most offensive). Pius's appeal was that he was a normal human, who had the sheer heroic resolve to stand up to Horus, a demigod with the full might of Chaos coursing through his very being, in defense of the wounded Emperor, knowing without a shadow of a doubt that he would die, but doing the right, the heroic thing anyway.

Now, apparently he's some 30,000+ old immortal who travels the galaxy.

Dude why.

The changes to Pius encouraged me to engage in a kind of fiction denial.

It just didn't happen.

Just like how there were only 2 starwars movies.

I wonder if they'll ever get around to explaining what happened to Han after he was frozen in carbonite.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Ollanius Pius is a guardsman who stood in the path of Horus the Betrayer, defending the Emperor who was laid low. Horus quickly flayed him with a glance, but this motivated the Emperor to destroy his wayward son, convincing himself that Horus was gone, replaced by Chaos wholly.

Now he sucks.

Magnus, Ahriman, Garviel Loken, Koriel Zeth, Trazyn the Infinite jerkwad, Leman Russ, Vulcan....I want all of these people together for a BBQ. I will cook up some chicken and make some Primarch Punch. Everyone else has to bring sides. Russ is not allowed to bring booze. He'll also have to agree to no fighting with Magnus and Ahriman....and also Ahriman and Magnus are going to have to agree to keep it civil. Also, no one loan their cell phone to Trazyn. I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

Draigo of the Grey Knights sounds like an elite badass, he seems very overpowered for his being trapped in the warp killing thousands if not millions of daemons of all sizes. Seems like he would be the next Emperor(here come the heretic posts...) Seems cool to find few characters who have a strong mind to resist the warp.

Gabriel Angelos, I would have to add him to the list of my personal favorite badasses. He's lead his Company into many, many battles and campaigns, saving his chapter from complete devastation, killing daemons with a single swing of his hammer, etc. Plus, he IS the Chapter Master of my favorite chapter, the Blood Ravens ^.-.

Abbadon the Despoiler... For the conquer of all of Cadian Gate in the 13th Black Crusade, owning a warship that can destroy planets, I don't need to explain why I love him.

Kharn the Betrayer. I love the bloodlust he causes, he is special type of 'insane' or 'crazy' who probably doesn't need armor repainting, just let the blood do the painting itself.

That is my list of my favorite characters. There are lots more, but too many to name. Warhammer 40K is rich of many, many characters, there is probably a character for everyone in the world.

Urien Rakarth, the frankenstein of 40,000. He is a mafia boss, king of the hill undisputed, so he goes out to battle because its fun and gives him an excuse to play with his toys.
