Just thought I would share this with my fellow dakkanaughts

Creative Assembly gets Warhammer license in multi-title deal, first game in 2013

The Creative Assembly is going from legionaries to Lizardmen, having obtained the rights to develop Warhammer fantasy games. Sega announced today that it and subsidiary Creative Assembly have entered into a multi-title licensing deal with miniature makers Games Workshop, with a dev team already working to get the studio's first Warhammer game out for next year. Creative Assembly's license is only for the Warhammer fantasy line and not for the Warhammer 40K universe, as clarified to Eurogamer by both Sega and Warhammer 40K license holder THQ.

The last decade saw THQ pump out a swathe of Warhammer 40K games, but outside of two Namco-published real-time strategies and EA's Warhammer Online, it's been all quiet on the fantasy front. That's something Creative Assembly must hope to rectify, although it's not like the studio is desperate for pies to cram its fingers into. The British developer says it's working on Total War: Rome 2, the as yet unnamed Alien game, the first Warhammer game, and two other unannounced projects.

THANK YOU, GOD!

Creative Assembly's games are absolutely incredible, and their campaigns are also amazing. The campaign in Medieval II was so good. I will without a doubt buy this game and relish it as though it were the ring of power....my presciouss...

You know, if you think about it, it does make sense for Relic/THQ to hold 40k, because the style of games that Relic makes are very WW2-style - small squad dynamic, capzones, breakthrough units like tanks and artillery support, very 40k.

Creative Assembly leans for a particular style of game since Rome: Total War. They know the paradigm for lines of infantry very well - musket lines, towed cannon, and lines of pike infantry with cavalry reserves. They are unquestionably the perfect developer for Warhammer Fantasy, albeit - I'm not sure 40k would even be their area of expertise. I'd love to see them try, though

Uhhhhhh...

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay?

I mean, after a while, we're gonna end up with virtual WHFB on our computer. We're still gonna have to pay with real money for each unit, though.

They're okay. The campaigns are kind of meh though, it's really only good because it lets me feth around with history like a goddess.

How are their campaigns meh?

Nothing says fun like making sure the finely oiled warmachine of Rome crushes those rebellious German tribes.

Can't wait for this. At least i can finally get in a game of warhammer fantasy even if it's virtual considering 40k 6th edition's release. I'm praying there will be skaven like in 'mark of chaos' but considering their are 15 factions in warhammer fantasy and skaven didn't really make it as their own stand-alone faction in warhammer online kind of worries me of the prospect there might be no skaven. I don't get to play a lot of games but how does 'total war' handle magic? Magic abilities are one of the bigger things to fantasy so lacking them would be disappointing.

@winnertakesall: Eh don't worry dude melissia hates everything. It's just how she is. Far as i'm concerned thinking it's ok or even saying it's good in parts means it has her "it'll do" seal of approval.

Also yeah melissia i'm joking. So yeah take nothing i say seriously....pretty much ever in fact.

Hehe, I don't like historical games in general, except for when they allow me to deviate strongly from history. Such as playing as Spain and conquering all of Europe to turn it in to a Spaniard paradise

@melissia: Oh you know i've grown on you even if it's a malignant tumor melissia .

I don't know how 'total war' is except for shogun 2 and i wasn't terribly fond of it. The reason for that is mostly that i don't care for eastern/asian culture. I just can't get into it for the most part. Gunpowder units in that game are fun but few and far between. To me gunlines are much more fun. When i got shogun 2 it turns out i wanted 'fall of the samurai' and got the wrong one. I wanted gatling guns so badly too. Other than that i'd like to play the other total war games like 'empire: total war' or the napoleon one. I suppose it can also possibly teach you some history even if you get to give it the middle finger and kick it in the balls a few times.

Rome is the best in my opinion.

I tend to agree actually. Mostly because the setting is far less overdone than medieval or the Japanese settings.

So what races can we expect to see? I figure warriors of chaos and empire are a given. High elves are pretty likely with dwarfs probably next in line. Orcs and skaven are also pretty likely. An undead army or dark elves aren't terribly likely but more so than the ones i haven't mentioned. I'm sure factions like bretonnia, wood elves, ogres and the myriad chaos races are going to be put on hold if they even get done. There is always a chance they add a faction through DLC or more through an expansion but i dunno.

I'm actually pretty worried about the magic aspect the more i think about it. How much experience if any does this company have with magic powers added to a game? I'm very curious to know. Magic is pretty significant in fantasy.

@melissia: Well what's your opinion of 'empire: total war' and the 'napoleon: total war' games.

I figure we'll see all of the races and just start off with something like Empire or Elves, and conquer other nations to add them to our playable list.

Like Total War...

Yeah but the factions in warhammer fantasy are a bit different than the different units in 'total war' i think. I mean sure some will look different but there's a lot of customization to deal with in warhammer. I think total war will get that part probably. It's just the factions are in some cases vastly different. I don't think you could compare warriors of chaos too easily to empire or undead too easily with elves. At least the armies in total war have some similarity. In shogun 2 most of the units you played with were pretty much the same for every army with a few given bonuses. The other total war games may have been a bit different or had some different skins for characters but the armies in warhammer fantasy are vastly different in some cases. So yeah i don't fully expect all the factions to come out or at least not all at once. Maybe DLC and expansions will have more. I honestly can't say as i'm not fully sure what this company and the team itself are capable of.

Again, many units in total war are unique. Besides, you don't need to put that much deatil into the models.

They would probably do it as if it was unit special abilities that recharge (like flaming arrows/screaming arrows/rally etc. in Shogun 2) which could work well....

Im psyched for this!

From what I've heard, the actual gameplay in the Shogun games is among the best of the Total War series. I can imagine that the setting could be a bit overdone though.

Of course as you know I'm a self admitted Japanatic (although not to the point where I declare something to be the best solely because it is Japanese, or want to make myself Japanese by cutting my eyelids...only to the point of buying over expensive action figures and watching way too many cartoons).
