Hello, everyone. I am a longtime card gamer that has decided to sell the farm and get into 40k. I actually got more satisfaction out of painting one space marine than I have playing CCG's for sixteen years. Anyway, my veteran player buddy of mine has helped me to assemble the craziest list I could think of. PLEASE give me some criticism; I need a way to fit some more anti-air/ anti-tank stuff in it.
Let me know:
Elite 1: Sternguard Veteran Squad (6)
(+Darnath Lysander +Master of The Forge)
DROP POD
Troop 1: Tactical Squad (10)
(Melta Gun, Multi-Melta, Conbi-Melta)
DROP POD
Troop 2: Tactical Squad (10)
(Flamer, Heavy Flamer and Multi-Flamer)
DROP POD
Troop 3: Tactical Squad (10)
(Plasma Gun, Plasma Canon andCombi-Plasmagun)
DROP POD
Heavy 1: Ironclad Dread
(Seismic Hammer, Melta gun, Heavy Flamer)
DROP POD
Heavy 2: Ironclad Dread
(Hammer, Melta, Heavy Flamer)
DROP POD
Heavy 3: Ironclad Dread
(hammer, Melta, Heavy Flamer)
DROP POD
Elite 2: Dread
(Heavy Flamer, Assault Cannon)
DROP POD
Elite 3: Dread
Heavy Flamer, Assault Cannon)
DROP POD
I CALL IT 'DEATH FROM ABOVE'
POINT TOTAL: 1995

Welcome to DakkaDakka! (Feels weird to do that, since I'm new here myself...)
From my calculations, that's ~$315 in drop pods (ebay prices).
Were I you, I would look into this or this.

Hi and welcome!
That's a lot of stuff. Have you played much? There are a lot of different armies, you should try playing a few. That's a big investment if you buy it all and decide you like CSM or eldar better.
As for the list, you should post it in the 40k army list section, more people would be able to see it and they could probably help you a lot.
I hope you enjoy dakka!

Welcome to Dakka!
As sweet as it looks i dont think this list is legal!
You have to have atleast 51% of your army on the field at the beginning of the first turn. Units that have to start the game in reserve dont count towards this total. When you are finding the total % you need on the field you count units as a whole too not individual models. Also you have 6 Elite slots. Ironclads arent Heavies in the Codex SM.
I am not a rules junkie though so you might want to post this in http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/14.page
Good luck and Welcome!

Hopefully one day i'll have an army! |

According to the sixth edition rulebook, units that must start in reserve do not count towards the 51% factoring. And since all units in drop pods must begin in reserve, I technically wouldn't need anything on the field to deploy. Drop pod assault rule would drop five of those pods in on the first turn, so it would work out. As for the Dread thing, I am running a Master of the Forge. He grants me the ability to run Dread as elite and heavy choices.
(We had an argument between several players in our local gaming store about the units deployed thing, but it was ruled out in my favor in the FAQ)
And yes, it is a large investment. I'm looking at spending about $1100 total to get into Space Marines, but I have tried playing some Orks and Tyranids before, and I think I really like the 'swiss army knife-ability' of this army. And, I actually really like the Space Marine core Codex rules.
I considered modifying this list by maybe cutting it down a bit to fit SGT. Telion with an Icarus Lass Canon to allocate wounds with his special rule. Or perhaps, I would include some Storm Talons to get shots at those annoying flyers.
Thanks for the feedback, guys

You have to have atleast 51% of your army on the field at the beginning of the first turn. Units that have to start the game in reserve dont count towards this total. When you are finding the total % you need on the field you count units as a whole too not individual models.
This is inaccurate.
I will break it down a bit, as people tend to misinterpret this quite often.
Quotes are from page 124 of the BYB.
When deploying their armies, players can choose to deploy up to half of their units (rounding up) keeping them as Reserves to arrive later.
Count your units
If there are an even number, half can go in reserves, example: you have 6 units, up to 3 can go in reserves.
If an odd number, 1 more than half can go in reserves, example: you have 7 units, up to 4 can go in reserves.
Units that must start the game in reserves are ignored for the purposes of working out how many other units may do so. A unit and its Dedicated Transport are counted as a single unit for these purposes.
Examples: Drop pods, Flyers, everything in Codex: Chaos Daemons
Independent characters are also counted as a single unit regardless of whether they have joined another unit or not.
If you only have 1 character, and everything else has a dedicated drop pod (as this list appears) you have 1 unit to figure yoiur reserves from. Half of 1 is .5, rounded up, that gives you 1 total unit to reserve. This list is legal in that regards.
I am very rusty on vanilla codex, so not sure if the actual list is ok, it may be off as you say, I have no idea.

HI,
Welcome to Dakka but you'd probably get a better response from the army lists sub forum.

Indeed. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/14.page Post over here. Give it a title like "2000 point Imperial Fists Dreadnought Drop Pods" or somesuch. You'll get a lot more feedback.

Unfortunately, both Lysander and the Master of the Forge are independent characters, by the looks of things one would have to start off on the board. That, or you'd have to drop one of them.

I'm not sure that works that way. I think you just have to count them for figuring out how many units you have, to work out what 50% is. If they're in a squad that is in a Drop Pod, they obviously can't start on the board, as they're in a transport that can't start on the board.
It would matter if you were just casually reserving things, rather than looking at things that need to start in reserve. Say, 6 squads of Terminators and 2 ICs would mean that you need to have 4 things ( ICs and groups of Terminators) on the table rather than 3 even if the ICs join the units.
But I may have this wrong.

Hmm. Sad to say, that sounds correct to me. Meaning, you have a choice between getting a 100pts HQ to put at the back of the board and let waste (or similar), hope for 1st turn and put a pod down next to any characters you have, or try and create a means of getting a squad to start with him...
