so i have had an idea in my head for awhile now to do a pre-heresy death guard army so thought i would have a go, as i have always been a fan of nurgle and haven't played 40k since the new rules came in im planing on getting dark vengeance for the rule book and i will start a nurgle chaos army from the models in that and maybe some of the dark angels will become pre herasy death guard

so first up is the sargent for one of my death guard tactical squads armed with power weapon and bolt pistol. he uses a tactical marines legs and torso with the eagle filed off and a right bolt pistol arm with the bald head from the kit as well, inquisitor cortez's thunder hammer and a chaos marines backpack. the helmet is from the chaos warrior kit i just filed off the horns and the bottom neck joint as well, originally i did hollow it out to attach to the belt but it didnt look right because of his pose.

the next is the sargent for my assault squad i'm gonna be running these without jump packs but in a rhino, he is made from a black templar torso, assualt marine legs, an old chaos raptor bolt pistol arm, the mace is from the empire captain kit, the head is the half metal one from the tactical marines and another chaos marine back pack.

none of the marines haveright shoulda pads as im going to sculpt death guard ones if i cant then maybe get the forge world ones

i also started work on some chaos cultist/gaurd allys i want at lest five 10 man squads to represent all the different chaos factions nurgle, khorn, tzeench, slaneesh and undivided

these are all gonna be sargents for the five squads

first up is my zombie commissar (nurgle cultist), still got some green stuffing to do on him and most of the cultist to be honest. i'm gonna give him a fat belly and the nurgle symbol on the shoulder pad.

next up is my khorn cultist leader, he is truly huge i really liked it from the moment i made him truly looks like a berserker only problem is he is massive bigger than a marine but i'm gonna put that down to the bleesings of his dark god

here is my tzeench sorcerer, was once a sanctioned psycher but couldn't resist the warp

and lastly a dark mecanicus machine priest to represent my undivided cultists, i really like how he turned out an was quit simple to make, i cut of the axe blade and switched it for an ork nob chainsaw blade, his back pack is from the iron warriors guy with a servo arm from the marine techpriest and the mecandrites are from an old necromander model i think.

Dude. these turned out awesome. I really like the Zombie COmmisar and the tactical sargent. The helm sitting on the ground is a really nice touch.
Cant wait to see your blog prgress. What else are you going to be including in your army? Anythoughts. Where are you going to be drawing your preherasy images from as well. Any sources you would like to share.

and i also painted up my assault squad sargent as a test model still need to get the shoulder pads done though

@sennacherib - for sources its just what i have read from the Horus heresy books and the old chaos codex's and stuff, sort of pieced together really for my paint scheme i'm basing it of the front cover of "fight of the Eisenstein"

as for the army pre-heresy wise im useing the black templar codex and will have :-

HQ

brother-captain garro = space marine captain

typhius = emperors champion

Elites

5 deathshroud terminators = 5 close combat terminators with thunder hammer and storm shield

huron-fal = dreadnought armed with lascannon and missle launcher

Troops

10 marines w/sargent armed with power weapon and bolt pistol (thunder hammer sargent) and a plasma gun

10 marines w/ plasma gun

10 close combat marines w/ sargent armed with power weapon and bolt pistol (mace wielding sargent)
and a rhino

Fast Attack

3 Jet bikes one armed with a melta

Heavy Support

Predator annihilator w/ lascannon sponsons

it comes to like 2pts under 1500

small update the tonight the shoulder pad is a bit messed up on the right side i think its cause i didnt push the instamold on to the original sculpt hard enougth so gonna have to remould it.

my other instamould for the scythe blades however is working perfectly i now have enough for my deathshroud, need to make one more for typhius though.

and lastly a bit of painting on the nurgle/ zombie commissar

so new armylist is

HQ

Brother-Captain Nathaniel Garro (Space Marine Captain) w/storm bolter, relic blade and artificer armour

TROOPS

10 Man Tactical Squad w/ plasma gun and Sgt with power weapon

FAST ATTACK

10 Man assault squad (no jump packs) Sgt with power weapon and Rhino transport

so started on my tactical squad these will go with the hammer wielding Sargent,

first up i did the bases these are meant to look like metal grill/ deck plating

next up is to glue on legs and torso of a tactical marine, these have the Aquila carved off.

next are the arms taken from tactical and chaos space marines and the head, these are chaos warrior heads with the horns filled off.
i also added a small bionic to this one

next is the power pack from the old chaos marines with any spikes and chaos arrows taken off

i then add a shoulder pad just waiting on left shoulder pads and bolters from forge world to finish, oh and one of these guys will end up being a plasma gun

so more work on my death guard had some forge world stuff delivered shoulder pads and bolters, i must say i am inpresed no defects or any mold lines really amazing stuff

mark 2 death guard shoulder pads

and phobes pattern bolters, i added a purity seal to one im gonna be painting them on the spure

heres the painted up sholder pad on my Sargent

i also added a loin cloth to him

i also added a few details to my assault Sargent, first a holster for his bolt pistol

and secound a cloth to his back

thats it for today i might post a tutorial on how i paint the white next time

ok i promised this tutorial an age ago so best get it done this is how i paint the white on my death guard

stage 1: after a spray with chaos black i paint on a layer of mythril silver to all the meal areas such as vents, armour joints and blades etc. after it drys i give it a coat of watered down black in with about a 4:1 water to ink ratio.

stage 2: i then do all the armour in the foundation paint adeptus battlegrey leaving black in all the deepest recesses and armor segment lines.

stage 3: i next use the foundation paint astronomican grey other the model making sure to leave a little of the previous colour showing around joints recesses etc. i usually do this stage in two thin layers.

stage 4: next up is a mix of astronomican and white scar this is about a 1:2 mix ratio and helps the white coverage better and is slightly off white which means you can do edge highlighting with pure white scar, this is built up in about two or three thin layers which gives a smooth coverage. also leaving some of the previous layer showing.

lastly i go over the model and pick out any details and armour trim such as skulls, purity seals and the shoulder pads i also add small amounts of brass to some of the metal components, then finally gluing on the bolter

Carmarthen, Wales

so i picked up this today

this will be the first of my HQ's First Captain Calas Typhon. if you have been following the Horus heresy novels it does mention in one of the short stories that typhon was a librarian before they were banned by the emperor. so here we go with the conversion.

first of the extras you get with this model are cool and will probably feature somewhere else in my army later on.

so first up i filed of all the librarian and imperial symbols as death guard didn't wear the eagle back then.

i also filed off the crux terminatus as these weren't invented in pre-heresy times, i left the skull as its less sculpting work for when i do the death guard icon later i can just build around it.

i then moved on to his force weapon i cut off the eagle on top as i want him to have a manreaper he is typhus after all, i also cut off the massive book that is on this shoulder pad
its still a bit rough so i will smooth it out more later and resculpt the trim.

i then added the scythe blade, i used the one from the cairn wraith. I'm going to fill in the little holes and notches as i want a smooth looking blade.

and lastly i added a clenched fist for his right hand as i will later be adding a storm shield just waiting to get my hands on a dread knight one.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Like the work you are doing with the Librarian.

Also, when it comes to showing casting things - make sure you are not casting other people's work as Dakka does not permit it.

In terms of using instant mould - try using miliput for things like shoulder pads etc - it is much softer so is easier to push into the mould.

When casting shoulder pads (which you will have made completely from scratch of course...), try sticking the original to some plastic card/plastic wallet using PVA/superglue, then just making a press mould - you can squeeze instant mould under the rim of the shoulder pad to form the back of the mould. Just means that you have a mould where you can remove excess GS/miliput from the back and use it in something else.

Remember also that you can cut the instant mould when it is cool so you can re-use the excess mould material to make another mould.

yet more work on typhus, i sorted out his base like the rest of them.

i also filled in the shoulder pad trim and the pits and holes on the scythe.

i then started to sculpt a death guard symbol on the shoulder

and this is how he looks so far just got to find a shield for him now and finish the symbol

i also finished a kit bash for my third and last Sargent, he will be for my second tacitical squad, he uses the body from the chaos havoc Sargent space marine legs, the arm from the devestators Sargent and the weapon is from the new chaos warrior lord, a death guard shoulder pad and a chaos space marine back pack.

finally got a shield for typhus from the deathwing knights kit after lots of cutting and filling (an arm on one side and the logo on the other ) i finally got it ready to greenstuff so i began making the logo from the one i sculpted that was to big for his shoulder.

after gluing on the logo i can now sculpt the rest when its dry

I like your work, but the photography could be improved so it would be easier to see what's going on there. My main problem is when the focus is taken off the model. It seems like a hit or miss method with the camera. I can only recommend taking more time to get the least blur on the model itself, since it seems like your camera can do high quality shots when it's focused correctly.

Camerawork aside, I really think you've got these guys going right, especially in giving Typhon a different aspect than just the 'ancient barnacle man' look he gets later on. I'm not so sure about the psychic hood, as it does just make him look more like the stereotypical 'Librarian in Terminator Armor'. Maybe you could remove the current one and make a more subtle one?

You could also attach a helmet somewhere on his belt, the same style as his later corrupted helmet, to foreshadow the change. Just makes it a bit easier for me to reconcile the lack of a helmet when they carry one with them, especially when they're also using a shield (for extra protection, right?)

Kaesar II

PS: If you change out the entire head/ hood area with a Typhus-esque helmet and a small psyk hood, that could really change the model's look a whole lot too.
