More of a thought exercise than anything else. How many points would a Company of Space Marines (100 models plus HQ) cost to field? Would it be an effective list?

Bare bones battle company is gonna run 1915. That gives you 10 tactical squads of 10 men strong with each squad having 7 bolters, 1 flamer, a hw(ML/MM/HB) and the sergeant. you also have the bare captain and a command squad again bare.

As far as effectiveness goes you would see some major problems with the lack of any transportation, so you would be foot slogging. It is a lot of bodies and they are marines so you should be a resilient army. You are pretty limited tactically since your stuck with the same of everything. Your units are also not great at anything, they are somewhat good at a most things. be afraid of any high strength low AP pie plates.

While you can do it for under 2,000 you would be better off running at the 3,000 point mark. This will get you wargear, transports, etc.

If you are going strictly with company assets, you miss out on tanks, vets, and scouts. Which puts a crimp in list building. Still a lot of fun things you can do with it though.

Ok, how about for a single FOC compliant list?

Except no battle company is 10 Tactical Marines.

A Battle Company is 6 Tacs, 2 Assaults, 2 Devastators

With a Captain and Command Squad, (With Banner + Champion), the Dreadnoughts in whatever Battle Company you pick (if you are ultramarines, for example, the Second Company has 2 Dreadnoughts, while the 4th has 4.)

Just for fun, I tallied up the points for the Ultramarine's second company, as pictured on pages 18-19 of the codex. I got a total of 2,840 points. That's without any transports (but with some goofy wargear choices).

A standard battle company will fit on a single FOC. If you start doing odd things, you might need to branch out to a second, but you fill the minimums no problem. You are supposed to have 4 dreads when at full strength, which is the only thing that would require the second. If you field your assault squads on bikes, or in speeders, you can eat up your FA slots.
