Just picked up 40 of the "power armored" mobile infantry new in box (the ones that look like the old CGI TV show) for 35$ and 3 of the chicken walkers and a plasma bug new in box for another $40. They seemed so cheap I couldn't resist, but after buying them, I'm kind of wondering if I got a good deal. They looked pretty good, not jaw dropping, but for less than a dollar a guy and being models from my favorite show as a kid, I couldn't resist. I saw them, saw the price, and next thing I knew I was at the checkout scene. All I've ever seen of these models were a few blurry pics on forums, and that really surprised me, because normally I research the heck out of what I want before I buy.

Have any of you guys ever done this? Seen a "great" deal and just bought it impulsively, only to realize you have no idea whether it's good or crap afterwards? This is bugging the heck out of me and I'm hoping I didn't screw up

Also, while we're on the subject, what did the starter box have in it? Looks like the only way I can find warrior bugs right now and was wondering what the Mobile infantry components to the box are. Looks like 12 more power armor guys as best I can tell.

starter set had 18 MI and 20 bugs giving you 300 points of bugs and about 1000 of MI unless you can find a good source of bugs which i cant anymore building a bug force is really hard, shame great game but sold it on when i couldn't get and tanker bugs seems all you can buy is hopper or blaster bugs now and the plasma bug but for 40MI and 3 walkers you could do with about 100 warrior bugs, good luck

Shall we have a go
at the far end now, sir?

I done something similar with Chaos Dwarfs years ago, couldn't be bothered painting them, was very sad, and stuck them in a cupboard and forgot about them. Fast forward a few years, and suddenly ebay buyers were ready to pay top dollar for metal chaos dwarfs.

So it turned out well in the end.

I don't think you got a great deal but as long as you are happy with them you did good and at the end of the day it wasn't all that expensive per mini.

I needed 20 backpacks from the Space Marine commander sprue.
Saw them on the site of an ebay seller and bought them immediately.

They cost me 60 $ but it was a 1 in a million chance to get them as a lot, instead of buying them one by one, which would have cost me far more because of the shipping.

YOU got a pretty good deal. bvack in the day that stuff would have easily been over a hundred something bucks on end.

The starter box had two squads of troopers, and a metric gak ton of bugs. The prize was the scenery, the books, the dice, and the templates.

The game is fluid, and even though they didn't do it justice it is a fun game.

And for what its worth, it IS still one of the best games out there, even though Mongoose screwed the pooch on it with thier overzelousness.

YOU have a great deal, don't think you don't. I have more of these guys then I know what to do with, PM me and I can easily hook you up with the contents of a starter set without even thinking about it. I'm home in a day for a little while and I'll start digging them out.

Talk to me in PM and we can make something happen.

(That metric gak ton need a good home, by the way.)

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. You got a pretty good deal. Not amazing considering what they go for now, but a good solid deal. If the figs are metal you got a really good deal. I don't think there's any way you got shafted, but the real question is are you going to use them for anything, and if not, are you even going to paint them? The really good news is that a platoon of humans in body armor and a trio of walkers is enough to play most any sci-fi combat game. Warengine, Vor/No Limits, Stargrunt II, Gruntz, Fubar, Tomorrow's War, etc.

I frequently buy stuff and decide later the project isn't going to happen, though I usually buy low and in almost all cases I come out ahead.

As for how they look, there are tons of examples on line if you do a google images search.Lastly, if you're willing to mix brands, Defiance Games bugs may be a good way to build up some basic bugs.

I'm definitely going to use them, I'm just not sure what for yet. I'd love to use them with their original game, even if I only get to play it a few times. That requires me picking up a bug army though, which wont be easy (even though hoppers and plasma bugs are only 7 bucks a box, I'm sure you cant build an army with just those)

If I cant, they'll make great stormtroopers at least, and aside from giving a couple melta/plasma i could keep most of them original and use them for both systems. Either way, i wil paint them.

I loved the shows and movies as a kid and am having serious nostalgia right now because of these minis. I'll definitely be painting them and figuring out at least some way to get them on the table.

I got the Starship Troopers starter box, all unassembled and still on the sprue except for one bug for $1. It's all still in the same condition, with the box still where I left it when I first brought it home.

IMO Starship troopers is a lot of fun.

If you want to round out your army check out troll and toad as they had a bunch of the bugs very cheap.

If you get enjoyment out of the mini and the game then you made a good purchase, if not then maybe you got a raw deal. There's no way other people can judge that for you.

Sounds like at the least you got some Tyranids and a box of unique Stormtroopers.

I use the ass end of the Plasma Bugs for my Mycetic Spores.

As for the deal, at GenCon for a few years you could get any box of SST minis for $5. The starter box was $15-$25. So, sort of a good deal.

Alright well they came in. The MI are awesome, very happy with them.

Walkers are eh, but I got em cheap so I'm happy. Definitely easier to build than IG sentinels I'll give em that

As for the plasma bug, no idea what the hell I'll do with that monstrosity. Got a friend who plays nids, might ask him if he can use it.

Same here. Also, Clan War. I would love to unload them, but all that metal would cost an arm and a leg to ship...

I actually really liked the Starship Troopers models, not amazing but solid and I always liked the style. If I ever pick up IG then i'll probably look for getting about a million, but I picked up a box of infantry and a chicken-walker and I'm happy with them. Should really put them together though...

I gotta say, the MI infantry are dead on what they look like in the show. Was really impressed when i put the first few together. They had to use a truckload of tiny bits to achieve that though. All those little armor bits hanging off their belt, their shoulder armor, etc all are seperate. Takes a while to put them together, but they look great. Already converted one to hold a meltagun and they fit well, so they make easy conversions to hold Ig weapons. i'm using mine as stormtroopers, but they would make a cool IG army as regular dudes as well.

As for the chicken walker, it must take all of 5 minutes to put together. There's almost no parts for it

You could do that and make something with the rest of the body.

Or keep it intact and build it into a bio-Titan.

It would have made a nice Tervigon but there is an official kit for that now.

i must say, i am a fan of the warrior bugs.

is it possible to do an all-warrior tyranid army?
if so, those would be nice for counts-as warriors, with minimal conversion needed to give them weapons and such.

I think Mr Moustaffa has been aware enough of the problems with Defiance games to stay as far away from their bugs until they actually hit the shelves as he can.

If not, I can remind him of the whole thing!

No, I do not need to be reminded

I'm still sad about that. Those panzergrenadiers had so much potential.

Oh well, these MI will make cool stormtroopers as well. Almost done building the first 5 with a couple of meltas and they look great. Best part is aside from the melta guys, I can still use these for the starship trooper game if I get a chance (I'm using their regular gear for the normal guys).

Anybody looking for some cheap stormtrooper substitutes, these MI will work well for you I think.
