Hey there,

As much as I'd like to take the credit, this was made by my brother - entirely scratch-built from paper, cardboard, toothpicks, chopsticks, marbles and a couple of screws:

WOW WOW WOW, Man, Calm down! That is an appalling comment, the dakka showcase is a place for useful tips and pulling the good parts out of models people post. not to send them into the dirt.

There are no good parts about it, when someone posts their work they should realize not everyone will be all pink eyed and warm & fuzzy about their pile of junk. Its harsh but that is how life is!

I think someone needs a lesson on basic manners.

Is it beautiful? No.
Is it well made considering what the components are? Yes.
Is it something that the OP (or at least, his brother) should be proud of? Absolutely.

"If you can't afford the hobby stay out of it". That's a lot of people that should suddenly up and quit 40k there.

And back on topic, while I agree it looks tacky and cheap, it's a brilliant attempt at scratch building with the resources available, and if anything, will make a great proxy!

This could be a young kid that loves the game but cannot afford to play at this time. They could be the future of this game, and due to your cruel and unthinking comment, when they get to the point that they can afford a hobby they will simply say "anything but 40K, there are to many (insert derogatory term)". You are what makes this hobby look bad to the critics. "If you cant afford the hobby, then stay out"? Really? Obviously, you don't know the foundation this game was based on. Have you seen some of the stuff the early pioneers of this game have made....leading to the same people making some of the best items ever created in the game? Life is tough, yes, I agree, but it is made worse by people that make comments like that.

While I think it's a rather ugly model, I think most of that stems from the paint looking like it was just globbed on. Remember: many thin, smooth coats are better than one thick, globby coat. Just because it's a cheap, paper model doesn't mean that you have to give it a shoddy paint job; take your time, and be patient.
I'm all for scratch building, and this is a much better attempt than many other Paperhammer models, but that paint is just ruining what could be a much better-looking proxy.

Also, don't let people who give un-constructive comments get you down. There is a much more tactful way to display distaste or disapproval for something than some other folks have displayed.

Good lord, you are what is wrong in this hobby. Having a big post count does not give you the right to be such a douche.

On a more positive note, for a paper model, it looks great to me. For the painting... thin your paint. As someone said before, many thin layers>one big layer.

I'm going to say I'm not a fan, it looks "odd" and I wouldn't allow it as a model in game, as it seems to be quite small and only bears some basic resemblance to the actual model. It's not awful, nor should you quit the game, but I wouldn't play against it.

Hence why we play the game and enjoy our hobbies, because it makes life that much more bearable! obviously due to this snobby comment I assume you have had a bad day and you want to take your frustrations on this poor fella, but next time you insert a comment like this make it constructive so that it will help the person in his next scratch-build, yes its not the best but its a very good try for a scratch build, I personally think its a good try, I just think the legs should be a bit (like 2") taller but its very good IMHO.

Said the guy with a few measly pictures of some mediocre (at best) paintjobs in his gallery.
Got to many bad comments on your own stuff?
Well... That's how life is!
Come back when you have something to show off yourself before you insult other peoples' work.

Sarcasm aside I think one shoud at least give the guy some credit for the effort he made to make these models.

I personally think it's cool. Certainly not as polished as some sort of pro-level job, but at the came time your brother shows he has a lot of creativity, imagination, and effort. Thanks for posting it!

I think it looks cool and is better then anything I could make out of the assortment of materials used by the guys brother, good job, wouldn't mind someone using as a proxy or if they could not afford one as a lot of effort has clearly gone into it.

This is an awesome first attempt! to be constructive i would say the joint needs to be cleaned up, and i would also use a better quality card for the model or fork out a little bit and source some plasticard!

but still im assuming this is a first attempt, and yeah...keep practicing

Thanks all for the constructive criticism. While it's not exactly up to pro standards, I'm still really impressed with the final product. Though, I must admit, he could have done a little better in some places - the joints were put on rather quickly, hence the globs around the marbles, and the paint job was done in an afternoon. But, again, considering he had near zero past experience and paper to work with, I'm impressed.

I'll pass the painting tips on to my brother, though I don't know if he'll have the patience to use them, thanks anyway!

Is that an old school pencil sharpener face in there? Looks good for a first attempt scratch built. If he keeps working at it, he will get alot better. Keep encouraging him.

I love this thing for how insanely determined someone was to create a model out of what they had. I admire that drive and given the materials involved: this is a pretty meticulously put-together piece.

This kicks the stuffing out of some of my first scratches, which included some tanks and way-simpler shapes.

Tell your bro to keep building, it's awesome stuff.

It's really solid for the materials used. Most of the criticism has to do with that tbh. He ought to try using some plasticard and perhaps some cheap necron bits (from ebay). You can get plasticard for real cheap at the hardware store- just go buy some 'for sale' signs that they have.
