So, I'm pretty sure this game is a rampant disease. It started with one friend getting AOBR box and forcing others to play so they got stuff, I'm in military so half the world away and they talk me into it. we all get eachother stuff for eachothers armies for yule. Wives/gfs/fiances forced to play. All find FLGS near us and play more people. the contaigen keeps spreading and consuming all. It's basicly the flood.
I now spend my freetime surfing dakka or reading fluff or omnibus's from the different astartes chapters or painting and assembling, when not doing these I'm looking up painting techniques.
In less than 9 months I've managed to get over 4k DE, 3k SW, and 3k CSM without upgrades, just base models. (purchasing great deals on armies and religiously checking swap shop, ebay, and craigslist helped) It's basicly all I think about and wont stop until I have a decent army of every kind. (years in the future I hope)
I'm interested in hearing from you all how it consumed your lives and to what extent, what got you started/introduced
Look at it like this, crack would cost you as much, your health would suffer massively and you'd probably catch something nasty from a shared needle.
Same with alcohol you can get several forms of cancer from it, it can cause brain damage over time and will when over used alter your reaction time and personality causing irrational behavior.
Also once you've got your buzz you have nothing after but an empty wallet.
With 40k once your money is gone you still have something to show for it.
It's a hobby. It's a hobby that you can purchase once and never again. It's something you can build on, something that never becomes worthless, something that shows your effort as both a general and a painter/modeler.
I chill on dakka dakka, I play 40k with my 4 armies that I've collected over 4+ years, but I also run 40k roleplay games, play warmachine, play computer games, watch anime, ect ect.
40k isn't a disease, it's part of my life.
I got started after playing the hell out of dawn of war, and my first couple battles had me getting totaled by very WAAC players. Still here, and going strong.

For me, it was a demonstration game at the local hobby/paintball store that got me and three friends started, back in 1997 about a year and a half from the release of third edition. Me and three friends all pooled our money and we bought the second edition starter box (with the Ork and Space Marine player paying more, as they would get the models). We all got a codex (Orks, Ultramarines, Chaos and Eldar) and picked up a few blister packs/boxes to get us all started. We had no previous experience with the type of game so we struggled at first but eventually got it all figured out and began to play regularly. We purchased what we could when we could (I was making minimum wage, splitting rent/utilities/groceries in an apartment so I couldn't afford much), I still remember the first models I bought. Two boxes of Guardians, Maugan-Ra, Dark Reapers and a Falcon. Eventually I got my three brothers into the hobby (Emperor forgive my soul) and without stepping foot in a FLGS, I had a pretty good sized group of people to play with.
When third edition was released, my friends and brothers began drifting away from the hobby but I dived right in, I was hopelessly hooked! I started going to the FLGS every saturday, began attending tournaments and even went to the first two Los Angeles Grand Tournaments. I placed 9th overall in the first but I had a dismal showing in the second (150-ish). Not long after the second tournament and my poor showing, 4th edition (I think...) was released and I found myself drifting away from the hobby. Between a poor showing at the LAGT and not being able to afford the hobby, I decided it was probably time to quit. Not much later, I sold everything off and got out of the hobby.
Flash forward to 2012 and the release of 6th edition, I find myself becoming hooked once more (brought on by my brother, payback!). I've been patiently awaiting the release of the Dark Angels, which I am sure I will spend a minor fortune on. This time around, I can afford it however.
those are good points about how the money could be worse. Plus well painted models look pretty cool on a shelf.
Also, juraigamer I have been meaning to ask someone about that cause I've played basicly every kind of tabletop rpg but are the 40k ones worth getting? How do they make it work?
My first army was Orcs long long ago. I ditched em for Space Wolves, then about 7 years ago I gave up the game an ebayed all my stuff. Only to replace all my Space Wolf stuff 3 years ago. Then came Grey Knights, followed by Imperial Guard, followed by Tau, followed by Dark Angels.
Yep full blown addiction here.
Just so yea know you won't see to many replies to this thread, most aren't willing to admit that they have a problem.
Oh yea I hate Forgeworld, for Xmas I bought myself a bunch of preheresy stuff.
I need help

Ordered 35 tactical marines, 2 apothecaries, 2 special weapon sets, 15 Cataphracti w/ 2 Power Axe sets an a Special weapon sets, a commader an Banner set, and a Spartan Land Raider. Fighting the urge to buy more tac marines and the new tac marine weapon set they just put out, also want some Deimos pattern Predators, but the resin cleaning is slow going on the infantry and the Spartan looks like its going to be a frikin nightmare so I might hold off on more stuff right now. I already have an Achilles and 2 Storm Eagles to go along with everything.

Sure do, Betrayal is a work of art. I plan on doing Imperial Fists, although its going to be awhile before their specific rules come out :(. Big fan of Dorn after Flight of the Eisenstein.

In junior high a friend was like "ever heard of 40k?" and since then ive spread the hobby to brother, 3 of my cousins, one of my brothers friends, and all the regulars in my old wow guild who even though none of us play WoW anymore we have all become good warhammer friends. The last guy we got hooked even became so fascinated by it he went and got a job at a GW. Poor guy.
When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.
I got into it in 2001 after I went to a local store's gaming room to find someone to play MageKnight against. One of my friends was there, playing a game with his friends. I stayed and watched for a while, and it looked like a lot of fun. So I started saving up my money, and a couple of months later, I finally had enough to get my first purchase: a box of Eldar Dire Avengers (the ones with the plastic bodies and metal heads). At that point I had no idea that you couldn't mix units from different armies, and I didn't know the rules, so I ended up just picking the ones that looked coolest to me.
Slowly I built up an army, just playing with what I had available. The group I played with was nice; they usually just kinda attacked each other's armies in multiplayer free-for-all games and saved me for last, at least unless there was nothing else to kill at the moment.
I went from Eldar to IG to Space Marines, looking for an army that would work better for me since I lost pretty much every one of my games. I even lost a game against a player who showed up with an army totaling about 2/3 to 3/4 of the maximum points allowance for the tournament.
At this point I was becoming a GUO, due to a mental illness getting more and more severe - one of those ones where having no idea about being sick is part of the illness - and eventually I just stopped gaming because I was in no condition to be out in public - and not just because of excessively poor hygiene.
And then I pretty much skipped over 4th edition. Even though I got diagnosed and treated, some of the residual symptoms made it very hard to go out in public, particularly to engage in social activities, especially with strangers. I gave up on WH40k as a game, until one night I was griping about how it was a shame that my Sisters of Battle would never see a tabletop because I had no one to play with, and to my surprise, my mom piped up, offering to play.
We played a lot of games from that day up to September 2011. September 2011 is when the excessive complaints I was reading on this very forum about the WD Sisters of Battle Codex finally broke my optimism. Subsequently, I wasn't able to enjoy WH40k anywhere near as much as I had been. and from then to now, over a year later, I can count the number of games I've played on one hand.
But there was a small bit of hope that got restored. One night, a while back, I was feeling the mood to wallow in complaints, and so I came to Dakka and found a thread about Sisters on the first page. And in it was a post that reminded me of why I had been just fine with the WD dex in the first place.
I've loved the 40k setting since grade school, but never had the money for it until recently.
After spending many years playing Dawn of War, reading the books and just watching things progress (or not, in the case of the wider plot), it's immensely satisfying to now have my own armies, though it'll be a long time before I'm truly finished painting, detailing and customizing them.
It's an enjoyable, relaxing hobby which allows far more social activity than the more contemporary video game hobby which has largely begun to bore me, and gives me a chance to be somewhat meditative in between the demands of finishing my degree, working and managing the rest of my life.
Hardly a disease.
Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.
I think this is the coolest way you can start playing 40k. I started alone and honestly I sometimes had a hard time finding playmates. But having friends that are willing to get playing with you is amazin.
Also, you guys buy a lot to get all the units.
I started in 4th edition after years of watching from the sidelines. I was an avid roleplayer, not much of a war gamer.
I lost interest for a short period of time, but when 5th edition came out I jumped in with both feet. Sold my original army off, collected Tyranids, two different CSM armies with a bunch of ForgeWorld components, then restarted Marines and went with Ultramarines as my chosen chapter.
I have amassed a pretty extensive amount of terrain as well as built four gaming tables for my dedicated hobby room in my house.
Somewhere in there I started a Podcast dedicated to 40k, which is approaching its third year in production.
I have travelled to Adepticon multiple times (where we broadcast the 40k tournament finals live in video) and other events up and down the West Coast of the US. I am traveling to the UK in April specifically to go to Warhammer World. Though while I am there I will go to Salute, record with a UK based Podcast, and also meet with several Black Library authors who I have come to know through my show.
Fortunately my wife tolerates all of this as 40k, in one form or another, consumes a huge amount of my time.
I have found it to be incredibly rewarding.

*"Hmmmm... I'm up late a lot due to night shift jobs and whatnot, and playing guitar late at night wakes the family up. I need a quieter hobby for late at night. Hey, I could do models! I've always wanted to!"
*Buys a bunch of models, puts them together, only to realize you can't do jack with them but have them sit there and look pretty.
*"well this sucks, if only I could use the models I built so they weren't just paperweights. Oh yeah, there used to be a gaming store near where I lived when I was a kid, I wonder if it's still there!"
*Lo and behold, Rusty Scabbard is still there. I walk in, fall in love with IG and orks. Descent into madness begins. This is towards the waning days of 5th ed, a little over a year ago. I bought 2 boxes of the Catachan command box, and I was hooked.
*"I won't need much, I'll just play it a little on the side. I'll do like a 1,000pt army tops" (Madness has reached fever pitch)
*200+ guardsmen, 7 leman russes, a valkyrie, 5 chimeras, roughly 60 orks along with bikes, koptas, and a Battlewagon later, and now I'm rebuilding my entire IG army from the ground up with 3rd party bitz and converting an ork warbiker horde...
I think I need help...

I was considering this too but luckily all of my friends are content with 40k now. they were looking at EPIC 40k though which I could handle easier to transport and cheaper.
I caught the bug when I was 12. I played Flames of War V1 at this gaming store for older men with my father, and one day he took me to a game store down-town which had both 40k and FoW stuff.
I liked modeling tanks for WWII at 1/48 and 1/35 at that age, so I picked up a Leman Russ because it was a sci-fi battletank, basically.
Now, I have over 13,000 points sunk into an entire regiment of Imperial Armor, with two and a half companies of Leman Russ tanks, one company of superheavies, and one mechanized infantry company with all the required support elements.
I feel like it has enriched my life. It lets my creative side out, and as a philosophy major, developing my army's fluff and ideas with friends allows me to discuss topics that are normally rather taboo in American society, such as Stalinism, forced labor, ecological destruction, etc and still examine the positive attributes.
My regiment is the 1st Concordian Armored, and even though I have 13k of models, I have no intent on stopping until I fill out an entire TO&E for a full-size Guard regiment.

I never even heard of warhammer till I was going to E3 with a press pass and happened to stop by the THQ booth for an interview and saw Dawn of War. The art box would have never convinced me to try the game but the gameplay and my demo time at E3 convinced me to get into it. I swear I still break out the origional game some days just for the awesome sound track and voice overs.

Next stop, years almost later, I found out it actually belonged to a board game first after reading some of the black library books starting luckily with thier first omnibus (Let the Galaxy Burn - an excellent book btw for someone starting out reading all about 40k) Didn't get into the modeling side of things till sometime into the Ravenor series and got into the GK. ... got started with Assault on black reach then got some IG to use as hechmen and then decided to paint the AoBR orks... then started collecting orks... then more IG tanks... then storm ravens when those things finally came out, then since I'm playing GK, might as well get started on daemons... then might as well get started on finishing the SM's lol, and hey, while I'm at it, necrons are worth a look. Since we're experimenting with more GK allies, lets get some Tau. Now I got Tau, they work better with Eldar allies! Next up, sisters of battle whenever it is they get a models upgrade, I love the concept and origional love of inquisition so it's natural to go there too.
After looking back a bit, I'm now playing essentially every army except nids and DE.
GK - like 5k points? I have no idea anymore
IG - probably 3k points but some 4 baneblades are on the shelf hoping they get in standard games in the next codex upgrade
Necrons - probably 2.5k
Orks - 2k ish
Tau - can push 2k easily, probably 2.5k with some of the eldar thrown in
SM - since they are kind of generic marines that remain unpainted cept for 5 of them in ultramarine colors, I can run them basically as vanilla (need some drop pods)/BT (need more land speeders)/dark angel (need more terminators/bikes) /BA (I got storm ravens but lack of jump packs but plenty of mech builds) or space wolves (need the drop pods still, got some rune priests ish models ready to go) probably 1500
Daemons - probably 2.5k
Sisters - so far about 200 points only but lots of options to proxy wmahahaha.
Heck, can probably run the unpainted SM's as CSM too, just need a helldrake or two and some obliterators.
Building terrain now and I set up some nice diaoramas. Makes it so the wife can at least enjoy looking at the models eventhough she's not much of a player (but she likes rolling dice! Hence I built the ork army for her to mess with, green tide simple strats and literally a bucket of dice )

nice vid. and when playing green wave it is satisfying to lay down handfull after handfull of dice.
A little over 3 years ago my father in law bought WFB for my oldest son. We played a few games and decided that fantasy just wasn't something he liked. So, I bought him AoBR. That was my downfall.
Today we have a gaming table in the garage that always has a game going. Next to it is a shelving unit with 4 shelves sized 2'x4' each filled to capacity with various armies in tight formation. Beneath the table is enough terrain to fully cover 2 tables.
I bought an iPad simply because the space marine codex came out on it. My "disease" is bad.
Fortunately, my wife has compared my "little" hobby to those of her friend's husbands and is supportive. The money spent is far cheaper than getting a mid life crisis motorcycle. Also, I don't go to bars, nor do I spend every weekend on a couch yelling at the TV. But it's better than that because my kids are involved and we spend a lot of time together.
So, when my Christmas list only contains things from Forgeworld, that's what shows up. (Incidentally HH:Betrayal rocks).

40k has some good rpg games.
Deathwatch is basically be a marine and go kill stuff. That's all it is at it's core. You can roleplay well with it, deal with vehicles, large campaigns or just stealth missions, it's all there.
Dark heresy is another I would recommend, this should be played by a veteran group or a group that has played deathwatch already so they understand the system, as you're just a human, no power armor, no crazy toughnes, no baller weapons, at least for a while. You play as members of an inquisitors unit, and run around doing missions. Fun, works great with serious players that also want to blow things up.
Finally rogue trader, you're play as the guy who owns a ship, that you get to make, or as part of his main crew. You fly around, doing rogue trader things. This game can go AWAL fast if they party isn't on the same page, so be careful
Last, we have black crusade, which honestly is just bollocks. You can play a space marine or human, but every game descends into chaos, literally. Recommended for serious players only, you can have fun with this game, but it's basically saying the players can and will do whatever they want. There is no control.
