I think that's what you're talking about... of course that is only for chimera's. Otherwise I would go for plasticard. Probably one of the easiest things to make out of plasticard, but to be perfectly honest, I have next to no experience with the stuff...
Interested in what you find with this. Been looking for way's to customize my army and make it look... well, not Cadian, without making them look like a rag tag bunch of heretics
Edit: just found this too. So that's all you're forge world options (unless I'm bad): http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Imperial_Guard_Accessories/CHIMERA-TRACK-GUARDS.html

True but forge world isnt much of an option either, around $10 seems a bit much for top guards.

True dat. But you can use those as a reference for plasticard replica's.

Sorry for the self promotion but I do my own track guards as I'm not a fan of either GWs or FWs versions.
It's just a pretty simple plasticard insert but it looks decent and you don't have to pay silly FW prices!

I'm a bit confused, are you talking about side skirts or track guards? They're different.
I'm not a fan of side skirts myself, though I know of their use and benefit, but track guards I am interested in learning about. The link by Notprop is good, though I think of it more as a starting point than a complete job.

Top track guards specifically
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I rather not scratch build them because every time I scratch build something it seems off to me, just personal preference. I surprised with all these 3rd party designers no one offers such a popular guard vehicle accessory.

My personal favorite, and used on all my tanks, is the plastic strap used for keeping boxes and packages together. Its about 3/4 in. wide and is easily scored and cut by a sharp utility knife. It has a nice cris cross pattern that looks like steel plating when highlighted with metalic colors. I get it from work for free. I am not really sure where to get it otherwise, maybe at a shipping store.

Round the back of any decent sized warehouse/store would be my suggestion. Every bundle of newspaper or magazines sold comes wrapped in this stuff, infact allot of things do so just look about.
I like the textured idea but is it not too flexible for gaming use?

I imagine when glued to the tracks of the tank, the rigidity increases to the point that it's useable.
Interesting idea, I will have to try it out myself.

A slightly flexible guard would be all right, IMO.
If you look at photos of real historical tanks, the track guards are often bent due to collisions, fat crew and so on.

Indeed but if it is too bendy in the middle then the paint might not hold if it flexes in handling repeatedly showing through the plastic underneath.

I havent had any problems with the strapping. You can kinda re-roll it to flatten it out. Like I mentioned, a simple score across it allows it to do the angles it needs and then when you glue it down, I use super glue, it keeps the form. I'll see if my pics on here have the armor on them.

You can see the armor on this chimera.

Using that stuff also allows you to use only half of the treads. That way you have treads to use on your scratchbuilds!

You can probably iron plastic strapping to get rid of the texture.
However, thin plasticard -- 0.25mm or 0.5mm -- will be flat to start, less "bendy" and will take paint better, so perhaps that would be the best thing.
