How do you do your bases?
I like mine to be snowy because when you have an army that is predominantly brown (ie all my current armies save my WFB one - Mordor, Rangers of Arnor, Circle Orboros and home-brew CSM warband), the white is a nice contrast.

Depends on the army. Space wolves I do with snow. Grey Knights it's a mix of snow for character models and then a reddy brown for everything else. Blood Angels are brown with bleached bone drybush.

SW was easy for me, static grass with snow over it and some other tufts of grass sticking out. DE were very dificult to decide on however. I'm still trying to decide what I like for them.

Sand with a couple of bits of gravel, painted black, with a couple of shades of grey dry brushed onto it, then some pale static grass clumps. Quick, easy, and it doesn't distract from the models. I'm not a fan of bases which compete with the model for attention, or those massive things which end up bigger than the model.
I try to think of bases as a picture frame - the plainer the better

I like when an army has a distinct enough flavor that I can use an established, atmospheric "home field" for basing. My little Infinity forces are getting the stereotypical treatment - sand for Haqqislam and snow for Ariadna. When I eventually get around to my fantasy forces, I'm considering doing likewise: stone for dwarves, spring grass for (high) elves, patchy dead scrub on parched soil for undead, etc.
The more generic armies are the tricky ones, for me. I have absolutely no idea what I'll do for my Space Marines, for example, as I picked a relatively obscure chapter (based almost solely on their color scheme) and don't plan on building up my own fluff about their homeworld or current deployment. I'd need to make a purely aesthetic call and there are just so many potential options to choose from. My Orks were an easier decision, since my primary criterion was simplicity, knowing the sort of troop count I could expect by the time I built up a playable force. They get medium-grit sand, primed black with the rest of the model and drybrushed up with a medium and light gray. Quick, dirty, and wholly unimpressive, but not so crude as to detract from the overall effect.

I do snow covered rocks, like an icy desert. It's the new Goblin green dipped in flock.

My Imperial Fists have a sort of muddy brown which is what I think of when I think of trenches. My Iron Warriors have a dark grey kinda ashy/scorched earth feel. My Elysians are painted up similar to US Army desert 3 color so they have a sandy color with scorched, & arid static grass. Now my Mech IG will likely end up with a combined look from the IW & Elysian styles above because they're supposed to be on a planet with a surface of sulphur, ash, & strip mines.
I used to use actual play sand but lately I've been using coarse & fine pumice gels to great effect.

For Orks I use mostly Army Painter basing materials. Battleground (Brown), Battlefield Rocks, Highland+Winter Grass Tufts, and then paint the rim Mournfang Brown. With this method I don't have to do any extra painting on the base and it looks like badlands or a rocky desert.

I noticed a lot of people seem to be doing a lot of outdoor basing. I'm doing my sisters on a temple type basing. Very solid marble looking white with grey "vains", with some red ribbon to be used as the rug accents.

I think that's mostly due to the prevalence of predominantly outdoor game tables, at least for army-scale games like 40k or WFB. With the exception of armies that will sit on a display board, most folks base for the battlefield. Indoor basing seems a lot more common for skirmish-scale games played on smaller boards, where indoor settings aren't quite as rare. I've seen plenty of rusty floor grating Necromunda bases (an "in-between" sort of case, admittedly), smooth-paneled techno-floor Infinity bases (esp. for Aleph and Nomads), etc.
