Ah yes, living in Charlotte, and now Wilmington, NC, I can attest to how everything shuts down the minute that snow threatens. We had about eight inches of snow in Charlotte once; schools were closed for a week, as well as a lot of government buildings and agencies and private businesses.

When I did a couple years penance in South Carolina it was like that as well. Everything came to a screetching halt when the white stuff fell. That was some scary times. I swear your southern Drivers Ed classes teaches people to speed up when the roads grow icy.

Ah, but I love it. It rarely ever snows, so we don't have to deal with it on a regular basis, and when it does everything stops and we can go and enjoy it instead of going to work. The best part is that it all melts away within a few days. We get all the fun of snow, without any of the headaches. It's a good system.

Lost in a blizzard, somewhere near Toronto

We had 45-50 cm of snow in montreal last week, in one day. Not too much wind, not too cold, and yet about everybody called in sick for work. They called it an 'historical storm'.

I come from a small town north of Quebec City, and this happens yearly, much to our delight, as my family are all avid skiers.

I was thus left with the ingrate but nevertheless essential responsibility of making accusations of lack of manhood to just about everyone at work. Wusses.

Here in Burlington (about 45min drive west of the big TO), our one day record is about that too - 46cm in about 20 hours... On a Valentine's Day no less!

Unfortunately, Burlington's idea of 'snow clearence' is pretty much "it'll just melt in April, so why bother?!"
We got a little over 25cm all told between Boxing Day & the 27th, well, one of the main fething streets has finally had it's sidewalks dug out just yesterday!

I live on a main school buss route, but the city considers our street a 'tertiary street' for snowplows... Because, nothing says school safety like seeing a bus packed full of kids skidding up onto the curb and nearly tipping over apparently.

As for Toronto and them infamously calling in the Army to shovel the city... While it's still their national shame, it was actually a pretty solid move by the city admin since they'd never planned any kind of snow removal like you have in cities like Winterpeg, Calgary or Edmenton.

And that Januray in '99 it snowed for 2 weeks strait, so there was a craptonne of the stuff. My street when from two-and-a-half car-widths down to a single lane with the side mirrors of a school bus nicking the snowbanks at the ends of driveways!

And yet, despite a -43 degree windchill, our schools stayed open.

That must have been the one snowfall we had last year. Two years ago we got a bad freezing rain event, half an inch of ice in about 12 hours. It was horrible.

And I've got one of those wonderful jobs that require me to be here no matter what weather conditions.

I remember that, I sprained both of my knees walking to work, only to have the department head call 5 minutes after class started in order to notify me that the school had closed.

Even within the same state, there are some major differences with snow removal. The Philly region's snow removal is very spotty IMO. They do a good job where I live now, but I lived in another area in which major roads would go unplowed for hours and hours.

When I lived in Pittsburgh, one storm dumped 12" overnight and I arrived at work basically on time in the morning. *shrug*

Could be worse, at least half of Ottawa's roads are closed by construction crews at all times.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

And in Toronto, not only are half the roads closed by construction, but the Gardner Expressway is falling apart!

While daily concrete chuncks falling off has become routine, it's only a matter of time until a large section comes down and pancakes some poor innocents.

It wasn't that bad really, it was just annoying because I couldn't do any meaningful cardio or leg work for about a month. Stairs also became very annoying. However, it was a good excuse to take a week off of teaching, and buy a bunch of Scotch.
