It looks like your table may be hyper extending just a touch. Have you considered adding a flip out brace structure on the sides?

I also cannot tel if the hinges are countersunk or if one set (on each side) sticks up into the "play" surface area.

The hinges do protrude onto the table about 1/16" when it is in the larger configuration. I plan to build 2'x4' modular table top with various terrain settings on them. The modular pieces will have 1/8" rubber feet so they can sit above the hinge. I also plan to store the modular table tops under the table on a yet to be built shelving system.

I installed modular sides to solve the drooping problem and added a lighting system!
