I painted up a Vostoryan HQ using Dwarf bronze and they came out like this



When using the new GW colour for it (all the other base colours, washes etc are the same

it comes out like this



OK I know lighting is different etc but it seems the new GW paints don't cover quite as well as the old ones did. And in the case of the brass it's causing the Screaming Bell base colour to show through so much more. Extra layers seem to make little difference and I am worried that I might loose detail if I have to do too many coats.

Anyone else experienced this and if so how can I get around it?

The new GW layers aren't the same colour as their predecessors, so the result is going to be a little bit different. They're also much thinner than the old ones (or at least mine are), so you'll need more coats to cover properly. Or maybe you just have a bad batch.

Time to buck up and get the vallejo metal line. GW metallics are just garbage. I tried one bolter painted with the bolt gun and threw it in the garbage.

I have to shake up my GW pots to get them usable. Without doing that makes them super thin. Leadbealcher is the worst.

If OP does go Vallejo metallics (recommended over GW definitely), they have several lines - skip the VGC/VMC ones. The Vallejo Liquid Gold metallics are the best you'll get for brushwork and widely regarded as the best, if a bit harder to use due to requiring alcohol for thinning and brush cleaning. Vallejo Air metallics are also good for brush but are also airbrushable and very easy to work with.

I've had a problem with Vallejos gun bolt metal colour. Its waaaaaaaay to thin. Even if i shake it for 10 minutes before hand it makes no difference. I'm really hoping that its a problem with my bottle and not the whole line because im almost out of my old gw chainmail silver and will be needing more.

Honestly I think the second one looks better. Give it wash and be done with it. But yeah make sure you are really REALLY shaking the paint up. Metallics settle worse then norma paints.
