Sooo a couple of games of 6th edition have made it plain that i need to get on the flyer bandwagon. Getting shot up by a pair of vendettas has resulted in me doing what i swore i never would. I bought a couple of Storm Talons. Thus committed i set about trying to salvage this most abominable of kits... my attempts are below.

[Thumb - 1.jpg]
An early attempt, rough cuts everywhere. tried to fit the missiles in the nose (there are also missiles under the engine turbines) The roof is a mess from an early attempt to have roof mounted missiles.

[Thumb - 2.jpg]
As you can see i've also got rid of all the Assault cannon mount making for a much less bulky profile.

[Thumb - 3.jpg]
The bottom tail fin is history, the side pod mounts still need removing and theres a fair amount of work to do to the flank in general

[Thumb - 4.jpg]
ditched the missiles in the nose and went for the targeter,

[Thumb - 5.jpg]
got rid of the side pods which resulted in massive holes in the flank. Patched these with ammo hoppers and other various components.

[Thumb - 6.jpg]

[Thumb - 7.jpg]

[Thumb - 8.jpg]
as you can see, put the HB ammo hoppers over the assault cannons, sees to work quite nicely

[Thumb - 9.jpg]
once one was done the second was a doddle,

[Thumb - 10.jpg]

[Thumb - 11.jpg]
overall considering the time spent and the fact it only uses bits from the Storm Talon Kit im fairly chuffed with these...

You don't have any WIP do you as far as what you did to the sides and turret to get rid of the bulkiness? These look 300% better and I want to copy it.

Y'know i meant to do a load of WIP photos but er,.. got a bit carried away. Not had so much fun assembling something in AGES.

What ill do is grab the instructions and do a guide on what i cut and where, taking photos of the manual so you can see what i did.

Fingers crossed that'll help you out

I actually like the original model, but this is definitely one of the better conversions I've seen. I'm not totally sold on having the missiles in the nose, though. I think I'd be more keen to see a rack of three under each engine (or wing) just to spread the load out a bit. but that's just me really nice work on this.

The wings look longer or bigger though. I've got 3 of these things that I got for $15-20 each. At least one of them is missing the weapon pod that tack onto the front of cockpit, but it looks like you didn't even use them. I was also thinking about converting one into the new DA flyer after looking at your coversion. I'd have to get some longer wings oand extend the tail maybe. but That's cheaper than spending another $60-70 on the DA flyer.

Nope they are the original wings. they just look bigger because the rest of the model is more streamlined now. Ill look for that manual tomorrow so you can see what i did.

I put the assault cannons where you have the lascannons and left the side pod mounts intact. The pods are magnatized so I can swap weapons if I ever desire. It gives the Talon a more agressive look to it which I really like. I also don't have a problem with the top intake vents. They're far less an issue than they were on the Stormraven.

Now that I've seen your pictures, I do like the idea of removing the lower stabilizer from the tail and will probably do that to mine. As for the empty turrent, I'm still mulling over my options but will probably grab some sort of sensor array (like from a Predator) or something to jam in there.

Still, good job. I like what you've done.

IMO, the Nephilim/Dark Talon fighters of the newer DA release are far better looking and really do fit the aesthetics of the Space Marines, whilst simultaneously appearing to be at least aerodynamically capable. Pity it's just the DA who use them... :(

That said, this thread has kind of inspired me to do a bit kit-bashing between a Dark Talon and a Storm Talon - excellent work!

Why would you do that? Because the nephilim arleady looks like a combination between a Stormtalon and a Thunderbolt.

@sing your life - Because of a couple of reasons:

A) Nephilim fighters can only be used by the DA. I don't play the board-game, but I'd like my army (Salamanders) to be fairly consistent with the fluff ie. No Nephilim fighters. However, I can pass of a converted Storm-Talon as just an example of the Salamanders techno-forging prowess.

B) There's features of both the Storm Talon and the Nephilim that I like. For Example, whilst I prefer the airframe's greater length and sleekness of the Dark Talon and the larger wings, I prefer the engine and weapon mounts of the Storm Talon.

Really it's to each his own. I rather suspect that had GW released the Nephilim for all chapters I would have plumped for that, but the above conversion has convinced me that kit-bashing a Storm Talon is feasible.

I would just use the nephilim mini with all the DA iconagraphy replaced with Salimanders stuff.

EDIT: Oh and stylised as a dragon.

Yeah, but like I said, there's aesthetic aspects other than a simple icon change that I don't prefer, and the issue of fluff. I'll be happy with a kit-bash
